Each Tuesday and Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., April through October, trained volunteer guides lead small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season, topics of discussion include wildflowers, plant and tree identification, natural history, and the cultural and land use history of The North Carolina Arboretum. Guides may include areas such as the Natural Garden Trail and Bent Creek.
Programs are held rain or shine and participants should dress appropriately for the weather. Individuals should also wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Walks last 1.5- 2.5 hours, depending upon the interest of the group, and are approximately one to two miles in length. Due to length and content, this program is not recommended for children under 8 years of age.
Walks begin in the Baker Exhibit Center Lobby and space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of five or more are required to pre-register by calling 828-665-2492. Walks are FREE, however, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Arboretum Society Members always park free.
Due to size limitations of the tours, groups of 10 or more are required to book a private guided trail tour.
Join us for our new monthly Jazz Brunch with the Firecracker Jazz Band and Culture SHOCK Food Truck!
In hundreds of performances since 2003, Firecracker Jazz Band has played everywhere from street corners, speakeasies, jazz festivals from coast to coast, beer-soaked dance halls, Bonaroo and the Kennedy Center. Based in the beautiful confluence of plentiful music and majestic mountains that is Asheville, N.C., a performance by Firecracker Jazz Band is not to be missed. With jubilant vigor that spills from the stage to the streets, these six musicians revitalize traditional jazz with unbounded energy. In paying homage to the pioneers of early 20th Century Jazz, including that of Dixieland and New Orleans, Firecracker Jazz Band carries the torch that was once lit by such greats as Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong & Bix Beiderbecke.
So bring your dancing shoes and remember: Speak Easy, Dance Hard.

The Grassy Fork Volunteer Fire Department’s Pigeon River 5K is a unique and great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Smoky Mountains of Eastern Tennessee along the Pigeon River. This event offers participants an option to run a standard 5K at 2:00 pm and/or to join a 1 Mile Color Fun Walk/Run at 3:00 pm. The course is flat and very scenic traveling through the Appalachian Mountains. The BONUS to this run, is that it is helping to fund the operations of the new fire station in Hartford. Station 2 provides protection for the 11 rafting companies which raft the Pigeon River, 13 miles of I-40, the community of Hartford, Tennessee as well as the community of Mount Sterling, NC and the Big Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This event will be an excellent event for the whole family.
Registration will open at noon. There is plenty of parking. Each pre-registered participate will receive a number, t-shirt (registered by August 23rd), 2 bags of color (color run registrants only), and a fun bag. Extra t-shirts, color and sun glasses will be for sale while supplies last. The course will start in front of Rafting in The Smokies – Pigeon River Rafting, Ziplining & Family Adventures. The 5K Run will start at 2:00 pm and the 1 Mile Color Fun Run/Walk will start at 3:00 pm. The Sheriff’s Department will close the course (Hartford Road) just before the run. The relatively flat course will travel Hartford Road towards Lindsey Gap Bridge and return to Hartford. Run waivers will need to be signed at registration. Those participating in the Color Run will also need to bring appropriate clothing and eye protection (we will have some sunglasses for sale) for this run. There will be several options for food at local restaurants, before, during and after the runs. Local and regional firefighters joining us in the 5K run are welcome to wear turnouts.

DADDY LONG LEGS
Music & Lyrics by Paul Gordon
Book by John Caird
Directed by Maegan McNerney Azar
Featuring Anne Morgan and Patrick Fretwell
#FUDaddyLongLegs
September 6-8 at 8:00 pm
matinee September 9 at 3:00 pm
Based on the novel by Jean Webster, “Daddy Long Legs is a charming, moving tribute to the indomitable spirit of a remarkable young lady.” This new musical takes audiences back to 1908 where an 18-year-old orphan, Jerusha Abbott, gets the opportunity to attend college, thanks to a mysterious benefactor who will not reveal his identity. In return, he asks only of a small favor: a letter each month detailing how college is treating Jerusha.
On the flip side, Jervis Pendleton, the scholarship donor, recognizes not only Jerusha’s intelligence and wit, but also begins to fall in love with the woman who writes to him. But Jervis, who Jerusha gives the pet name “Daddy Long Legs,” struggles over whether to reveal his identity, knowing this might ruin any connection between the two.
Audiences will recognize the challenges of growing up in Jerusha’s letters and see that charitable actions, along with a willingness to be vulnerable and honest, is the secret to happiness. This upbeat and charming musical will “fully involve us in the story of how a good deed comes to change two people whose ideas are ahead of their time.”

The Magnetic Theatre will present the world premiere of Karen Saari’s intimate, affirming, and heartfelt play, IN A CLEARING.
Mark is three months into sobriety. He is still haunted by the death of close friend, who died in an unexplained roadside accident after a night of hard partying. Seeing friends, family, and the world in a whole new light; Mark rekindles a relationship with Pam, an old “friend” from school and the aggrieved sister of his dead friend, and finally solves the mysteries of his own heart.
The production is being directed by Andrew Gall, The Magnetic Theatre’s co-Artistic Director.
Featuring:
Thomas Traugaer
