Romare Bearden (Charlotte, NC 1911–1988 New York, NY), African American writer and artist, is renowned for his collages. He constantly experimented with various techniques to achieve his artistic goals throughout his career. This exhibition highlights works on paper and explores his most frequently used mediums, including screen-printing, lithography, hand-colored etching, collagraph, monotype, relief print, photomontage, and collage.

Bearden’s work reflects his improvisational approach to his practice. He considered his process akin to that of jazz and blues composers. Starting with an open mind, he would let an idea evolve spontaneously.

“Romare Bearden: Ways of Working highlights Bearden’s unique artistic practice and masterful storytelling through art,” says Pamela L. Myers, Executive Director of the Asheville Art Museum. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Jerald Melberg Gallery to present these extraordinary works on paper in conversation with Bearden’s collage Sunset Express, 1984 in the Museum Collection (on view in the Museum’s SECU Collection Hall). This exhibition will also provide a glimpse into the cultural histories and personal interests that influenced his art-making practice, and we hope it encourages introspection and dialogue with our visitors.”

Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats, but the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka’s rules in the factory — or suffer the consequences. Featuring the enchanting songs from the 1971 film, in addition to a host of fun new songs, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR. is a scrumdidilyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone’s sweet tooth.

The Day of the Dead in Mexico is a holiday with complex Mayan and Aztec roots combined with Catholic and native customs that joyfully memorializes the dead ancestors. It is celebrated throughout the day and night. November 1st and 2nd. It is a very festive time when beloved family members, children, friends and even pets from the afterlife return to the land of living and are reunited with the living. Although close to Halloween, the Day of the Dead in Mexico is a colorful and joyful celebration welcoming the souls to be with the living.

Entertainment
Asheville is fortunate to have a local WNC Mexican organized cultural youth organization from the Emma area of West Asheville. The name of this performance troupe is Raices. Raices’ mission is to strengthen the cultural indigenous identity and traditions of US born children of Mexican descent, particularly of Hidalgo, Mexico. This area of Mexico is strongly represented in Asheville. These indigenous traditions and language of Otomi are slowly getting lost on their children growing up in modern American culture.
Therefore, Raices’ goal is to bring a positive influence in their children’s lives through the dance, art, and culture of Latin America. Composed of twenty 12–22-year-old youth, they will grace our Day of Dead fundraiser event in person with vibrant costumes and traditional Chiapan and Sinaloan dances.

Join us at the Peace Center on Sunday, October 29 at 5pm for the Carolina Youth Symphony Fall Concert as Maestro Simón Gollo takes the podium in his inaugural concert as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra. The concert will feature members of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra side-by-side with the Symphony Orchestra as they perform Edward Elgar’s “Nimrod” from Enigma Variations and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Fantasy Overture” from Romeo and Juliet. The concert will also feature the Concert Orchestra, conducted by Mr. James F. Kilgus, and the Repertory Orchestra, conducted by Mrs. Ginger R. Greer, performing selections by Brahms, Daniels, Delibes, Mahler, and Rossini.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors and may be purchased through the Peace Center box office.

I would like to add my two cents to the reviews you’ve received so far regarding your new location and what it offers the horror fans when they visit the Graveyard. You have improved your haunt by miles. Yes, outdoors is unique and fun. But what you offer here is a chance to re-live scenes out of some of the best horror films ever made such as Nightmare On Elm Street with Freddy in person and Jason at Crystal Lake. You will not be disappointed when you make the trip to Canton to see for yourself. What the visiting folks don’t know is how much you put into making this new indoor haunt and what was developed in a very short time. The scenes you created like the Michael Myers house and the Pennywise scene is out of sight! I just viewed that scene clearly depicted to a “T”. It is truly a great place to visit. Congratulations to all of the cast that made it special. Especially the Michael Myers scene….after all, I know it well. Can’t wait to come back!
