We are seeking volunteers to assist us in our small after school program for children in West Asheville in low-income housing. We provide a safe and nourishing environment, healthy snacks, and creative activities. Our program currently meets during the school year on most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00-5:00pm. You may volunteer for one or two days a week.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Assist with serving snacks
- Interact with children during activity time
- Supervise games and outdoor free time
- For people with background in education, there is also an opportunity to assist with curriculum development and program planning and administration
Requirements:

- Orientation booklets will be provided
- Masks are required if unvaccinated
Float down Mud Creek between N. Main Street and Balfour Road, cleaning up trash. Can provide canoes for eight people but encourages anyone who has their own canoe or kayak to bring them

The state of North Carolina recognizes June 6th, 2023, as “Secure Your Load Day.” This day focuses on educating people about the danger of unsecured truckloads and the environmental harm it presents. Therefore, GreenWorks is organizing a Secure Your Load Day event. The event will consist of a cleanup in the morning and an all-day-long call to action.
Need to know
Dress in comfortable walking shoes and clothes. Meet at 230 Hominy Creek Road (right outside French Broad Outfitters) at 9:30 am.
After signing in, volunteers will receive their cleanup gear. Then, we’ll review safety and instructions before heading out to cover Hominy Creek Road.
For parents who want to bring young children, please note that there are no sidewalks on Hominy Creek Road, and there is usually high traffic of cars and trucks.
We rely on financial support from our community to inspire, equip and mobilize volunteers who make an impact. Please consider making a gift in support of this event.
Join us for weekly workdays in the Sand Hill native tree nursery. Tasks vary and often include repotting, weeding, mulching, and other special projects to improve infrastructure and function.
Need to know
Please come dressed in work clothes with close toed shoes. Bring water and sun protection. All other gear and supplies are provided.

Auditions for our September show, Honky Tonk Angels, will be held
Sunday, July 16, 2023 @ 3:00 p.m. and
Monday, July 17, 2023 @ 7:00 p.m.
at Tryon Little Theater Workshop, 516 S. Trade St., Tryon, NC.
Show dates: September 28- October 1 (5 performances at Tryon Fine Arts Center).
Rehearsals will begin mid-August. Director: Dan Harvey & Music Director: Pam McNeil
Needed: 3 women
Strong singers in the country/gospel style
Each Auditioner will:
1. Sing a short SOLO in the country or gospel style. (Bring sheet music for the accompanist.)
2. Participate in a short DANCE audition.
3. READ from the script.
When three gutsy gals from different backgrounds take charge of their lives, they decide to follow their honky tonk dreams to the city of Nashville. Combining 30 classic country tunes (including “Stand By Your Man,” “9 to 5,” “Harper Valley PTA,” and more!) Honky Tonk Angels is a hilarious, foot-stomping good time from the creator of Always… Patsy Cline.
CHARACTERS:
– ANGELA (late 30s- early 40s). A Texas housewife who has a great sense of humor and a fiercely independent streak. She identifies with “Roseanne,” an earth-mother comedienne.
– DARLENE (late teens- early 20s). A young woman from the Deep South. She is pretty, sweet, and simple. She grew up in a coal mining town in West Virginia and the Mississippi Delta. She plays simple guitar. She also clogs.
– SUE ELLEN (early to mid- 30s). A Los Angeles career woman. She is a “citified” country girl. Smart, very attractive, sexy and frustrated. She dances, roller skates, and twirls baton (if possible). She also clogs. She should be a very good dancer.

Literacy Together (formerly Literacy Council of Buncombe County) hosts two monthly orientation meetings. Everyone is welcome to join us, from community members willing to learn more about Literacy Together’s work to prospective volunteer tutors.
We have a determined group of students waiting for volunteer tutors so they can move forward on their goals for a better future. Tutor training is via distance learning, and all tutoring sessions are online. We have programs teaching English to immigrants, adult literacy for folks working on a GED, and youth literacy for kids struggling to learn to read.

We will open applications for the film portion of the festival in fall 2023. Films must be submitted via FilmFreeway. Our application fee for films is $5.
NOW CONSIDERING WORKS OF ALL KINDS
We accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length, your piece may be grouped with another show, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public, and artists receive a stipend for their performance, rather than relying on door sales.
Typically each artist with a ticketed show gets 2 performances. But in 2024, we’re exploring the option of giving a few shows 3 performances, at select venues only. Our venues range from 20-80 person capacity.

We are gearing up for a youth talent showcase to be held at Burial Beer (South Slope location) at our August 13 event: LEAF Famtastic Sunday. The Talent Showcase will kick off at Burial starting at 1 p.m. Want to be part of it? Auditions are on Saturdays in July at LEAF Global Arts. The talent showcase is free to enter and the August 13 event is free as well.
