Vance Elementary School and Ben & Jerry’s Art Showcase
Jun 26 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Ben & Jerry' s Scoop Shop

There’s more than Chunky Monkey and New York Super Fudge Chunk in downtown Asheville’s Ben & Jerry’s this summer.

Art created by Vance Elementary School fifth grade students of art educator Robbie Lipe is now on display on the brick walls opposite the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The exhibit depicts the students’ interpretation of the artist Kehinde Wiley and the contemporary portraits he creates inspired by traditional Baroque paintings. It will be featured through the end of the summer.

“Ben & Jerry’s is excited about showcasing art from the community inside our scoop shop,” said general manager Chris Carter. “Making use of our walls to show what local artists are creating complements our social mission — to be actively involved in the places we live and do business. I hope this is the first of many art exhibits on our walls.”

Carter gave all the credit for the exhibit to Ms. Lipe, who teaches kindergarten through 5th-grade students at Vance Elementary. She was named the North Carolina Arts Educators Association “Art Educator of the Year” in 2017-2018.

Ben & Jerry’s is located at 19 Haywood Street. Current hours are Monday-Thursday 12 pm to 10 pm; Friday 12 pm – 11 pm; Saturday 11:30 am – 11 pm; Sunday 11:30 am – 10 pm.

For more information, call Carter at 310-601-6247.

FREE PATIO SHOW :: Carrie Morrison at The Grey Eagle

More info >> www.thegreyeagle.com/event/1865623/

Carrie is a singer/songwriter/pianist whose style has a big range – Celtic, blues, folk, rock, and a whole bunch of other styles she couldn’t possibly categorize (as she has no idea what they are). She writes strong melodies and wise lyrics. Her ballads break your heart in the best way, and her blues-y wit makes creates a wry smile. Carrie, an exceptional children’s teacher in Transylvania County, has lived in WNC for 15 years, and has been a working musician most of that time. She released her first full-length album, Miles and Miles, in fall 2017. The project was produced by Chris Rosser of Free Planet Radio. Her EP, Carolina Blonde, produced by the late Terry Wetton, was released in 2014. She performs regularly in WNC venues, and collaborates with many regional musicians onstage and in the studio. An avid hiker when not gigging, Carrie loves the mountains and the artistic community here. She is grateful to share her music and connect with her audiences.

Hollering: Farm Calls from Rural North Carolina
Jun 26 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Likely one of the oldest forms of human communication, versions of hollering are found in cultures around the world. From Scandinavia to Nigeria, people have used hollers to communicate across long distances, herd animals, and express their emotions. In the United States, rural, agricultural communities made use of hollers for hundreds of years. In this presentation Ms. Lynch-Thomason will discuss hollering traditions from the North Carolina Piedmont as well as the Deep South. She’ll holler some samples of cow-calling, calling for water, distress calls, and a variety of expressive hollers- and get the audience involved as well!

* * *

Saro Lynch-Thomason grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. She is a ballad singer, artist, musician, songwriter, a folklorist, an illustrator and labor activist. She received her graduate degree in Appalachian studies from Eastern Tennessee State University and now lives in Asheville, NC. She is the assistant director at the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center in Black Mountain.

Woody Wood Wednesday
Jun 26 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Highland Brewing Company

Aaron Wood is quite the renaissance music man. He grew up steeped in the traditions of blues and folk music of North Carolina. His father has shared the stage with the likes of Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley and performed at The Grand Ole Opry, taking Aaron with him every chance he got. It didn’t take long before the music took hold, and he studied any kind of music he could get his fingers on.

One look at the long list of artists he has shared the stage with exemplifies his diversity and respect from his musical peers. From Jimmy Martin to Leon Russel, R.L. Burnside to Warren Haynes, Sara Evans to Carlos Santana, Aaron has played with and learned from some of those who have helped shaped music into what it is today.

Each Wednesday features a different performer joining Woody on stage.

*June will be Woody’s last month playing Wednesday nights at Highland.
