An Evening with the Meadows Brothers
Nov 15 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Isis Music Hall

$12 Advance / $12 Day of Show

“Blending folk and country with a blues edge, the brothers Meadows pack a powerful punch for being just two dudes armed with only a couple acoustic guitars and a harmonica. But their harmonies are the type of stuff only siblings can usually muster and their songs smack of souls much older than their earthly years would let on.”

Ian and Dustin Meadows are the Meadows Brothers. They share that essential brother-band DNA: a telepathic tightness, the ability to stop and start vocal phrases in lockstep, to fall effortlessly into close harmonies, trade off phrases and navigate together the fresh expression of American roots music they create.

Intro to Samba with Vivie // 4 Week Series
Nov 15 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Studio Zahiya

An introduction to the fun & exciting Brazilian street dance. Samba owes its rhythm and moves to African dances. The traditional African circle dance with a lone central performer relied on weight shifts, rapid steps, and slides to a 2/4 percussive beat, and a fairly still upper body with arms and hands responding to the hip and leg movements. samba is irresistible, its gyrations richly colored by regional and international influences. Today, it would be impossible to imagine carnival without samba.

Dearly Departed
Nov 15 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Mars Hill University

Award winning New York City director and actor Reginald Wilson will be the guest director of “Dearly Departed,” the next play presented by Mars Hill University’s theatre arts department. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, November 15-17, 2018, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, November 18. The production will feature director talkbacks after each performance; an opening night reception before the production on Thursday, November 15; and a diversity improv workshop at 12 p.m. on Sunday, November 18. Extra events are included with ticket purchases for that day’s performance.

Dearly Departed, written by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones, is a fast moving play that takes place in the backwoods of the Bible Belt. The beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpins’ other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students with student identification, free for Mars Hill University students and staff. For more information, contact the Owen Theatre box office at (828) 689-1389.

Emmalee & Megan of Mountain Bitters
Nov 15 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
OM Sanctuary

Emmalee Hunnicutt explores the subtleties of sound with her inventive cello playing. Working in the realms of texture and emotion, her work acknowledges the mysterious nature of art and life. In addition to writing and performing as a solo artist, she is also part of a number of collaborative projects including Mountain Bitters and Library of Babel. Find her music at https://soundcloud.com/mooniris0 and emmaleehunnicutt.bandcamp.com

Mountain Bitters is an acoustic folk trio based out of Asheville, NC. The band consists of Emmalee Hunnicutt on Cello, guitar & vocals, Gretchen Caverly on 5-string viola, fiddle & vocals, and Megan Drollinger on fiddle, mandolin & vocals. Performing an assortment of styles including Celtic, Cajun and Appalachian Folk, their instrumental arrangements, informed by their early Classical training, are original and compelling. Often setting down their instruments to sing a capella, their intuitive harmonies could be described as intoxicating and more than a little haunting. Metamorphoses
Nov 15 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Carol Belk Theatre

“Metamorphoses” condenses Ovid’s epic and selects the most powerful myths to illustrate the theme of change. The gods, though “not altogether unkind,” exert their influence on the mortal world by dramatically interfering with the lives of humans.
From Midas to Orpheus, and from Alcyone to Baucis, mortals undergo various metamorphoses, or physical changes, which reflect their internal traits. Hubris is punished, while charity and love are rewarded. To stress the timeless nature of these myths, some take place in antiquity, while others have anachronistic references to better tie their stories to today. These myths, however, offer more than just simple morals like the importance of humility and piety. “Metamorphoses” also shows why myths themselves retain importance and relevance.

It is brilliant and quietly addictive” – The London Guardian

“New York’s hottest and hippest literary ticket” – The Wall Street Journal

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. It is a celebration of both the raconteur, who breathes fire into true tales of ordinary life, and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. At the center of each performance is, of course, the story – and The Moth’s directors work with each storyteller to find, shape and present it.

Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide.

Moth shows are renowned for the great range of human experience they showcase. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience.

Moth stories dissolve socio-economic barriers, expose vulnerabilities, and quietly suggest ways to overcome challenges and see with new eyes.

Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Chaz Bear (formerly Bundick) has been actively involved in music going back to his early teenage years playing in punk and indie rock bands. Bear unveiled his Toro y Moi guise in 2001, in which he began incorporating electronics and channeling a wider swath of stylistic influences — from indie rock and ’60s baroque pop to ’80s R&B, French house, and underground hip-hop — into his own solo music. By the time he graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2009 with a BA in graphic design, Bear had refined Toro y Moi into a truly unique, captivating project, with numerous music magazines and blogs touting his hazy recordings as the sound of summer. His Carpark-released debut album, Causers of This, would follow in early 2010 and garnered high praise in many publications including NME and Pitchfork.

With each subsequent record, Bear revealed himself to be as prolific as diverse. From the space-age funk of 2011’s Underneath the Pine to the introspective, house-tinged pop and soul of 2013’s Anything in Return, to the ’70s radio gold influences percolating throughout 2015’s What For?, Bear consistently steered Toro y Moi in new directions while never sacrificing his melodic sensibility or keen ear for arrangements and texture. Although his most recent excursions — last year’s stunning concert film/album, Live from Trona (featuring an expanded line-up of Toro y Moi’s touring group performing in the California desert), and his Star Stuff collaboration with jazz duo the Mattson 2 (just released in late March on Carpark sister label Company Records, which Bear runs) — were full-band affairs, his latest Toro y Moi album is a much more personal outing.

Recorded and produced by Bear in Portland, Oregon, between March 2016 and March 2017, the spacious arrangements mirror the intimate, soft-hued pop of Boo Boo. Eschewing the traditional rock instrumentation of What For?, slow-pulsing neon synths and electronics are once again far more prevalent, with subtle ’80s influences finespun through his song craft. Throughout, Bear plays all of the instruments, with the exception of guest spots from Anthony Ferraro (a/k/a Astronauts, etc. and also Toro y Moi’s live keyboardist) and Madeline Kenney (Company Records recording artist). Toro y Moi’s most reflective album to date, the woozy contemplations and daydreams of Boo Boo point toward an idyllic path of catharsis for not only the listener, but for Chaz Bear himself.
