Women, Wine & Wellness Weekend will feature something for every wine lover, with proceeds benefiting our Women Helping Women initiative. For 26 years, Women Helping Women has provided financial assistance to women facing a cancer diagnosis. Funds help cover the costs of mammograms, lab tests, scans and other cancer-related care.

Wine & Wellness Weekend at Stone Ashe

We are excited to partner with Stone Ashe Vineyards in Hendersonville, NC for a weekend of wine and wellness-related events to raise important funds for our Women Helping Women (WHW) initiative at the Pardee Hospital Foundation. Founded 26 years ago, WHW provides supplementary support for women who require necessary medical treatment for the prevention and treatment of cancer but cannot shoulder the costs.

Support from each event throughout the course of the Wine & Wellness Weekend will provide ease to women right here in our community, and we hope you will join us!

Finding our authentic professional path can take many turns, and the task of embracing our authentic selves is ever unfolding. In this WomanUP Workshop, you’ll find encouragement and inspiration in the stories from three successful, local business women: Leah Wong Ashburn (Highland Brewing Company), Sandar Leung (Manna FoodBank) and Molly Gaffney-Keebler (Spherion Staffing & Recruiting). They’ll share the twists and turns of their on-going journeys to discovering their authentic selves through life, family and career.

About our speakers:

Leah Wong Ashburn is the second-generation family owner of Highland Brewing Company and serves as President and CEO. She has served on several boards including the Asheville Chamber, Buncombe County TDA, Riverlink and A-B Tech and currently serves on the UNC Board of Visitors and the NC Brewers Guild. She is also recipient of the 2019 WomanUP Woman Executive of the Year Award.

Sandar Leung is Director of Operations at MANNA FoodBank. Prior to her role at MANNA, she served as Senior Manager of Fabrication Value Stream at Thermo Fisher Scientific where she was responsible for long-term capacity and technology strategy. She is also a Functional Board Member of the Asian Children’s Mission which advocates for the welfare and education of children in Myanmar.

Molly Gaffney-Keebler is the Spherion Staffing & Recruiting Licensed Franchisee for WNC and Tri-Cities, TN and is president of the Spherion Franchise Advisory Board. In her tenure at Spherion, she has won multiple awards including Rookie of the Year in 2017 and Franchisee of the Year in 2020. Spherion Asheville has been the fastest growing market in Spherion history.

“Empty Bowls” Benefitting Flat Rock Backpack Program

Local pottery artists are firing their kilns for the sixth year to help
hungry children in the greater Flat Rock area.  On Sunday, August 13, 2023, “Empty Bowls,”
a community meal benefiting the Flat Rock Backpack Program, will take place inside the
Parish Hall at the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness, 1905 Greenville Highway.

Advance tickets are recommended for the two seatings: 12:30pm-2:00pm and 5:00pm-
6:30pm. Each ticket includes one hand-crafted bowl (all donated by area potters) and a soup-
based meal (a variety of soups, breads and desserts). For those wishing to eat at home, take-
away is an available option.
Tickets are $25 per person or $50 for a family of two adults and children under 12. They are
available at St. John in the Wilderness Parish House Office, from Backpack team members or
at the door on the day of the event. For more information, call 828-693-9783. Credit cards are
accepted; checks should be made out to SJIW, noting Empty Bowls.
Please join us for this fun community event. Donations are gratefully accepted throughout the
year.  The Flat Rock Backpack Program has 501c-3 status. 100% of the money collected goes
to feeding the children.

Join us at the historic Monte Vista Hotel in Black Mountain, NC on Saturday, August 26, as the Friends of the Black Mountain Library embarks on a new adventure. We will be participating as a vendor at the Swannanoa Valley Museum Antique Sale! The sale is the first of its kind for our Museum and we are proud to be a part of it. We will be selling vintage and antique books that have been donated to the FOL over the last few years, including vintage multi-volume sets like The Wit and Humor of America, a 10-volume set from 1890. Many first edition books will be offered, some signed by the author, and some hard to find books, like the 1968 paperback Save Me the Waltz by Zelda Fitzgerald. There are also yearbooks from Spartanburg colleges from the early 1930s. Everything is individually priced with several books priced at just $10.00. 2023 Chamber Classic Golf Tournament

The 2023 Chamber Classic Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday, August 29, at The Omni Grove Park Inn.

This event is always a fun opportunity for members of the business community to connect with colleagues and enjoy a beautiful day out of the office.

This Captain’s Choice tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 am (one flight only). Sponsors will engage golfers with fun interaction and branded prizes at select holes on the course.

Entry fee includes breakfast provided by Bojangles of WNC, a delicious, hearty lunch catered by Bear’s Smokehouse Asheville. Two beverage stations will be set up on the course, with beer provided by Highland Brewing Company and soft drinks from Pepsi-Cola.

Registration fee is $225 per individual or $900 for a team of four players.
