Asheville NC: Heather Mae & Sarah Clanton
Oct 4 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Isis Music Hall

Life is weird, and these ladies are here to embrace it and you! Come on out, share a laugh, a drink, a story and a song with positively pop-tactic singer songwriters Sarah Clanton and Heather Mae, kicking off The “Be You” Tour!

Lounge Seated :: $15 Advance // $15 Day of Show

HEATHER MAE
http://www.heathermae.net
instagram.com/heathermaemusic
Three powerful words and the title track to Heather Mae‘s sophomore effort, “I AM ENOUGH” is an ode to body positivity and breaking away from self imposed affliction to fit into what is “beautiful”. The album became a Kickstarter staff back within its first week, peaking at #58 on the iTunes Pop Charts. Following her debut release, Mae had been diagnosed with nodules on her vocal chords. Through a difficult recovery, she vowed that her new music would be sincere, significant, fearless. Heather has since been on a journey of creative liberation, breaking ground within an inventive indie pop sound (think Sara Bareilles, meets Tegan and Sara, meets the vocal tenacity of Etta James) and taking on important subjects like LGBTQ discrimination, gender stereotypes, body image, and mental health. “I see this record is a platform for a change. Pop music with a mission,” declares Heather Mae. Dubbed “the new queer Adele” by L-Mag, Heather Mae won the 2017 Rocky Mountain Folks Fest Songwriter Showcase in Lyons, CO and has opened and shared the stage for acclaimed musical artists such as Emily Saliers (Indigo Girls), Holly Near, Chris Pureka, Tom Goss, and Danielle Ate the Sandwich.

SARAH CLANTON
http://www.sarahclanton.com
instagram.com/sarahcello
Part comedy, part concert, Sarah Clanton’s “speakeasy pop’icana” show is a cellobration of the unexpected. The singer-cellist-songwriter strums, bows, picks, and taps through stories of hope and heart, pulling audiences right into the moment. Classically trained but now playing out of the “box,” Clanton’s vocals transcend from moonlit night to house on fire, with a tone that blends smoke with sunlight, landing somewhere between Amy Winehouse and Norah Jones.

“We Belong” Sarah’s latest single and official music video release have set the stage for a full length record (due late October 2018) that has collaboratively evolved from a self care journey, through conversations and good company, through mindfulness and gratitude. The result? Music with a sense of “feel good.” (Disclaimer: this music make encourage or induce anxiety reducing sensations that come with keeping with the present moment.)

The Black Lillies at the National Storytelling Festival
Oct 4 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
International Storytelling Center

The Black Lillies have never backed down from a challenge. Proudly independent since their formation, they are always pushing forward and evolving, letting the inspiration and music take focus. That drive has led them to become one of Americana’s biggest success stories: an internationally-renowned band of roots-rockers, armed with songs that blur the boundaries between folk, soul, red dirt country, blues and rock.

With four albums under their belts, the band has been a mainstay on radio and album sales charts, promoting each release in the blue-collar tradition: by hitting the highway, averaging 175 gigs per year. That road-warrior work ethic has become as integral to the band’s success as founder Cruz Contreras’ songwriting, taking the band from coast to coast, border to border, and even country to country. And they have racked up accolades as easily as the miles on their Sprinter, winning praise from outlets including American Songwriter, Rolling Stone, NPR, CMT, Wall Street Journal and Billboard.

The Black Lillies have enthralled audiences at festivals including Bonnaroo Music + Arts, New Orleans Jazz Fest, MerleFest, Stagecoach, CMA Fest & Fan Fair, and Pickathon. Equally at home on theatre stages and in rock clubs, they were one of the first independent bands to play the Grand Ole Opry and have since returned dozens of times – sharing that stage with big-budget bands and major-label mainstreamers. They’ve chased down success on their terms, ignoring the trends of Nashville and focusing on a sound that, as Vanity Fair notes, “continues to cross generations and musical genres – country, folk, blues and a touch of the Dead, for good measure.”

After a major lineup change in 2016 following the departure of two longterm members, bassist/vocalist Sam Quinn joined the fold. A musician with his own cult following due to his role as one half of the driving force behind indie folk darlings the everybodyfields as well as his solo work, he initially signed on to fill in for four shows … but the chemistry was undeniable, and he stayed. Soon after, guitar slinger/vocalist Dustin Schaefer, fresh off a stint with Micky and the Motorcars and a singer/songwriter in his own right, jumped into the mix. And suddenly, the group went from a band with one songwriter to a band with three – plus a drummer, longtime member Bowman Townsend, who helps with song arrangements.

After eight years, four albums, and over a thousand shows, The Black Lillies have evolved from a group of people playing Cruz’s music to a REAL BAND – a group of collaborators who spend as much time together off the road as they do on the road; where everyone contributes and weighs in on the ultimate vision; where a song could be written by any member (or multiple members); where the music takes priority over absolutely everything else. They’re building on that foundation of strong roots rock and creating something brand new. Even classic Black Lillies songs sound fresh and reimagined in their hands – with lush, layered harmonies, a funky edge, and the undeniable chemistry that radiates from the musicians on stage.

With a new configuration, new songs and the same dedication to touring, the Lillies continue to sink their roots deep into the musical landscape. The band will head into the studio in February to begin work on their new album, due out fall 2018 on Thirty Tigers.

Kuzu (Rempis/Dorji/Damon) w/ Bruce Lamont, Kevin Hufnagel
Oct 4 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
The Mothlight

KUZU (Rempis/Dorji/Damon)
w/ Bruce Lamont, Kevin Hufnagel
October 4th at The Mothlight
Doors 8pm
Tickets: $8adv, https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1757208?utm_medium=bks

KUZU is a hard-charging but patient trio that came together in the fall of 2017, after saxophonist Dave Rempis, a stalwart of the Chicago improvised music scene, worked with both Tashi Dorji (guitar) and Tyler Damon (drums) individually as part of a lengthy solo tour of the U.S. that he undertook in the spring of that year. Dorji and Damon’s work as a guitar/percussion duo has become well-known, a highly refined and specific language developed through relentless touring and recording over the last few years, with a sound that straddles improvised music, rock, and any number of as-yet-undefined territories. These two provide an incredibly fresh take on the possibilities inherent to spontaneous composition. Superimposing Rempis into this mix was a logical next step after the relationships they’d forged individually. The trio’s forthcoming debut record Hiljaisuus (“silence” in Finnish…) is slated for release on the well-known Astral Spirits label in summer 2018, to be followed by two separate tours of the United States in late summer and fall.

Musically, these three create a highly focused pallet of sounds. At times, spacious gestures carve up the canvas with the austerity of a calligrapher, while at others those sparse gestures build into an unstoppable tsunami of energy. Those waves are never impulsive or impetuous though, they ebb and flow logically and patiently out of simple and clearly defined sources. This trio pursues every gesture with tenacity, passing them back and forth until they’ve explored every facet of an idea.

Eliada’s Annual Corn Maze
Oct 4 @ 9:29 pm

This year, Eliada will maintain some beloved attractions including the tractor ride, which now drives all the way around the Corn Maze, jumping pillow, corn kernel sand box, spider web climber, tube slides, and corn cannons.

Eliada is pleased to announce that the corn planted in the field is Non-GMO, and that Eliada used all natural fertilizers to help the corn grow.
The Corn Maze raises $100,000 for the agency every year, and we have come to rely on this event to support our programs,” says Davis-Bryant. “I never thought I’d have a job in which I relied on a field of corn growing! Changing up how we planted the corn field meant a lot to us, but was also a risk. I am proud of the agency for engaging in this kind of risk taking. The corn has grown beautifully, and we can be proud of the ways we have improved the event for the long-term sustainability of our land.
This year, Eliada is also adding beer and cider sales to the makeup of the event.

This option, available to guests only on weekends (Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons), will help the agency increase revenue to support the growing needs children and youth face in our community. Eliada is excited to work with local and national partners to provide an array of beer and cider options!

Manic Focus

Manic Focus is the beat-bumpin’ project of John “JmaC” McCarten, a Chicago-based electronic music producer hailing from the Twin Cities. A multi-dimensional artist with a rowdy style unbound to any one genre, Manic Focus transcends sound waves by fusing soulful blues with heavy-hitting bass, creating a resonating tone that’s entirely his own.

Over the last 5 years, JmaC has released four full-length albums, each one a new evolution in sound and approach. His most recent album, Cerebral Eclipse, was released on All Good Records, a label quickly making a name for itself as a tastemaker in the modern electronic music scene. He has completed a slew of official remixes for artists such as GRiZ, The Floozies, Lettuce, Minnesota and Pretty Lights, and released several works with Pretty Lights Music veterans Break Science.

On the road, JmaC has been steadily building his live performance to include additional musicians and elements of production. Jacob Barinholtz is now a mainstay on the drums, and other musical co-conspirators join the two on select dates around the country. He’s also been known to incorporate surprise guests such as Big Gigantic’s Dominic Lalli, GRiZ, The Floozies’ Matt Hill, and Russ Liquid, to name a few. Occasionally, fans are treated to the rare live fusion of Break Science and Manic Focus, taking the stage as Manic Science.

In the studio, JmaC continues to push himself to new musical limits by incorporating original, sample-free recordings of many up-and-coming musical allies. This is especially apparent in the material from his forthcoming album, Minds Rising, to be released Fall of 2016.

Whether it’s at a small-town venue or a world-renowned music festival on his nationwide headlining tour, you won’t want to miss a Manic Focus throw-down.

The diverse elements of his music are tied together with Esseks’ subtle but instantly recognizable sound. It is dark but in a playful sense. He has built up a large catalog of music since his first release in 2012 with releases on Wakaan, Saturate, Sleevelss Records, Gravitas Recordings, Foundations Recordings, and Smokers Cough along with a number of self releases.
