When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.
In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

This award is given to an outstanding person. In keeping with the spirit of giving in East Tennessee, the CCC Award encourages volunteerism, philanthropy and community involvement.
WHO DOES THIS BENEFIT?
Senior Citizens Home Assistance Service (SCHAS) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to help keep seniors and the disabled in their homes and provide respite for their families with kind, trained, in-home caregivers. SCHAS serves 20 counties throughout East Tennessee. Unlike other care giving agencies, SCHAS offers financial aid, known as a sliding scale fee, to clients who need the services but cannot afford the full fee nor are eligible for government assistance. Through grants, fundraisers and support from the United Way, SCHAS can help those with the greatest need. This event is SCHAS Cocke County’s largest fundraiser. We’re starting a new all ages book club at Spellbound called the Action Book Club. We’ll read about a subject and then take concrete action to make our community a better place. We’ll meet every other month, with the current theme and a list of suggested books at every reading level announced ahead of time. Pick one for the whole family to read together or everyone who wants to wants to participate can read a book on their own. At the meeting, we’ll gather to take part in an easy and fun service project that ties in with the theme. The youngest kids may need help from an adult, but everyone should be able to participate.
For our very first meeting, we’re excited to partner with Asheville Humane Society. We’ll be making no-sew toys for dogs and cats. Staff at the Humane Society will give them to animals in the shelter and in their foster program to provide fun, comfort, and stimulation.
