Asheville’s premiere designer toy expo, *Assembly Required, is presented by Unboxing Asheville, Morgan’s Comic’s, 103.3 Asheville FM and Appalachian Pinball Museum. Focusing on this artistic movement, designer toys are a form of lowbrow pop art. These toy makers pull inspiration from a variety of subversive segments of culture, as well as subcultural elements, including (but not limited to) comics, tattooing, street art, and everything related to toys of the 60’s through the 80’s.

Get ready to throw! This 8-week beginner’s course is designed to teach new potters the fundamentals of wheel-throwing, trimming, and glazing to make a variety of complete, food-safe and functional wares. By the end of this course, students will be able to confidently make pottery in any studio setting. Seasoned beginners are also encouraged to try new techniques to reach an intermediate level.
Level: Beginner and Seasoned Beginner
Tuition: $295 + $45 Lab Fee

The League of Women Voters of Asheville-Buncombe County presents The Life and Legacy of Lillian Exum Clement at 7:00pm on Monday, March 11 at the Black Mountain Public Library, 105 N. Dougherty St., Black Mountain. Clement, a native of Black Mountain, made history in the early 1900s as the first woman attorney in North Carolina and the first female legislator in the southeast. Actor Samantha Lebrocq, in period costume and hairstyle created by Sandy McDaniel of the Montford Park Players, will portray Clement, and vocalist Alex Nuesse, also in costume, will perform an authentic suffragist song. The program is the first event in the yearlong Votes for Women! Centennial Series celebrating the upcoming 100th anniversary, in 2020, of both the creation of the League of Women Voters and the passage of the 19th (women’s suffrage) Amendment. The fourth annual South Atlantic Hops Conference: Beer and Beyond: Growing Hops for Multiple Uses and Markets
This conference is designed to educate, enlighten, and engage growers, brewers, beer enthusiasts, and other interested parties about the South Atlantic hops industry. The event will take place all day Saturday, March 16th and the first half of Sunday, March 17th. March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day which is quite the event in Asheville, especially for beer lovers. So, plan now to stay over until Monday.

Demonstration of ikebana, a Japanese flower art form. Emiko Suzuki will take her classical and oldest ikebana school up to modern times with creative and unconventional designs using kitchen utensils.

The Collider invites you to our second annual climate data hackathon, held on March 31st, 2019. CCx: Hack is part of Climate City Expo, a 10-day celebration of Asheville’s creativity and commitment to climate change awareness and action.
The CCx: Luminary track of the 2019 Climate City Expo allows the public to hear from visionary leaders who have made environmental action and a commitment to science lifelong callings. As part of that track, author, speaker, and strategist Katharine Wilkinson will lead an insightful and inspirational discussion about our climate journey on April 2 at the Diana Wortham Theater.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the discussion will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available online and at the Diana Wortham Theater box office in downtown Asheville.
Katharine has made it her life’s work to explore, amplify, and invigorate action to address climate change. As one of the most sought-after speakers at last year’s climate conference, The Collider is delighted to have her return to Asheville for CCx 2019

Our next Sowing Circle series is on April 6 featuring Chris Smith, Sow True Seed, will present Growing and Eating Heirloom Tomatoes. Chris will explore the growing and culture of heirloom tomatoes and the incredible diversity of varieties available to the home gardener – with a special emphasis on tomatoes in the southern Appalachians. We have a limited stock of free heirloom tomato seeds ~ Cherokee Purple, Mortgage Lifter and more ~ for you to start your own plants. We welcome you to bring friends as the presentation will start at 10 am in the Education Room at the Black Mountain Library, 105 N. Dougherty Street.
