RANGER is a true tale of war seen through the lens of a Special Operations soldier, Sgt. David Waterhouse, in Iraq and Afghanistan. This first-hand account documents the brutality of combat and the raw nature of killing and death. It’s a journey of innocence lost, and the scars of war etched into the minds of service members. An untold account everyone should hear.

The Ranger Creed states that, “I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than other soldier.”

After the release of RANGER, Further Faster Harder Foundation was created to give veterans a platform to tell their stories and find their purpose and voice again through documentaries, books, art, podcasts, and many other avenues.

Friday, June 28^th marks the 19-year anniversary of the largest loss of Special Operations life since the Vietnam War. This event honors the memories of the 19 men who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

We want to welcome everyone to join us in our First Charity Screening and Silent Auction to help give Voices to Vets.

All Month Long in June at the Swannanoa Library

Join us at the Swannanoa Library to create a collage mosaic Juneteenth Flag. While communally creating this flag, learn the history and meaning of this flag and all that it represents.  This program will continue for entire month of June where the community can add to it over time. All ages are welcome to contribute.

Buncombe County Parks & Recreation’s annual firework display is returning to Lake Julian Park, and will be taking place on June 29, 2024. Buncombe County residents, families, friends, and neighbors are invited to experience the dazzling firework show on lawn chairs and blankets. The fireworks are scheduled to begin just after dark. It is recommended to arrive earlier to allow ample time to park and board the shuttle. Lake Julian Park is located at 37 Lake Julian Road in Arden.?

Guests are encouraged to arrive early to delight in the delicious food-truck lineup. Food trucks will be at the park from 2 to 9 p.m. There will also be an activity station where cornhole bags and horseshoes can be checked out. Disc golf and fishing will be open on the backside of the park closest to Hendersonville Road (56 Fisherman’s Trail). Please note that boat launching is not available on the backside of Lake Julian Park.

Parking on June 29 is restricted to Estes Elementary School (275 Overlook Road, Asheville). Those with a valid handicap placard can park at Lake Julian Park. There will be a shuttle transporting guests from the Estes Elementary School parking lot to Lake Julian Park from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.??

There will be one accessible boat launch at Lake Julian on June 29. Guests are allowed to bring their own boats to launch on this day. We will also be renting paddle boats. All boats must be off the water by 8 p.m. All picnic shelters will be available on a first come, first served basis.??

Before You Go:? 

• Parking will be located at Estes Elementary. There will be a shuttle transporting guests to Lake Julian from this parking lot only. Only vehicles with a valid handicap placard, or those who are boat launching may park at Lake Julian Park. Limited parking is also available in the gravel lot next to Wild Wing Cafe.
• Alcohol and tobacco products are prohibited on the grounds at Lake Julian Park.?Pets are not recommended.
• Be sure to bring a blanket or lawn chair to relax around the lake.

In 2014, a group of Vietnam combat veterans began meeting at the Charles George VA Hospital in Asheville to participate in a unique creative writing program. The focus was capturing their stories through essays and poetry to find the voices war had taken from them. The hope was to reclaim a sense of their shared humanity, build camaraderie and find some degree of healing.

To continue this work, the NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation will be offering free creative writing classes at the East Asheville Library in June and July. The goal is to provide healing through the art of creative writing to all veterans in our community.

This Fourth of July, the Asheville Downtown Association and the City of Asheville are excited to invite you to the Independence Day Block Party, presented by Ingles. We are thrilled to announce that this year’s free event is moving to the vibrant South Slope area, specifically on Coxe Avenue and Buxton Avenue in Downtown Asheville. The festivities kick off at noon with a thrilling performance by the Ultimate Airdogs, alongside a variety of local food and beverage vendors where delicious treats will be available for purchase throughout the day. Additionally, a number of local marketplace vendors will be present, offering unique goods and crafts that showcase the best of Asheville’s vibrant community. The entire South Slope neighborhood is participating, ensuring an exciting day filled with kids’ activities, live music, and engaging activations for all ages. The Rock Academy will provide musical entertainment during the early part of the day, setting the perfect mood for a celebration of independence and community spirit. At 4:00 PM, the main stage opens with Asheville’s very own Secret Agent 23 Skidoo as the emcee, followed by performances from DJ Badonkey Kong and The Legendary Tuesday Night Funk Jam House Band. The night will feature a headline performance by The Pink Stones. Don’t miss the grand finale – a dazzling fireworks display set to light up the night sky at 9:30 PM.
