Join us in Downtown Weaverville from 2pm – 7pm for food, drink, and fun in honor of Saint Patrick’s Day! The Block Party will occupy sections of Florida Avenue and Merchant’s Alley. The party will feature food vendors, a costume contest, Irish inspired beer and cocktails, music, a raffle, and more.

Green Man’s 25th Anniversary Celebration! Music Festival on St. Patrick’s day and throughout the weekend. Thursday focuses on Dirty Jack’s, Green Man’s original location; featuring the bands Supper Club, Father Son Picnic, Jeb Rogers Band, and Skunk Ruckus all inside our original taproom! Friday will have a smaller street festival feel with two local DJ’s at the Green Mansion, featuring Dj Meow Meow and DJ lyric. Saturday is the big street festival blow out! Featuring the bands Patrick Dodd, Red Clay Revival, and Empire Strikes Brass. Every day is totally free to attend and focuses on supporting the Asheville community through the WNC Bridge Foundation along with other local vendors, food trucks, and community organizations.

That’s right! Catawba has partnered up with AVL Charcuterie Co. for a Charcuterie Board Making Class! Grab a beer and head to the private back room where you’ll learn how to make a charcuterie board with Lindsey from AVL Charcuterie Co.

Asheville Charcuterie Co. will take you through the process step by step on how to make a gorgeous board to impress your family and friends. Eat your board after the class or take it home to share!

Tickets are $55 per person and each individual will receive their own board.

UNC Asheville’s Department of English welcomes guest bestselling author and memoirist Nadia Owusu to the Laurel Forum in Karpen Hall for a reading and talk as part of their spring Visiting Writers Series.

Whiting Award-winning author Nadia Owusu is a Ghanaian and Armenian-American writer and urbanist. She was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and raised in Italy, Ethiopia, England, Ghana, and Uganda. Her first book, Aftershocks, A Memoir (2021), topped many most-anticipated and best book of the year lists, including The New York Times, Oprah Magazine, Vogue, TIME, Vulture, and the BBC. It was a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice.

This is the final of three events in the 2022 Spring Visiting Writers Series presented by the UNC Asheville English Department. Previous events includes a reading and talk from Dinty Moore on February 7, and a reading and talk from Diné writer of fiction and non-fiction Natanya Ann Pulley on March 17.

The English Department’s Visiting Writers Series has provided exceptional literary arts programming that is free and open to the public. Every year, our series aims to connect students, faculty, staff, and the greater Asheville community with established authors to hear their work, and the stories behind their work. Our visiting writers have engaged with students in the classroom, over meals, and during informal presentations. Recent visiting writers include Claudia Rankine, Jericho Brown, Wally Lamb, David Ebershoff, and C.J. Hauser.

Our final event on April 3 will showcase a unique theatrical experience with Asheville’s The Magnetic Theatre. The Magnetic Theatre seeks to connect Asheville audiences to original, artist-driven theatre. They support emerging local playwrights and produce exciting work that has not been seen in this region.

Join us for the 3rd Annual Lenten Arts Series sponsored by All Souls Cathedral Arts Commission.  All events will be held live in the sanctuary and live streamed via Facebook, YouTube, and our website beginning at 4 p.m. There is no admission fee, but donations are encouraged with all proceeds given to the artists. The series is sponsored by The Cathedral Arts Commission

No More Waiting Addresses Worker Struggles The Cathedral of All Souls hosts The Magnetic Theatre’s newest original work

No More Waiting is inspired by the struggles currently affecting our country’s workers, and created by the ensemble under the direction of Dakota Mann. The show features original vignettes devised and performed by Bill Chameides, Will Commerford, Christine Hellman, Dakota Mann, Daniel Sandoval, Kai Strange, Laura Walton, and Hannah Williams.

Learn about renewable energy and recycling at two virtual events with the Fairview Library.

Buncombe County’s Sustainability Officer, Jeremiah LeRoy, Doug Ager of Sugar Hollow Solar, Senator Julie Mayfield, and Director of GreenBuilt Alliance Sam Raurk will be joining us for an informative and interactive discussion on solar panels.

Learn about the library’s solar panel project as well as other interesting topics like how solar panels work, the policies that affect them, energy legislation passed at the state level, and affordable solar opportunities for BIPOC homeowners in Buncombe County. You will also have the opportunity to get your own questions answered. This program is free and everyone is invited.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad welcomes back The Bunny Hopper Express Easter Train April 15 & 16! This 4 and half-hour round trip special event train departs the historic Bryson City Depot at 10:30 am and will travel along the Nantahala Gorge River to our picturesque layover destination, for Easter-themed activities and Egg Hunt.

Passengers will be on the lookout for those train-hopping bunnies who have snuck on to take a free ride! Celebrate the glory of Easter with song, scripture and spiritual music as a spectacular sunrise ascends over Lake Lure. Chimney Rock’s nondenominational Easter Sunrise Service has become a legendary event in western North Carolina. The event is free but reservations are required.

The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness welcomes children of all ages to join the Young Families group hosting the annual Easter Egg Hunt at 10am on
Easter Sunday, April 17.

Have you ever thought about what happens to your recyclables after they leave the curb? Maybe were confused about why you can’t put everything with a recycling symbol in your blue bin? Have you ever wondered what the heck is up with composting?

Please join us as Casi Lohmeyer, Buncombe County’s Recycling Coordinator, presents a free program on all things recycling and composting in Buncombe County. Casi will talk about the general recycling process, what that looks like in Buncombe County specifically, why it’s important to recycle right, and recycling resources for your community. She will also explain the composting process, what composting opportunities there are in the County, and how to get materials to start your own composting program in your home, school or office. This program is free and everyone is invited.

May 30th is Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day- a time reserved to honor those who have fought and died for the freedoms we exercise. Many soldiers have paid for our liberties with their lives and it is our honor at Buncombe County Veterans Services to serve their families on Memorial Day and every day.

To serve our Veterans and their families better, we have added a new staff member to the Veterans Services Team. “We are fortunate to welcome Ivan Sarabia to our staff,” says Heath Smith, Director of Veterans Services for Buncombe County HHS. “His years of experience in Veterans Affairs and Patient Advocacy made him an exceptional choice for this role and we are proud to have him on our team.”

Ivan relocated to Buncombe County after establishing himself as an exceptional Veterans Services Officer and Patient Advocate in several states around the region. His motivation to serve the Veteran community is grounded in his personal military experience. Ivan is an Army Veteran with the 101st Airborne Division in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. He served as a Combat Engineer and served a tour in Afghanistan. “My time in the Army is something I look back on fondly and I’m thankful for the lifelong friendships and lessons I learned while serving,” Ivan says. “However, after leaving the military I faced many hurdles adjusting back to civilian life. Luckily, I was able to connect with other Veterans and healthcare providers at the VA who helped me navigate the benefits that were available to smooth that transition. These experiences fueled my desire and passion to pursue a career in which I could help fellow Veterans.”

Buncombe County is committed to honoring fallen soldiers, veterans, and their families and we want to make sure everyone in our community has a chance to honor them as well. Join the Buncombe Community in solidarity at the following events taking place in our county this Memorial Day.

Heath Smith, Veteran Services Director for Buncombe County Health and Human Services, is participating in the Memorial Day program for the Mayor’s Veterans Council. The event will take place on May 30, 2022, at 3 p.m. at Pack Square Park. The keynote speaker will be Spencer Ellis Hardaway, a retired Army Chaplain who received the Bronze Star and served in Iraq from 2009 to 2010.

Additionally, you can pay tribute to our heroes at the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. The sight of 5,700+ graves, each marked with an American flag, is striking and serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made to secure our rights. The Memorial Day service takes place at 10 AM on Monday, May 30.
