Three weekly farmers tailgate markets in Buncombe County will operate through the winter in 2022. Though smaller, these markets will continue to offer the freshest seasonal produce in addition to meats, eggs, cheeses, bread, beverages, and artisan foods. Expect to see storage crops, like sweet potatoes, potatoes, and winter squash, plus cold-weather veggies like turnips, radishes, and dark leafy greens.
Buncombe County farmers markets with weekly dates January to March are:
ASAP Farmers Market, outdoors at A-B Tech Community College, 340 Victoria Rd., Saturdays, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Averaging 45 vendors each week with more than two dozen produce farms, half a dozen bakers, several meat and cheese producers, coffee, and a wide variety of artisan and prepared foods.
River Arts District Farmers Market, outdoors and indoors at Plēb Urban Winery, 289 Lyman St., Wednesdays, 3–5:30 p.m. Two dozen weekly vendors, including two produce farms, mushrooms, cheese, bread and baked goods, and more.
Weaverville Tailgate Market, indoors at Weaverville Community Center, 60 Lakeshore Dr., Wednesdays, 3–6 p.m. Bread, cheese, and fermented food makers alongside a small lineup of craft and artisan vendors.

The Garden Helpline is open March 2 through October 27 in 2022.

It’s all about moss magic! Asheville native and nationally-recognized expert on moss gardening, Annie Martin, a.k.a. Mossin’ Annie, shares her passion for mosses, blending her knowledge of bryophytes and successful gardening techniques. Annie has earned her reputation as an expert through years of personal research and experimentation with moss gardening methods.
In this presentation, you will learn the environmental advantages of eco-friendly mosses and her practical, how-to tips to create your own magic moss garden. Please note there will be NO video of this presentation for later viewing.

This class will go over principles of design that can be applied to any scale of production, from the backyard garden to the commercial farm.
We will cover aspects of design from permaculture, keyline design, and the holistic management framework.

As we plan our summer gardens, the challenges of growing tomatoes here in Western North Carolina come to mind. In our newest video, Master Gardener Phil Roudebush will help us maximize our yields of these luscious fruits. He will talk about tomato varieties and how to successfully control diseases through cultural practices and appropriate chemical usage. Phil has years of experience with tomatoes and you are sure to learn something new.
Organic Growers School is excited to bring this training opportunity to Southern Appalachia in partnership with Certified Naturally Grown. Holistic Crop Management aka CNG’s Bootcamp South, is a six-part webinar series led by local farmers and agricultural resource specialists. Growers will gain the tools to manage soil health, weeds, pests and diseases for whole-farm success.

Did you know one of the oldest community food forests is located in Asheville? With over 40 varieties of fruit and nut trees, a butterfly habitat, and annual vegetable garden, maintaining this space named for the famous inventor and agricultural scientist is a year-round job for volunteers.
Come work in the George Washington Carver Edible Park and help maintain Asheville’s first edible park. Bountiful Cities will be on hand to lead the work day and provide an educational session.
