Music Video Asheville
Sep 10 @ 7:00 pm
Wortham Center for the Performing Arts

The 17th Annual Music Video Asheville showcases creative collaborations between musicians and filmmakers. Bands from Asheville and beyond submit their full-length music videos for a chance to win cash, a 100-album record pressing by American Vinyl Co and Donaldson Record Pressing Co, a day in the studio at Citizen Vinyl and recognition.

The annual event usually receives around 100 submissions, and approximately 30 of the best entries will be selected as finalists for viewing at the red-carpet runway awards ceremony on September 10, 2025, at Wortham Center’s Diana Wortham Theatre in downtown Asheville. The winners will be chosen by a judging panel of over 25 local and national judges. Attendees will have the chance to vote for People’s Choice.

“The film festival uses judging as an opportunity to share work with film and music industries in other parts of the country,” says MVA founder Jenny Greer Fares. “We’ve worked hard over the years to focus on the art form of putting visuals to music, storytelling, cinematography, etc… as opposed to hosting a popularity contest. We work as a team to get diverse judges from all over, who are experts in the music and film industries. The People’s Choice is a crowd favorite award and is the exception. Audience members text their favorite video selection at the event, and this usually is a locally loved act who deserves recognition, like Andrew Scotchie’s video “Love is Enough” in 2024.”

“This event was invented by musicians, and the filmmakers are the ones submitting the films and helping bring the artistic visions to life,” says Fares. “Filmmaking is very collaborative and so is music making. We want to celebrate those collaborations and Asheville’s culture.”

On Naked Truth (his 21st album), Ellis swaps his blistering, guitar-fueled full band workouts for equally passionate, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. His famed guitar chops and musical creativity are on full display throughout the album’s 12 songs, including nine newly written originals. Naked Truth was produced by Ellis, with the foot-stomping cover of Son House’s Death Letter Blues produced by Atlanta roots musician Eddie 9V. The album was recorded live in the studio using Ellis’ beloved 1969 Martin D-35 (a gift from his father) and his 1937 National Steel O Series guitars. Whether intricately fingerpicking the Martin or playing hair-raising slide on the National Steel, Ellis delivers each song with unvarnished intimacy.

Jake Kohn & Low Water Bridge Band
Sep 15 @ 8:00 pm
Grey Eagle Music Hall

JAKE KOHN
From Stephens City, Virginia, Jake Kohn is a singer/songwriter on a clear path to stardom. At only 17 years old, Jake’s unusually deep voice and songwriting ability have garnered the attention of some of his favorite artists. 2024 saw him play festivals such as Mile 0 Festival, MerleFest, Newport Folk Festival, Pickathon, and Bourbon & Beyond. In addition to a slew of headline dates, he supported Sierra Ferrell, Sam Barber, and Wyatt Flores. Stay tuned for what Jake has in store for 2025.

It is not lost on Jake that he is playing shows beyond his years. In fact, he is still awestruck when people recognize him. Whether it is signing a poster for a fan or being invited to see Tommy Prine’s release show, Jake is consistently surprised and grateful to be at this point in his 4-year career.

LOW WATER BRIDGE BAND
There’s a sound the Shenandoah River makes as it rumbles over old stones in the shallows. It sings songs the way they used to be – plain and honest. No frills, buckle that belt before you head to the hills and hollers. It’s there under a Virginia moon that you’ll find the Low Water Bridge Band.

Forged by firelight picking, the band’s romping, stomping, country-grass Americana ain’t for the faint of heart. Since their founding in 2020, they’ve gone from barnstorming the Shenandoah Valley to festival stages along the East Coast. Venues from the Carolinas to Kentucky and, yes, Nashville, Tennessee ring with their sound and are asking for more.

THE WELLERMEN – Tour Tales
Sep 17 @ 7:30 pm
Diana Wortham Theatre

MaxxMusic presents: THE WELLERMEN – Tour Tales

Wed, Sept 17 • 7:30 pm

Music is storytelling, and some of the best stories have been told through centuries-old traditional folk songs. On their new album ‘Northern Sky’, The Wellermen have given this rich traditional musical history a new sound.

The Wellermen’s history is well-known: originators of the sea shanty trend on TikTok, they’ve since gone from strength to strength. Their versions of ‘Misty Mountains’, ‘Nancy Mulligan’, and ‘Hoist The Colours’ have racked up billions of views and led them to appearances on shows like Ant and Dec, Last Week Tonight, The Colbert Show and more.

The group has now returned with their new album ‘Northern Sky’. Among much-loved traditionals such as ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’, ‘Amazing Grace’, and ‘Red Is The Rose’, you will find more modern songs such as a tribute to Johnny Cash on ‘Hurt’ and a lively version of ‘The Nights’. The band also presents originals ‘Northern Sky’ – inspired by maritime life in the Hebrides in the 18th century, and the humorous ‘Tall Tales’ – a one-upmanship of the telling of wild sea adventures.

Say the Wellermen: “It’s all about connection and storytelling, and we hope the listeners are able to find something meaningful.” One thing is absolutely certain: these talented young men are in it for the long haul.
