Reclaimed Creations
Nov 12 @ 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
NC Arboretum

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.

About the Artist

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

Peanut Butter & Jelly GAL Campaign
Nov 12 @ 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
Guardian ad Litem

North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Programs Join Together to Contribute to Food Banks

The North Carolina GAL program is currently collecting jars of peanut butter and jelly to donate to food pantries across the state. Our Buncombe County donations will go directly to Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry and Owen Middle School. We are joining others in North Carolina in a project that honors service to others. We launch our PB&J campaign NOW, and we end on Sunday, January 20, 2019, the National Day of Service (the day before MLK Jr. Day).

This is our 3rd annual statewide service project undertaken by the staff, volunteers, friends and supporters of GAL. This is the 1st year that Buncombe County is participating; we’ll see how many donations we receive, and we hope this helps to further share our name with the greater community, bringing Guardian ad Litem more into the public eye. For 35 years, GALs have represented the best interest of children in court. Much of the work we do is confidential in nature and therefore, our work is largely unknown outside of juvenile court. This project is a way for us to engage our communities in provisioning their Food Banks while at the same time highlighting who we are and what we do.

Encourage your friends, family, local businesses, places of worship, schools and neighborhoods to get involved and participate. We have flyers for the campaign in our office if you’d be willing to post them in your local “hot spots!” Please use the attached logo and spread the word to all of your acquaintances. Post this logo/info. on social media. Feel free to share this in upcoming GALA newsletters through January.

We are pleased to offer our donations to SVCM and Owen Middle in January!

Please drop off all PB&J donations at the GAL office:
31 College Place, 204D
Asheville, NC 28801
We are here Mondays-Fridays and closed for lunch from 12:30-1pm.

If you have a large donation, you can call Dianna Ryel-Lindsey, GAL Program Specialist, to coordinate a pick-up:
#828-259-6603

Also, please contact our office if you are interested in making this project a success, have ideas, any brainstorming around this campaign- we are open to your creativity!
THANK YOU, dear GALs, we appreciate all that you do!
Happy holidays!

In Times of Seismic Sorrows
Nov 12 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Center for Craft

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition At The Haen Gallery
Nov 12 @ 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The Haen Gallery

The Haen Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, is proud to present their 12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition. The exhibit will run through November.

Lynn Boggess is one of the most unique and noteworthy American landscape painters of the 21st Century. He resides in West Virginia, a state whose diverse mountains, forests, and rivers provide abundant inspiration for the artist’s plein air paintings. In place of brushes he uses palette knives and trowels to thickly layer the broad sweeping strokes and exquisite fine detail that capture all the colors of the seasons in rushing rivers, snow covered hillsides, and thick forest vegetation. Mr. Boggess’ work is recognized internationally for its incredible three-dimensional texture, rendered solely in oils. These remarkable paintings combine elements of Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism to create a style that is totally unique and original.

The Haen Gallery in Asheville is located at 52 Biltmore Avenue between City Bakery and Chestnut. There is a parking garage at the Aloft hotel across the street, another garage just up the hill, as well as street parking.

The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 12-5pm. For more information: 828-254-8577 or www.thehaengallery.com. Gallery contacts: Chris Foley, Director; Leslie Logemann, Gallery Manager.

With locations in Asheville and Brevard, The Haen Gallery offers the work of established artists whose distinctive and unique style sets it apart from ordinary and imitative efforts. Visit the website at thehaengallery.com.

A Triad of Beers Release
Nov 12 @ 12:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Wedge at Foundation

What better way to start your week than with a triple beer release? That’s right…Our Brewer, Ian, has been brewing up a storm so we’ve got three new beers releasing Monday, November 12th.

Because a pumpkin beer isn’t our kind of a fall beer, we’ll be releasing our fall concoction, a Carrot Cake Ale. This is a SUPER LIMITED experimental brew. We’ve only got two kegs of this carrot, pineapple, vanilla, lactose, spices, and autumnal inspiration. Trust me, you’ll want more than one. 5.6% ABV.

Next, up we’ve Irony Ale IPA. This “No Coast” style IPA takes the old school approach of making an IPA actually bitter. Hopped with Columbus, NZ Cascade, and Amarillo. You hopheads will thank us for this one. 6.3% ABV.

To round out the trio, we’re bringing back 13 Paces Baltic Porter! You remember it from last year, but in case it’s new to you, it’s a rummy, plummy winter lager jammed in flavor, warms your insides, and soothes the soul. 8.5% ABV.

These beers are at Foundation only, so swing in and grab a pint on Monday!

Anne Fitten Glenn presents Western North Carolina Beer
Nov 12 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

Over the past two hundred years, Western North Carolina has evolved from a mountainous frontier known for illicit moonshine production into a renowned destination for craft beer. Follow its story from the wild days of saloons and the first breweries of the 1870s through one of the longest Prohibitions in the nation. Eventually, a few bold entrepreneurs started the first modern breweries in Asheville, and formerly dry towns and counties throughout the region started to embrace the industry. The business of beer attracts jobs, tourists and dollars, as well as mixed emotions, legal conundrums and entrepreneurial challenges. Join award-winning beer writer Anne Fitten Glenn as she narrates the storied history of brewing in Western North Carolina.

nne Fitten Glenn has been writing about and working in the beer business on and off since the 1990s. She pens a regular “Mountain Brews” article for Edible Asheville and has written for numerous other publications and outlets, including All About Beer, Smoky Mountain Living, the Asheville Citizen-Times, Mountain Xpress and CraftBeer.com. She served on the Asheville Brewers Alliance Board of Directors for almost five years and was a founding organizer of Asheville Beer Week. The History Press published her first beer book, Asheville Beer: An Intoxicating History of Mountain Brewing, in 2012.

We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here.
Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you. Make sure you write your preferences in the comments if you purchase online.
