Join us for our Juneteenth Cinema at Swannanoa Library! Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, Harriet tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. For teens and adults, run time 126 minutes and snacks will be provided. This event is free, but you do need to register. A night of Live Comedy with in our cozy, vape-friendly Rezonance VIP Lounge, featuring a 3-course cannabis-infused dinner and infused drink, samples from local brands, and a goodie bag of dispensary freebies worth $50+!

We’ll discuss the issues we care about most deeply and craft a plan to respond to events as they occur in real time.

The group meets the first and third Monday of each month for writing, responding to one another’s work, scheduling submissions, and exploring media outlets across the state.

While communally creating this flag, learn the history and meaning of this flag and all that it represents.  This program will continue for entire month of June where the community can add to it over time. All ages are welcome to contribute.

In 2014, a group of Vietnam combat veterans began meeting at the Charles George VA Hospital in Asheville to participate in a unique creative writing program. The focus was capturing their stories through essays and poetry to find the voices war had taken from them. The hope was to reclaim a sense of their shared humanity, build camaraderie and find some degree of healing.

To continue this work, the NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation will be offering free creative writing classes at the East Asheville Library in June and July. The goal is to provide healing through the art of creative writing to all veterans in our community.

Join other veterans for this series of classes on Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. from June 11-July 30 at the East Asheville library. To sign up, please e-mail Ron Toler at [email protected].

Taste some traditional Juneteenth foods and learn about the holiday and African-American culinary history with two documentaries:

LEAF Global is excited to be a part of Juneteenth on The Block, Wednesday, June 19. LEAF will be hosting art-making on the parklet (just outside our front door) from 4-7 p.m.

Join Slice of Life Comedy Friday June 21 at pleb urban winery for a fun Asheville Standup Comedy Pageant! We are raising money for 103.3ashevillefm our local community radio station, they produce diverse and eclectic programming that inspires listeners to build connections across our communities and discovers new music and ideas. This comedy show is moderated by your AFM friends at slumberpartyavl Jake Ali & Michele and hosted by the amazing Asheville treasure, Hillary Begley The contestants are the winners of 3 previous contests held at The Orange Peel’s Pulp Jason Webb Ryan Gordon (the third final contest is selected June 13) There will be games, standup and silliness. Hendersonville Theatre is a small theatre that welcomes actors, dancers, and singers of all experience levels. You don’t need any experience to audition. We are hosting auditions for our upcoming One-Act Festival at our theatre in Hendersonville, NC, and we will also accept video auditions.

One-Act Festival roles are open to anyone ages 16 and over who lives throughout Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina. All experience levels are welcome to audition. Our actors are compensated through audience donations, so we do not guarantee a stipend or provide housing, meals, or pay for rehearsals. However, we offer a warm, friendly, and creative environment where you can showcase your talents and feel appreciated for your contribution.

We encourage performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, and ages, as well as performers with disabilities, to attend our audition.

Buncombe County Parks & Recreation’s annual firework display is returning to Lake Julian Park, and will be taking place on June 29, 2024. Buncombe County residents, families, friends, and neighbors are invited to experience the dazzling firework show on lawn chairs and blankets. The fireworks are scheduled to begin just after dark. It is recommended to arrive earlier to allow ample time to park and board the shuttle. Lake Julian Park is located at 37 Lake Julian Road in Arden.?

Guests are encouraged to arrive early to delight in the delicious food-truck lineup. Food trucks will be at the park from 2 to 9 p.m. There will also be an activity station where cornhole bags and horseshoes can be checked out. Disc golf and fishing will be open on the backside of the park closest to Hendersonville Road (56 Fisherman’s Trail). Please note that boat launching is not available on the backside of Lake Julian Park.

Parking on June 29 is restricted to Estes Elementary School (275 Overlook Road, Asheville). Those with a valid handicap placard can park at Lake Julian Park. There will be a shuttle transporting guests from the Estes Elementary School parking lot to Lake Julian Park from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.??

There will be one accessible boat launch at Lake Julian on June 29. Guests are allowed to bring their own boats to launch on this day. We will also be renting paddle boats. All boats must be off the water by 8 p.m. All picnic shelters will be available on a first come, first served basis.??

Before You Go:? 

• Parking will be located at Estes Elementary. There will be a shuttle transporting guests to Lake Julian from this parking lot only. Only vehicles with a valid handicap placard, or those who are boat launching may park at Lake Julian Park. Limited parking is also available in the gravel lot next to Wild Wing Cafe.
• Alcohol and tobacco products are prohibited on the grounds at Lake Julian Park.?Pets are not recommended.
• Be sure to bring a blanket or lawn chair to relax around the lake.
