Asheville-born and Raleigh-Durham-based interdisciplinary artist Sherrill Roland’s socially driven practice draws upon his experience with wrongful incarceration for a crime he did not commit and seeks to open conversations about how we care for our communities and one another with compassion and understanding. Through sculpture, installation, and conceptual art, Roland engages visitors in dialogues around community, social contract, identity, biases, and other deeply human experiences. Comprised of artwork created from 2016 to the present, Sherrill Roland: Sugar, Water, Lemon Squeeze reflects on making something from nothing, lemonade from lemons, the best of a situation. A reference to a simple recipe from the artist’s childhood, the title also speaks to Roland’s employment of materials available to him while incarcerated, such as Kool-Aid and mail from family members. In the face of his personal experiences, he invites viewers to confront their own uncomfortable complicity in perpetuating injustice. Roland’s work humanizes these difficult topics and creates a space for communication and envisioning a better future. This exhibition is organized by the Asheville Art Museum and curated by Hilary Schroeder, assistant curator, in collaboration with the Artist. This exhibition is funded, in part, by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

Music Movie Mondays Series:
Concert for George
Special one-night-only screening of the Grammy-winning concert film
followed by an interactive discussion moderated by music journalist Bill Kopp
George Harrison was sometimes referred to as “the quiet Beatle.”
Somewhat overshadowed by the immense songwriting of John Lennon
and Paul McCartney, his artistry might not have always received the
recognition it deserved. But Harrison – already the composer of classic
tracks like “Something” and “Here Comes the Sun” – blossomed as a
solo artist in the post-Beatles era. His 1970 triple album All Things Must
Pass is a landmark work. Along the way, Harrison developed deep and
lasting friendships with celebrated names in music, the arts,
entertainment and philanthropy.
In the wake of George’s untimely passing in 2002, an all-star group of those friends mounted a
concert in tribute to their friend. A film of that performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Concert for
George won a Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video.
In commemoration of the 20 th anniversary of the tribute event, a limited-engagement screening of
Concert for George is being scheduled in select theaters. Asheville’s Grail Moviehouse is hosting
Concert for George one night only: January 9, 2023. It’s the latest installment of the Music Movie
Mondays series hosted by author and music journalist Bill Kopp. Sponsored by AshevilleFM, the
event will include a brief introduction, a screening of the film, and an interactive discussion
immediately following.

“On November 29, 2002, one year after his passing, Olivia Harrison and Eric Clapton
organized a performance tribute to celebrate the life and music of George Harrison. Held
at London’s Royal Albert Hall, the momentous evening featured George’s songs, and music
he loved, performed by artists including Eric Clapton, Joe Brown, Dhani Harrison, Jools
Holland, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Monty Python, Tom Petty, Billy Preston, Ravi &
Anoushka Shankar, Ringo Starr and more.”
Hosted by Asheville-based author and music journalist Bill Kopp, Grail Moviehouse presents a special

screening of Concert for George on Monday,
Jan. 9 @ 7pm and sponsored by
AshevilleFM. After a brief introduction, we’ll watch the film together. And then afterward,
we’ll engage in a moderated discussion about George Harrison and the
Concert for George in his honor.
The event is the second and latest in the series of Music Movie Mondays at
Grail Moviehouse. We’ll watch and discuss new releases, classics and cult
favorites.

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Geoff Tate is best known for his 30-plus years as the creative and driving force behind the progressive metal band Queensryche. Tate is regarded as one of the most skilled vocalists in the genre with hundreds of modern, popular artists citing him and his former band as a major influence. Since Queensryche’s inception with Tate at the helm, the band has sold over 20 million albums worldwide, received four Grammy nominations, had their music featured in three feature films, and played to sold-out audiences the world over.

Combining social consciousness and expertly crafted lyrics with high-energy, melodically complex music, Queensryche became internationally recognized as the thinking man’s rock band. The group’s first three albums met their critical acclaim, with their landmark concept album Operation: Mindcrime reaching RIAA Platinum success. Their follow-up album Empire featured the wildly popular single “Silent Lucidity,” which Tate and the band performed live at the 34th Annual Grammy Awards® alongside a supporting orchestra.

At the end of 2012, Tate released Kings & Thieves, his first solo album in over a decade. Two years later, Tate and his bandmates reunited for a farewell tour as Queensryche before announcing that the band would change its name to Operation: Mindcrime for future tours and recordings. Tate began working on his most ambitious works to date at the end of 2014 – a trilogy of entirely new concept albums that have all been followed up with extensive international tours.

The City of Asheville’s Community and Economic Development Department is now accepting applications for CDBG and HOME grant funds, and for the Housing Trust Fund (HTF) for fiscal year 2023-24.

The Community and Economic Development Department manages and administers programs for Asheville and for a four-county consortium, consisting of Buncombe, Henderson, Transylvania and Madison Counties, that provide affordable housing, economic opportunities and other benefits for low-income residents.

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and the HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME) are federal grant programs through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) which provide grant funds for eligible projects to create affordable housing for low-income households and support community development activities to build stronger and more resilient communities.

The City of Asheville’s Housing Trust Fund was created in 2000 to provide a source of local funding to assist in the development of affordable housing in Asheville. Assistance is available in the form of repayable loans at a low rate of interest.

 Right now, a team of doctors is scrubbing in for a surgery while a patient waits for a procedure that they hope will save their life; blood bags are prepared and ready.  In a different hospital, a team of nurses is giving a trauma victim a lifesaving blood transfusion.  Several floors away, a cancer patient is receiving a platelet transfusion after chemotherapy.  Those patients, and thousands of others, can hope and plan for the new year because blood products were available.

As we enter 2023, many are looking at a piece of paper, writing down their new year’s resolutions and goals: ‘read ten books…get outside more often…go to the gym.’ The Blood Connection (TBC), the non-profit community blood center, is encouraging people to add one more thing to that list: save a life with TBC. It may sound daunting.  It may sound unachievable.  But with just one hour and one blood donation, three lives can be saved in this community. The difference between a joyous and tragic new year for many local families is community blood donors.

TBC is urging community members to make blood donation a priority in 2023 – because, simply put: lives depend on it.

Are you fungi-curious? In this class students will learn basic fungal biology, discover the top wild mushrooms to collect in the forest, even get pointers on how to grow mushrooms at home!

We are seeking volunteers to assist us in our small after school program for children in West Asheville in low-income housing.  We provide a safe and nourishing environment, healthy snacks, and creative activities.  Our program currently meets during the school year on most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00-5:00pm. You may volunteer for one or two days a week. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Assist with serving snacks
• Interact with children during activity time
• Supervise games and outdoor free time
• For people with background in education, there is also an opportunity to assist with curriculum development and program planning and administration

Requirements:

• Background check
• Orientation booklets will be provided
• Masks are required if unvaccinated

Join us for a Ribbon Cutting at Literacy Connection, formally known as Blue Ridge Literacy Council. We will be celebrating the the new name and logo, as well as a tour of the facility with light refreshments and drinks! Literacy Connection serves to develop literacy skills that promote economic and social success!

Great news for poets and poetry lovers: Dark City Poet’s Society is returning to the Black Mountain Library. DCPS is a completely free poetry group that is open to poets of all ages and experience levels. White Horse’s legendary Open Mic takes place each and every Tuesday at 7pm.

You’ll hear a variety of wonderfully talented folks on their way up. You never know what you’ll hear… original songs, covers, guitar, piano….. and often something quite surprising.

The signup sheet is placed on the bar at 6:30 and the first ten to sign in are the performers for the evening. Each gets 15 minutes or three songs.

It’s a lot of fun… especially since it’s FREE !!!!!
