This beautiful exhibit celebrates the works of photographer Lauren Rutten and quilter Kari Morton. What these two artists share in common are a partnership in the five-woman, artist-owned Flow Gallery in historic downtown Marshall, and a deep love of Madison County, their newly chosen home.

In 2015, Lauren and her husband Andy, traveled the US for one year searching for a home. “From the very moment I arrived in Marshall while on this journey, I had a sense of having dreamt of this place since childhood – I knew this was where I wanted to be.

I have found that my life here is not confined within four walls, so I’m very interested in reflections, when the light shines through a structure, or a barn begins to dilapidate so the outside and inside merge.

Marshall finds itself in a season of change. Many families who are moving here to homestead live alongside families who have farmed here for generations. This collection hopes to show the range of those who have come to call Marshall home, as well as the hard reality of homesteading and its immense beauty, which are in direct relationship with each other here. In this land I dig my hands in the earth and muddy my feet on the ground, while at the same time experiencing the transcendence of being and connecting to so much beyond my body. I hope those who view these photos might experience this too.”

Kari and her husband, Mike, moved to Madison County in 2012, after having lived a fairly nomadic life. They decided Madison County was the place to put down roots and call home.

“This collection is inspired by my immediate world, the things I live with and the things I see – the garden in my front yard, the chickens in the back yard, the buildings in downtown Marshall, where I spend many hours working at Flow and serving as a guardian ad litem in the county courthouse. Each of my pieces tell a story of connection, to my community, to my world. I love sharing this part of myself with others.”

Flow Gallery is located on Main Street in the historic, picturesque town of Marshall, which lies along the French Broad River, just 25 minutes north of Asheville, NC. The gallery is in its 8th year of business and showcases the work of over 65 talented, regional artists.

An all-day festival celebrating regional music and dance traditions. The event is the second oldest folk festival in Western North Carolina and was named in honor of co-founder Bascom Lamar Lunsford, a musician and folklorist who dedicated his life to collecting and promoting the music of the Southern Appalachians. Through his work he became known as the “Minstrel of the Appalachians.” The festival, which is now in its 51st year, brings out the region’s finest musicians and dancers. Numerous performances, open jams, workshops, a ballad swap, and a community dance will occur throughout the day and early evening. Join us in honoring the rich cultural traditions of the Southern Appalachians!

It’s over a century old. It’s a cornucopia of sights and sounds—a treat for all your senses. It’s a carnival and an agriculture show. It’s an art show and a game show. There’s food, music, and rides. It’s pure, unfiltered fair entertainment with that unmistakable Cherokee touch: a Ferris wheel, fireworks, and stickball.

Stickball has long been known as the “Little Brother of War,” and you’ll find thrilling demonstrations of it mixed into all the traditional fair fun and food. In fact, you’re going to find ample amounts of all sorts of authentic Cherokee culture, including archery and blowgun demonstrations, local art, dance, music, and more.

General admission is $10 per person at the gate. Children ages 6 and under will be admitted for free. Enrolled members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and other federally recognized tribes will receive free admission.

Farm City Day, started in 1955, is a free event scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2018. Farm City Day is located at Jackson Park, Hendersonville, NC, and begins at 10:00 am continuing until 4:00 pm.

Approximately 50 acres of Jackson Park will be used for urban, rural, and educational displays, antique and modern farm equipment, and crafters from many generations. Farm City Day celebrates our rural traditions and introduces the urban population to agriculture our most important industry.

A special youth area will feature many hands-on activities including petting farm animals, old-timey demonstrations, and a fishing pond. Enjoy many children’s games and stay for a wagon ride though the park.

Planned entertainment includes the ‘Local Artist Showcase Stage’ with three local bands performing throughout the day. Food and displays cover two fields by local non-profit organizations. There is no admission charged to enter. Farm City Day is brought to you by Henderson County Cooperative Extension and Parks and Rec.

Appropriate for those who are incorporating agriculture, renewable energy, green building, land planning, hand-made products, and land-based living of all kinds. Includes a panel of local homesteaders and a regional expert on soil, climate, rainfall, typography, vegetation, wind, and how that affects and determines life, farming, and building in our region.

Taught by Lee Warren & Brandon Greenstein.

Lee Warren is the Executive Director of Organic Growers School; the co-founder, designer, and builder, of an off-grid, sustainably-built CoHousing Neighborhood at Earthaven Ecovillage; founder and manager of Imani Farm, 5-acre pasture-based cooperative farm; and managing partner of SOIL, School of Integrated Living, which teaches organic food production, regenerative systems, and community living. Lee is also an herbalist, writer, teacher, and food activist, with an avid interest in rural wisdom, sustainable economics, and empowered self-reliance.

Brandon is the Home-Grower Program Director for OGS, developing new initiatives to provide services to home-growers. His background is in Renewable Systems, Earth Works, Energy, Water, Homesteading, Permaculture. He offers consulting, design, and technical services for the creation of low impact and energy conserving systems through his company, Integrated Ecological Solutions.

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

What: Family Discovery Day is an opportunity to come explore the Farmstead with family for FREE.

At each event we will provide a craft, forest exploration prompt, an engagement activity to further explore the theme of the month, educational boards on the theme to promote lifelong learning, and an item we will be raffling off. This is all in addition to opening our 25 acre school grounds for families to explore!

This watercolor workshop will focus on introductory concepts including washes, glazing, masking, and general approaches to the art of mixing color. We will discuss bringing a beginner’s mind to your art, as well as ways to “go with the flow” and enjoy the meditative qualities of watercolor.

Each student will create several studies and two finished watercolor paintings, one of a mountain landscape, and another of an autumn leaf. All materials will be provided!

Paul and Sarah met while working as Chefs at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. When the time came to purchase a home and start a family, they immediately settled on Hendersonville. Five years later and with the addition of their one year old son Hayden, Paul and Sarah are excited to take their commitment to this community to a new level.

This one-of-a-kind studio with the “Spoon Lady,” Abby Roach, and one-man-band Chris Rodrigues will make you feel like you’re inside NC’s lively busking scene. Abby first got into street performance as a way to make money for her travels across the United States by hopping freight trains. She taught herself to play the spoons, eventually becoming an internationally-known street performer, folk percussionist, storyteller, radio personality and free speech activist. Chris, a multi-instrumentalist, has carved out his own unique blues, Appalachian style, playing the resophonic guitar, blowing the harmonica, and singing his takes on traditional songs. Together, they’ll showcase the complex rhythms of modern hobo culture and the music that surrounds it with their stories of busking, riding freight trains, and more.
