World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15th.  World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.

Help raise awareness and prevent elder abuse by participating in the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Walk on Thursday, June 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Carrier Park in Asheville.

Buncombe County Health and Human Services, specifically the Elder Justice Coalition, is partnering with several agencies, such as Land of Sky Regional Council, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Council on Aging of Buncombe County, the North Carolina State Employees’ Credit Union, and Van Winkle Law Firm to host the 2023 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Walk on Thursday, June 15, from 5 pm to 7 pm at Carrier Park.  This multi-generational event is free to all and will include information about elder abuse, its impacts on our community, and information from local agencies that offer actions and support to combat elder abuse.  The event will feature live music from the Knotty G’s, desserts available to purchase from Howdy Homemade Ice Cream and Small Cakes, and face painting for the kids.

Sip and stroll through the Arboretum’s gardens in the glow of the golden hour, all while listening to live music from a variety of local and regional artists! ArborEvenings runs Thursdays and most Fridays through September 30, 2022 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

There is no additional cost to attend ArborEvenings beyond our standard parking fee. As always, Arboretum Society members and their accompanying guests can enter for FREE (guests must be in member vehicles to receive free entry). Proceeds from ArborEvenings help support the The North Carolina Arboretum Society and further advance the Arboretum’s mission.

Beer, Wine, and soft drinks will be for sale onsite at the Green Gardener’s Shed from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. each night of the event. Outside alcohol is strictly prohibited, but guests are welcome to bring in water or a favorite non-alcoholic beverage.

Food Available for Pre-Order, Picnics Welcome

Although the Bent Creek Bistro will not be open during the event, they will be offering their delicious dining options at ArborEvenings via pre-order! Simply place your online order — including alcoholic beverages — up until 11 a.m. on the date you plan to attend, then pick up your order at the Baker Information Desk between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. (In the event of rain cancellation, pre-orders will be fully refunded.)

Guests are welcome to bring in outside food and non-alcoholic beverages. However, outside alcohol is strictly prohibited.

We will meet virtually and in person monthly to discuss a book, so read the book and then join in the discussion in person or online every third Thursday. All are welcome! At the end of each meeting we will vote on the next book! The virtual club meeting will be in Zoom format and will meet 2.5 hours after the in-person meeting (8:00pm EST). All net proceeds from adult beverage sales will benefit the Friends of Downtown Hendersonville 501c3 nonprofit serving the Downtown Program, whose mission is to identify, preserve and enhance the key factors that contribute to the authentic small town urban character of historic downtown Hendersonville.

For this year’s Pritchard Park Songwriter Series, the Asheville Association is teaming up with Paloma Madre who are best known for bringing Asheville the wildly successful, international concept, Open Folk. Our jazz trio with Thommy Knoles on keys, Felix Pastorius on bass, and Paul Gladstone on drums will perform an opening set from about 7-8:15 pm.

An open jam session follows. Drop-ins are welcome and encouraged for a suggested donation of $10.

Aaron Naylor is a Chicago-based comedian from Kansas City. In 2013, he performed at his first open mic at Laff’s Comedy Caffe after moving to Tucson, AZ for a woman he barely liked.

Shortly after, he moved back to Kansas City and won the 2014 Local Comic Standing competition. He quickly became a Midwest favorite, placing 2nd in the 2016 Cleveland Comedy Festival, winning the 2017 Funniest Person in Wichita, and was a finalist on season 8 of Comcast’s Trial by Laughter.

Aaron has performed at some of the best comedy festivals in the country, including San Francisco Sketchfest, Limestone, Asheville, and 10,000 Laughs. He has also shared the stage with real comedians like Todd Barry, Sam Tallent, and Ron Funches. His comedy has been featured on Comedy Juice, Men’s Humor, and Someecards.

In 2021, Aaron was named the Funniest Person in Kansas City by KC Magazine, while also co-founding the Fountain City Comedy Festival. He tours across the country regularly, so if you’ve got some edibles, please give him some.
