Solve a History Mystery with Lauren each Thursday at 2 PM! During these Facebook Live events, Lauren will feature a historic artifact and share clues about its purpose. Can you guess the artifact before Lauren reveals what it is? Tune in weekly to find out!

Join assistant site director, Lauren May, for this online history lesson as she gives us a glimpse into the life of Leah Erwin, a slave on the Vance Plantation.
Using artifacts, documents, and the historic landscape of the Vance Birthplace, Lauren will discuss Leah’s role as enslaved cook and housekeeper, her struggle to build a family during slavery, and her life after emancipation.
Tucked in the Reems Creek Valley, the Vance Birthplace State Historic Site interprets life on an early 1800s mountain plantation. Utilizing seven historic structures and an extensive artifact collection, interpreters at the site share the stories of the people who lived and worked on the land from 1795-1844.

Join best-selling author of the book, Amazing Glaze, Gabriel as he demystifies the techniques that will help you learn to love the glazing process, achieve more dynamic results, and get your work noticed. Topics will include under and overglaze decoration, glazing large and delicate work, spraying glazes, and multiple firings. We will also examine the basics of formulating, mixing, or altering a glaze.
Level: Seasoned Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced

In 1918 vs 2020, we take an in-depth look at the 1918 influenza epidemic in Western North Carolina through newspaper clippings, advertisements, ephemera, photographs, and oral history and place the events of 1918 into context with our present-day response to the coronavirus pandemic.

May is National Preservation Month and as usual we will be taking this time to celebrate some of the many preservation projects in Asheville and Buncombe County. Because we can’t meet in person this year, we will be posting videos of the winning projects throughout the month. We hope you will help us celebrate these wonderful projects and the people who made them happen all month long!

A video-based program that guides aspiring hide tanners through every step of tanning a deer hide.
Natalie Bogwalker
Natalie is a hide tanner, craftswoman, builder, teacher, mom, and gardener. She founded Wild Abundance 10 years ago because of her passion for sharing real, practical skills that get people closer to the Earth. Hide tanning was one of the first earthskills that she learned, and it changed her life profoundly. That was over 15 years ago! Since then she’s tanned uncountable hides, but more importantly, she’s taught hide tanning to hundreds of students.
Natalie knows what usually trips people up who are new to hide tanning. In this online course she shares a thorough, step-by-step guide to hide tanning, including numerous tips and tricks that will help you succeed.
