Carl Sandburg wrote countless words in an array of different genres, including poetry, children’s stories, journal articles, as well as a biography and autobiography! He wrote of love and nature, dreams and struggles. This year’s theme of “Memory” is echoed in much of his works. ““Under the summer roses, when the flagrant crimson, lurks in the dusk, Of the wild red leaves, Love, with little hands, comes and touches you with a thousand memories, and asks you beautiful, unanswerable questions.” Carl Sandburg
Poems submitted for the 2024 contest should reflect the theme of “Memory.” By definition, “the process or power of recallling something learned or experienced from the past” Note: Poems do NOT need to be titled Memory, as long as the poem itself relates to the theme.
Students are invited to submit a poem to Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site’s annual Student Poetry Contest. The contest encourages youth to explore writing their own poetry and is open to students nationwide!
- Submissions are accepted from grades 3-12 and must be submitted by email by Monday March 4, 2024. See below for submission rules.
- Winners will be notified by April 7, 2024, and will be invited to participate in a virtual celebration program on Sunday, April 28.

Embark on a scenic journey across George Vanderbilt’s Italy with a large-scale outdoor display that combines brilliant botanical designs with authentic messages written by Vanderbilt himself.
Beautifully handcrafted of natural elements, each sculptural postcard depicts a location or landmark Vanderbilt visited more than a century ago. This captivating complement to Biltmore’s Italian Renaissance Alive exhibition reveals Vanderbilt’s passions for travel, culture, architecture, and art as well as his personal experience of such renowned Italian cities as Milan, Florence, Venice, Pisa, and Vatican City.
Adding to the charm and visual appeal of Ciao! From Italy—sure to be a hit among kids of all ages—is the G-scale model train that travels in and out of each postcard in this enlightening display!
Located within the wildly-popular and botanically beautiful Southern Appalachian Mountains, The North Carolina Arboretum offers more than 10 miles of hiking trails that connect to many other area attractions such as Lake Powhatan, the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy their hiking experience at the Arboretum as trail options include easy, moderate, and difficult challenge levels. All trails are dog-friendly and visitors are asked to adhere to the proper waste disposing procedures for pets.

L. Frank Baum’s beloved story of a young girl’s adventure in a magical land has been entertaining audiences for over a century. MGM’s blockbuster 1939 film adaptation, featuring the timeless songs of Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, along with the brilliant instrumental music of Herbert Stothart, elevated the popular novel to even greater heights. This stage adaptation, featuring the characters and celebrated songs from the film, brings the wondrous Land of Oz to life.
Join Dorothy and her loyal companion, Toto, as they “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” through the Land of Oz, determined to reach the Emerald City, where the great and powerful Wizard of Oz will help them get home. Of course, along the way, Dorothy encounters witches (both good and bad), Munchkins, talking trees and winged monkeys. But most importantly, she befriends three unique characters: a Scarecrow with no brain, a Tin Man with no heart, and a Lion with no nerve. Their journey to happiness – and self-awareness – is a glowing testament to friendship, understanding and hope in a world filled with both beauty and ugliness.
Asheville Junior Theater is kicking this show up a notch with a bluegrass/Appalachian/Asheville adaptation of the original. It’s the classic story with a creative twist in a very familiar setting. Asheville, you are going to love this! Featuring local Bluegrass band, The Well Drinkers, who combine traditional roots of their Appalachian region with progressive instrumentation and songwriting, this show will knock your socks off!!

Practice reading with a furry pal at the library every Tuesday afternoon and improve your skills with the listening ear of a certified therapy dog from the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

Do you have a rising kindergartner and questions about what it means to be “ready for kindergarten”?
This drop-in event is intended to provide families with an opportunity to meet representatives from local schools and ask any questions pertaining to the registration process as well as specifics about each school. We encourage anyone with a rising kindergartener for the current academic year to attend and chat with friendly staff about your school options. Participants will have an opportunity to receive free resources and materials to support their children’s transition to kindergarten.
If you have a child who will be 4 by August 31, 2024, you may also attend to get information on eligibilty for Buncombe Pre-K options.

The Western North Carolina Scale Model Club is a non-profit group for static (non-RC) model builders to present their models and share tips and tricks in a laid back atmosphere. Bring your latest finished piece or your work in progress. All skill levels are welcome! Due to the fragile nature of these models this program is designed for ages 12 and up. |

About STOMP
STOMP is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, sexy, utterly unique and appeals to audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered an armful of awards and rave reviews and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured and the addition of two new full-scale routines, utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans. This presentation is designed for adults and assumes no prior knowledge of pollinators. You’ll learn about pollination and pollinators overall, as well as the most common pollinators in Western North Carolina. These topics are followed by a discussion of conservation concerns and simple steps you can take to help pollinators. The session wraps up with the fascinating concept of pollination syndromes and how you can use them to participate in pollinator conservation. This presentation is brought to you by the Bee City – Asheville (BCA) Leadership Committee and is given by Athena Rayne Anderson, Ph.D., M.Ed. Athena earned her doctoral degree in 2012 from the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia. Her work focused on pollination ecology, especially of native bees. She loves making science accessible to the public and is founder and Chair of the BCA Presentations Subcommittee. This group is dedicated to ensuring monthly pollinator presentations in the Asheville area. Athena is also a Certified Pollinator Steward through the Pollinator Partnership. |
