Pulp Potential: Works in Handmade Paper
Jul 19 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Asheville Art Museum

Paul Wong, Carbon, silver and gold, 2016, pigmented linen and cotton pulp, publisher: Dieu Donné, New York, edition 3/25, 18 × 11 inches. Gift of Dieu Donné, New York, 2022.27.06. © Paul Wong.

On View March 8 through July 24, 2023
The Van Winkle Law Firm Gallery • Level 1

Paper is an essential part of the art-making process for many artists, serving as the base for drawing, painting, printmaking, and other forms of art. As a substrate, paper can vary in weight, absorbency, color, size, and other aspects. Since industrialization, paper has primarily been produced through mechanical means that allow for consistency and affordability.

What happens, then, when an artist chooses to return to the foundations of paper, wherein it is made by hand using pulps, fibers, and dyes that reflect the human element through variations, inconsistencies, flaws, and surprises? Certain artists have sought out these qualities and embraced them, making paper not just a support on which to work, but fully a medium in and of itself.

Pulp Potential: Works in Handmade Paper is organized by the Asheville Art Museum and curated by Hilary Schroeder, former assistant curator, with assistance from Alexis Meldrum, curatorial assistant. Special thanks to Dieu Donné, New York, NY.

The Art of Food: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation
Jul 19 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Asheville Art Museum

The Art of Food features works from important postwar artists, like Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, John Baldessari, Wayne Thiebaud, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Jasper Johns, alongside the work of contemporary artists, like Alison Saar, Lorna Simpson, Enrique Chagoya, Rachel Whiteread, and Jenny Holzer, among others.

The Art of Food features more than 100 works in mediums that include drawings, paintings, photographs, prints, sculptures, and ceramics by 37 artists.

Each artist has a unique means of depicting food in their work that, when seen alongside others, creates a nuanced representation of the complex place food holds in everyday life. Cross-historical resonances between artists in the exhibition spark novel meditations on food and its discontents, while speaking to a broad range of audiences.

Western North Carolina Glass: Selections from the Collection
Jul 19 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Asheville Art Museum

Western North Carolina is important in the history of American glass art. Several artists of the Studio Glass Movement came to the region, including its founder Harvey K. Littleton. Begun in 1962 in Wisconsin, it was a student of Littleton’s that first came to the area in 1965 and set up a glass studio at the Penland School of Craft in Penland, North Carolina. By 1967, Mark Peiser was the first glass artist resident at the school and taught many notable artists, like Jak Brewer in 1968 and Richard Ritter who came to study in 1971. By 1977, Littleton retired from teaching and moved to nearby Spruce Pine, North Carolina and set up a glass studio at his home.

Since that time, glass artists like Ken Carder, Rick and Valerie Beck, Shane Fero, and Yaffa Sikorsky and Jeff Todd—to name only a few—have flocked to the area to reside, collaborate, and teach, making it a significant place for experimentation and education in glass. The next generation of artists like Hayden Wilson and Alex Bernstein continue to create here. The Museum is dedicated to collecting American studio glass and within that umbrella, explores the work of Artists connected to Western North Carolina. Exhibitions, including Intersections of American Art, explore glass art in the context of American Art of the 20th and 21st centuries. A variety of techniques and a willingness to push boundaries of the medium can be seen in this selection of works from the Museum’s Collection.

PATIO: Sara Jean Kelley
Jul 19 @ 5:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

– ALL AGES
– LIMITED PATIO SEATING IS FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED

SARA JEAN KELLEY
A lover of wild things— plants, animals, people, and music— Nashville native Sara Jean Kelley crafts songs that combine upbeat, pop-inspired country hooks with thoughtful, often philosophical lyrical themes that explore our human connection to the natural world. Due to her dark sensibility and slightly melancholic sense of humor, Kelley’s particular brand of alternative country is multidimensional, with one foot firmly rooted in her Nashville Country/Americana background, another foot exploring the realms of alternative rock, rock and roll, pop, and even hip hop influences. Her voice, at times husky, dark and sultry, at times floating light-as-a-feather, has been compared to celebrated female country stars Brandi Carlisle, Patti Griffin, and Lucinda Williams. She’s opened for country music icons Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, and her songwriting reveals a clear, intuitive understanding of what makes a song work. Her latest EP Black Snake, is about life and death, transformation and rebirth, strength and resilience; all the things you experience in your early thirties that you wish you had known a decade earlier.

Wooey Wednesday
Jul 19 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Meet at Enter the Earth inside the Grove Arcade

Wooey Wednesday!
Like a Reiki Share, a networking group, a psychic fair pop up, and play time with friends had a baby.

Where? We meet in the Conference Room of the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville, which is 1 Page Avenue. You can meet at Enter the Earth, the crystal store upstairs, and we will walk you down at 6pm. :)

Hello Darlings!!

**Please unregister yourself, if you end up not being able to come. We had to turn some people away in June that wanted to attend, but couldn’t, because registered members didn’t show and didn’t un-register. Thanks!!

What is “Wooey”? “Wooey” means metaphysical, spiritual, visionary, Ashevilly, groovy, hippie, New Earth, nature/cosmic baby kinda stuff. Some people use the word “woo woo” to put people like us down. I have fully claimed the term “wooey” instead. It’s OUR word. Plus, it sounds like something you exclaim when you are having hella fun… ~Wooooooo Weeeeeeee~! Since we last were together, I’ve actually opened a business called “Wooey Momma” to offer resin encased crystal grids that I call Vortex Discs. If you have any interest, you can see what I’m up to at wooeymomma.com.

What is Wooey Wednesday? WW is a time and space to chill out with other members of your local tribe, to meet new people, hear about new things, do “show and tell”, check out what everyone is into, and mostly… to play, have fun, and create community.

We have not met for a Wooey Wednesday since before Covid, but we are going to get it all going again so that we can reconnect with our friends and community. We have missed you all!

As you may recall, Wooey Wednesday flows from introductions, where everyone gets 2 minutes to tell us who they are, what they do, what they are looking for, or what they offer. Then we play, talk, enjoy, do wooey stuff, and have general fun and mayhem. :) We do time the introductions so that it is fair for everyone and that we can get to play time!

Do you make something? Bring it! If someone wants to buy it, groovy! Only bring enough to sit immediately in front of you though. Whatever you got… as long as it’s suitable for gentle folk to witness, ~is legal~, and be something that group members might enjoy. Any $ transactions are your business.

Do you make something that you want people to sample? Chocolate? Hot sauce? Tinctures? Hand cream? Are you trying to get people to know about whatever cool goodness you create that is consumable? Bring all the things you need to offer samples, and make sure you clean up after yourself, but otherwise… heck yeah, I want a taste or a smear…. or a whiff! I double invite you if you make chocolate!

Do you have an event you are facilitating in the near future and want to share it with others? Bring your literature, cards, and tell us about it with your 2 minute introduction!

Do you have a service you provide that you can share easily in 15 minute (or so) sessions? We’ve had astrologers, tarot card readers, Reiki practitioners, Sound Healers, Monochords, Pyramids, selenite benches, Heart Clearings, Fairy Hair, massage therapists, and so on… who have done mini sessions, sometimes for a love donation, sometimes for a set small fee. Just let people know what you consider fair when you introduce yourself. You can choose to do freebies. All of that is your business.

Do you have a specialty or a funky cool knowledge base you’d like to share or a business that is a service you want people to know about?
Tell us about it! In your 2 minute intro you can tell us what you’re into and see if there are any other lovers of whatever you love out there. Kindred!

Do you like rocks? Seriously, we are super rock geeks. Christopher Lee Matthews (my metaphysical co-worker and friend) often creates ridiculously potent group meditation sized crystal grids that he then uses to magnify sound healing work. If y’all know him, you know that it’s worth it to just show up for that. It’s never promised. He sometimes can’t do it, but when he does… it’s faaaaaaaantastic.

I recommend bringing some kind of water bottle or tincture bottle to WW because we often do buzzy water things with Christopher’s grid/sound events, and if you have something to put it in, you can take it home with you.

Come on by and get your WOO on. :) All ages. Everyone is welcome. ~Please register to make sure we don’t make the Fire Marshal mad.~

Jul 19 @ 7:30 pm
Parker Concert Hall at Brevard Music Center

The Brahms G minor Piano Quartet is a relatively early chamber work, yet embodies an outsized orchestral scope of range, expression, and color. Throughout the piece Brahms refers obliquely to his beloved friend Clara Schumann, as well as to his favorite Hungarian melodies and rhythms. Indeed it was Clara Schumann herself who premiered the Quartet in Hamburg in 1861.
