Kerrville New Folk winner John John Brown is bringing giant comics and iconic photographs to the stage. Titled Songs, Stories, & Art- Lessons from Strangers, this original project weaves together storytelling songs and the visual arts in a live performance. Throughout the concert, Brown takes the listener inside the lives of 14 unique characters, while strumming his guitar and singing beside a projected graphic story. Unfolding is an imaginative and colorful world revealing the idea that all people, strangers alike, have a story we can learn from.

The Grateful Brothers pay tribute to two of the richest catalogs of music in American history: The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band.
Formed in early 2016, The Grateful Brothers combine the catalogs of The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead. Often intertwining songs through segues and transitions, they carry out the improvisational spirit of the two groups in their own space. They use the songs as more of a template rather than adhering to strict album-style covers, creating a unique, high-energy, and genuine crowd experience at every performance. The seven musicians making up the band have known each other and played in various outfits with one another for upwards of twenty years. The camaraderie between them is obvious and the familiarity leads to the ease of musical exploration.

IN FULL SWING!LEAF Schools & Streets invites your students to join us at LEAF Global Arts for summer camp. We are offering multiple camps which will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at LEAF Global Arts at 19 Eagle Street in Downtown Asheville.
Scholarships are available! Qualifications include:
- Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch
- Two of more siblings attending the same week of camp
- Students registering for 4+ LEAF Summer Camps in 2023 (must pay in full)

This summer, students will dive into music, art, theatre, and dance from around the world and in our community. Camp themes include celebrating diversity, songs for peace, black history, hip-hop culture, West African drumming, and more. Each camp will culminate in a Friday performance for friends and families, in addition to original recordings made in our ONEmic studio! LEAF’s ONEmic studio is funded by the Bed Gradison Memorial Fund and generous support of LEAF members
Ooh La La Curiosity Market is an artist’s market that takes place in Pritchard Park, located in the center of beautiful downtown Asheville and will showcase the work of more than a dozen local artists. Taking place on Saturdays throughout Summer and every Saturday in October. Ooh La La will feature works by local painters, leather smiths, jewelry makers, potters, up-cycled crafters, and other curious delights, all beneath the colored canopies of large market umbrellas. In addition to the artists, the market will also feature live local music with three musical acts performing each Saturday and will include everything from a solo saxophonist to folk, blues, acoustic and jazz acts.

THE SCATTERLINGS
The Scatterlings are a three-piece acoustic/Americana band based in Asheville, North Carolina. The members share a fondness for songs about heartbreak, whiskey, and killings, although they promise they are actually all very peaceful people. Many of their original songs offer masterful personal storytelling, while others are steeped deep in local history.

is a lively and extremely danceable world percussion ensemble based in Asheville, NC, that has been playing around the Southeast for over a decade. Their music is played on an array of large wooden African-style marimbas, accompanied by hand percussion and drum kit. Chikomo Marimba is known for their high-energy, tight arrangements, and infectiously joyful grooves. They are sure to get people of all ages up and shaking their bodies!
The 57th season of Shindig on the Green, a free event in the heart of downtown Asheville with a stage show and informal jam sessions, takes place on Saturday evenings July 1 through August 26, 2023.
Locals and visitors alike come together at downtown’s Pack Square Park “along about sundown,” or at 7:00 pm for those who wear a watch, and continues until 10:00 pm. Concessions are available! The remaining Shindig on the Green events will be held on July 1, 8, 15, 22 and August 12, 19, 26, 2023.
The stage show takes place on the Bascom Lamar Lunsford stage, named for the founder of the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival. Since the outdoor event’s inception in 1967, hundreds of thousands of individuals from across the region and throughout the world have shared and enjoyed the rich traditional music and dance heritage of the Southern Appalachian Mountains in this outdoor setting.
Shindig on the Green remains a free event due in part to net proceeds from ticket sales to the nation’s longest continually running festival, the granddaddy of all festivals, the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival.

Steep Canyon Rangers will be performing LIVE on the Outdoor Stage at Salvage Station on Saturday, July 1st , 2023 with Jon Stickley Trio opening the show! Doors open at 6PM and the music starts at 7PM. This is a General Admission, All-ages (kids under 7 are free; all others must have a ticket).
Root Down will be serving their delicious twist on Southern Soul food, along with a couple of other amazing local food trucks on-site (and, of course, we’ll have several full bars open for you to enjoy)!
Yue Bao, the Houston Symphony’s electric young Assistant Conductor, makes her Brevard debut with Rachmaninoff’s driving and rhythmic Symphonic Dances. Bao has conducted orchestras from Chicago to Shanghai, and shares her international perspective with the Brevard Sinfonia.

May 1st of this year saw the passing of one of Canada’s greatest musical exports and one of the finest singer-songwriters of all time, Gordon Lightfoot.
On July 1st, White Horse Black Mountain and Indie Award-winning guitarist Robin Bullock pay tribute to Lightfoot and his incomparable body of work with a one-night-only tribute concert. Bullock, a forty-year-plus Lightfoot fan, brings back to life all the classic hits and many exquisite deep-catalog finds for a re-creation of an evening with the bard himself. Written to celebrate the Boston Symphony’s 50th anniversary, Howard Hanson’s “Romantic” Symphony No. 2 is among the most recorded of all American symphonies. Popular since its premiere in 1930, Hanson’s themes can be heard in the credits for the blockbuster film Alien, and as a model for John Williams’s score to E.T. George Gershwin’s Second Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra receives a rare performance on this all-American program.

TOMMY PRINE
Tommy Prine’s debut album “This Far South” coming June 23, 2023 is not only a long awaited introduction but a testimony to Prine’s 20’s and the loss, love, and growth that has defined them. Co-produced by close friend and kindred musical spirit, Ruston Kelly, and beloved Nashville engineer and producer, Gena Johnson, the album is rich and dynamic from cathartic jams to nostalgic storytelling.
The son of late songwriting legend, John Prine, Tommy Prine grew up in Nashville surrounded by music, art and writing. As a child, he thought all parents were musicians, as his father “going to work” meant performing shows for adoring fans and writing songs. Tommy learned to play guitar by watching his father play, copying the ways his fingers moved and inadvertently developing his own singular style. Summers in Ireland lent their own inspiration, as did 10 straight years camping at Bonnaroo. Prine’s musical tastes grew to become decidedly eclectic, spanning John Mayer, Outkast, Bon Iver, the Strokes and more.
It wasn’t until Prine reached his mid-twenties, though, that he considered a career of his own in music and began to share with others the songs he wrote in private. His songs were quickly met with excitement and enthusiasm, which sonically brings together a colorful patchwork of musical influences and lyrically explores existential questions and emotional experiences.
Jordan Smart is a singer-songwriter currently based in Ludlow, KY. His songs echo between the prominent fingerpicking patterns of John Fahey and the Dylanesque vocal style of The Tallest Man on Earth. He flows with the current of the folk revival movement, which continues to course through the mainstream and underground channels today. But below the superficial labels lay the heart of the matter that distinguishes Smart from the bulk of other aspiring folk musicians.
Smart, 31, is a father. He grew up with humble beginnings, hitchhiked across the United States and slept under bridges. His life flashed before his eyes on a few occasions, but lives to tell the tale by the grace of good luck. Smart even found himself as a musical guest for Bernie Sanders during his presidential race in 2016. Through it all, Smart offers a remarkable level of sincerity and clarity that is few and far between.

“Not The Smile as in ha-ha-ha, more The Smile as in the guy who lies to you everyday”… so speaks Thom Yorke on the inspiration behind the name of the new trio consisting of himself, his Radiohead bandmate Jonny Greenwood and drummer Tom Skinner of UK jazz outfit Sons of Kemet. The description is borne out by The Smile’s acerbic first single “You Will Never Work In Television Again,” a 2:48 blast of ragged, raw energy that moved The New York Times to rave: “Over a bruising 5/4 beat and flailing guitars climbing through three chords, Yorke snarl-sings his avenging fury at some gangster troll promising the moon who’d devour all those beautiful young hopes and dreams, and you can almost feel the spittle flying.” “You Will Never Work In Television Again” was one of eight songs played by The Smile during the band’s debut performance as part of the 2021 global streaming Glastonbury event Live At Worthy Farm. Following the release of second track “The Smoke,” The Smile played three back to back live shows across 16 hours and three timezones at Magazine London. Performed in the round to an in-person audience and simultaneously livestreamed worldwide, the hybrid shows featured multiple songs that comprise The Smile’s first album, A Light For Attracting Attention, released digitally May 13th via XL Recordings.
Produced by Nigel Godrich and featuring additional critically acclaimed singles “Skrting On The Surface, “Pana-vision”, “Free In The Knowledge” and “Thin Thing”, A Light For Attracting Attention features strings by the London Contemporary Orchestra and a full brass section of contemporary UK jazz players including Byron Wallen, Theon and Nathaniel Cross, Chelsea Carmichael, Robert Stillman and Jason Yarde. The Smile began their 2022 European tour on May 16th in Croatia with UK dates in London, Edinburgh, and Manchester, before heading back into Europe, finishing their headline shows in Taormina, Sicily, on July 20th and with a final UK date in London’s All Points
East on 28th August.
Chris Rosser is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, composer and producer. In the world fusion trio Free Planet Radio, he plays the Indian dotar, Turkish cumbus oud, melodica, piano and guitar on their five album releases. As a solo performer, he has also released five recordings and tours nationally playing at festivals, clubs and listening rooms. He also has toured internationally as the keyboardist with master Turkish musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek, as the pianist/guitarist in Grammy-winning flute virtuoso Rhonda Larson’s ensemble, Ventus, and as a guitarist with acclaimed jazz/gospel singer Lizz Wright. In 2014 with Ventus and in 2016 with Free Planet Radio, he performed over 60 concerts in the top concert halls of the People’s Republic of China.
Eric Eden has recorded two albums: Grooving Up Slowly, A & M Records and Ivyland, Independent Release. Eric is busy working on his next record as well as writing for other artists with his songwriting partner Mark Mazzetti.
Eric’s first record Grooving Up Slowly was produced by Grammy Award winning Producer/Engineer. Hugh Padgham best known for his work with The Police and Sting.
And in what is surely a milestone in Eden’s career, his musical heroes assembled as his ‘in studio band’ to record IVYLAND. Collectively, these musicians have not played together since David Bowie’s “Young Americans” album…until now. IVYLAND has reunited Drummer Andy Newmark (John Lennon’s “Double Fantasy”, Sly and the Family Stone and George Harrison), Bassist Willie Weeks (George Harrison, Donnie Hathaway and Eric Clapton), and Guitarist Carlos Alomar (David Bowie’s favorite guitarist and musical director). Mike Brunner (Eric’s longtime guitarist and LA session musician) completes the musical equation

Produced by Nigel Godrich and featuring additional critically acclaimed singles “Skrting On The Surface,” “Pana-vision,” “Free In The Knowledge” and “Thin Thing,” A Light For Attracting Attention features strings by the London Contemporary Orchestra and a full brass section of contemporary UK jazz players including Byron Wallen, Theon and Nathaniel Cross, Chelsea Carmichael, Robert Stillman and Jason Yarde. The Smile began their 2022 European tour on May 16th in Croatia with UK dates in London, Edinburgh, and Manchester, before heading back into Europe, finishing their headline shows in Taormina, Sicily, on July 20th and with a final UK date in London’s All Points East on 28th August.
LEAF SUMMER CAMPS
IN FULL SWING!LEAF Schools & Streets invites your students to join us at LEAF Global Arts for summer camp. We are offering multiple camps which will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at LEAF Global Arts at 19 Eagle Street in Downtown Asheville.
Scholarships are available! Qualifications include:
- Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch
- Two of more siblings attending the same week of camp
- Students registering for 4+ LEAF Summer Camps in 2023 (must pay in full)

Snacks will be provided, and students should bring a peanut free bagged lunch and a water bottle to camp each day, and wear clothes and shoes they can move in.
In addition to the main focus of the camp, each week will explore elements of theater art, music, and dance from around the world.
Cost: $230 per week. Extended Day: $60 per week.

Day camp is one of the joys of summer — a chance to learn new skills while making new friends in a fun and supportive atmosphere. LEAF Global Arts Summer Camp registration is live on our website. The week-long camps take place Monday-Friday, June 12-Aug. 25.
This summer, students will dive into music, art, theatre, and dance from around the world and in our community. Camp themes include celebrating diversity, songs for peace, black history, hip-hop culture, West African drumming, and more. Each camp will culminate in a Friday performance for friends and families, in addition to original recordings made in our ONEmic studio!
