We are recruiting volunteers to support the efforts of local middle school students in an annual writing competition, Do The Write Thing. Open to all Asheville City and Buncombe County middle school students, this national competition, hosted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, encourages students to examine the causes and impact of youth violence and to share their ideas to stop it.
Your Role
We are seeking volunteers to read, review and score each student’s written submission (essay, poem, short story, or song). This is an excellent opportunity to support and engage with students and make a positive impact in our community.
Volunteers are needed on March 29 & 30. For full details, and to volunteer, click the button below. Thank you for supporting our youth as they work to develop solutions that make a difference in our community.

Literacy Together has a determined group of students waiting for volunteer tutors so they can move forward on their goals for a better future. We’re offering in-person and remote volunteer opportunities. We have programs teaching English to immigrants, adult literacy for folks working on a GED, and youth literacy for kids struggling to learn to read. In addition, we welcome everyone -even if they are not ready to volunteer- to attend to learn about the literacy challenges we face in Buncombe County. Thank you!

Performances are coordinated with and performed for audiences in non-traditional spaces such as homeless shelters, correctional facilities, community centers, low income senior centers and locations throughout rural Western North Carolina. For schools, the Community Tour offers student workshops with teaching artists from the Ensemble.
The Community Tour also includes a series of ticketed performances for audiences at NC Stage. Performances at NC Stage are staged in an intimate setting with all the lights on so our audiences may enjoy the performances as it is experienced at each tour location.
