Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe presents Mike Gunter, Jr. author of “Tales of EcoTourist,” which combines humor and memorable anecdotes from five famous ecotourist destinations that offer a breathtaking backdrop to better understanding climate change. Held at The Collider, doors open at 5:30pm, and the book talk will begin at 6:00pm, following by a short Q&A. Free & open to the public.
Crossing the far corners of the globe, Tales of an Ecotourist showcases travel, from the hot and humid Amazon jungle to the frozen but dry Antarctic, as a simple yet spellbinding lens to better understand the complex issue of climate change. At its core, climate change is an issue few truly understand, in large part due to its dizzying array of scientific, economic, cultural, social, and political variables.
Mike Gunter Jr. is a Cornell Distinguished Faculty member and Arthur Vining Davis Fellow at Rollins College where he serves as Professor and Chair of the Political Science department and Director of International Affairs in the Holt School. He is the author of Building the Next Ark: How NGOs Work to Protect Biodiversity.
arth Skin is based upon the forms and textures of the earth using inspiration from aerial photography of Western North Carolina and topographical maps of local areas, including Pisgah National Forest and Balsam Range. Created by ceramic artists Trish Salmon and Crystal Allen, Earth Skin includes wall structures and pieces designed for mantles, shelves and tables. All works are available for purchase and a portion of the sales will be donated to The North Carolina Arboretum Society.
About the Artists
Trish Salmon
Trish has been studying clay for many years through the various classes available to her when she lived in the Atlanta area. Taking classes at Penland was a life changing experience and a turning point in her desire to become a studio ceramicist. She and her husband moved to Western North Carolina in 2007, and she has pursued her claywork full time after her career as a kitchen designer. Immediately after retirement, she enrolled in Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts Program in clay where she received her Associate’s Degree in 2014. She currently is a member of the Odyssey Coop Gallery in the River Arts District in Asheville, NC. She is also a founding member of Artisans on Main in downtown Weaverville where her studio is and where her work is primarily displayed.
Crystal Allen
Before discovering ceramics, Crystal earned a degree in Graphic Art and Design. She has also taught calligraphy, dabbled in watercolors and and learned how to felt, dye and spin natural fibers from her own llamas and sheep. Most recently, Crystal completed the Professional Crafts: Clay Associates degree at Haywood Community College. Her pottery is primarily functional, with altered or hand built additions. Her pieces are produced in her studio, one of her favorite places on earth!
Gangsters and gamblers, missionaries and showgirls are in town and on the Main Stage at Hendersonville Community Theatre, May 18th through June 3rd. Yes, it’s Guys and Dolls – Broadway’s perfect musical comedy about gambling men and the women who long to tame them! Tickets are $15-$26 and are available online at HendersonvilleTheatre.org or by calling the Box Office at (828) 692-1082.
Set against the backdrop of 1940s New York City, Guys and Dolls features one of the greatest musical scores in the history of American theatre, with hits that include: “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” “Take Back Your Mink” and “Luck, Be a Lady.”

Bring a little joy to your day and make your very own mini-macramé plant hanger to hang in your house or office! This workshop will teach you the basic techniques used in macramé, a type of fiber art in which rope is knotted in decorative patterns for functional uses, using a locally made and organic cotton lanyard yarn from Echoview Fiber Mill.
Craft kits include all the materials you’ll need: a planter, a succulent, and a washer for easy hanging. Learning these basic macramé knots will allow you to scale up your project in the future using rope to create plant hangers for your home or to give as gifts!
Craft kits are just $12 each and include all the materials needed to complete one craft AND a voucher for a fully loaded hotdog (or tempe-dog) from Foothills Local Meats hotdog cart. No pre-registration required. $5 admission (12 & up) without the purchase of a craft kit (includes one hotdog voucher). Free admission for children under 12. Collaborative community projects will be on-site, free and suitable for all ages!

The Flat Rock Playhouse is ready to celebrate summer by transporting the beach to the mountains with upcoming Music on the Rock Concert, Carolina Shag!
Celebrating the musical phenomenon that developed in the early 50’s on the Carolina Coasts, Carolina Shag will feature upbeat beach music from artists such as The Embers, The Tams, Chairmen of the Board, The Drifters.

Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) cordially invites all community members to a baby and children’s fair on Sat. June 2 from 10 am – 1 pm at Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center located at 75 Leroy George Drive, Clyde (adjacent to hospital).
This event will encompass numerous HRMC vendors as well as community vendors offering services. Examples include: Waynesville Wellness Center will be offering a free ultrasound of your baby’s heartbeat (no image), Haywood Community College will be providing Child and Baby CPR education and training, and Haywood Co. Library will be present to market their reading programs for children which include service dogs that children can read with. Enjoy pregnancy and baby health information, prenatal yoga and massage demonstrations and information, first-aid for children, child seat safety education and checks, giveaways, and children’s activities. Community members will also get the opportunity to meet local obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, doulas, lactation consultants, and pediatricians.

Join the Center for Craft for an Asheville food and art tours co-led by local food writer, blogger, and podcaster, Stu Helm and craft expert, Anna Helgeson. Throughout this two-mile walking tour, Stu and Anna will offer ways to understand Asheville’s urban landscape and restaurant scene through the craft philosophy—thoughtful making with a reverence for process and material.

That’s why we’re keeping the Park open after hours, so that our Annual Passholders can enjoy spectacular views of the Hickory Nut Gorge as the sun sets. Samples of local craft beer from Hickory Nut Gorge Brewery, other ice-cold beverages, light appetizers and special animal programs from Park Naturalists are sure to make this an evening you won’t want to miss.

The 15th annual Hunter Subaru WNC Flyer (formerly called Fletcher Flyer) will be held in the “Cycling Capital of the South”, Brevard, NC. The start/finish will be at Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard, NC. What better way to spend the day than with a Bike Ride, Bluegrass, BBQ and a complimentary first Brew!
Riders will have their choice of a full century, metric century, half century, and half metric rides which wind through the valleys south of Asheville, NC. Although it is the least hilly ride in Western North Carolina, it has plenty of rolling hills to keep all riders interested. There is beautiful mountain scenery without the long mountain climbs. The Flyer is a ride for everyone from first time riders to experience riders.
This is a fully supported ride with six well-stocked rest stops and an after ride party, including BBQ, a Bluegrass band, a beer (1st beer compliments of Oskar Blues) and a root beer float shooter.
