Tracey Morgan Gallery is pleased to present “Barriers & Boundaries,” a solo exhibition by Sharon Louden showcasing three interrelated bodies of work — paintings from The Barriers series (2023), selections from the Untitled series (2010), and a new wall installation featuring works on paper from Louden’s ongoing and current series, Barriers to Entry (2023–25). Together, these series trace Louden’s evolving vision, revealing a rich dialogue between past and present, painting and installation.

Louden’s work investigates limits—both actual and psychological—and the space in which constraint becomes possibility. The Barriers paintings evoke edges, thresholds, and the complex interplay between openness and division. The Untitled series explores fragile architectural form, color, and gentle quietness in the gestures themselves. The wall installation in Barriers to Entry transforms one of the gallery’s walls into a site of engagement, inviting viewers to navigate, literally reflect, and imagine themselves in a new environment.

Get ready for another Blue Ridge Roller Derby Home Team Throwdown! The league’s three home teams — The Black Balsam Batties 🦇 The Swarm 🐝 and the Copperhead Outlaws 🐍 — will face off in a series of three thrilling 30-minute bouts on Sunday, November 9, at the Smoky Mountain Event Center in Waynesville.

Not just a byword of the Big Band era, swing is how jazz moves—on time and on purpose.

Jazz Is for Everyone is a series of five one-hour sessions exploring jazz music. Come to one or join them all—each session stands on its own and welcomes listeners at any level.

Jeremy Walker launched Jazz Is for Everyone in 2004 at his Brilliant Corners Jazz Club, with Wynton Marsalis serving as Artistic Advisor. The program was developed as an Educational Affiliate with Jazz at Lincoln Center. Since then, Walker’s been writing, composing, performing, producing, and speaking about why this music still matters.

Alabama Poets Garrett Ashley & Salaam Green to Headline Asheville Poetry Reading & Book Signing with Holiday Artisan Market

• Garrett Ashley – Author of A Field Guide to North American Trees (Good Printed Things / Loblolly Press, 2025) and Habitats (Loblolly Press, 2026). His limited-run chapbook features poems named after Southeastern trees, weaving ecological awareness with human transformation.
• Salaam Green – Birmingham’s first Poet Laureate (2024–2026), storyteller, and teaching artist. Her forthcoming collection The Other Revival (Pulley Press, Juneteenth 2025) excavates generational memory from the Wallace Plantation, uniting descendants of enslaved people and slaveholders through poetry as a tool for racial healing.

The North Carolina Writers Network West & The Brandy Bar + Cocktails present MILDRED KICONCO BARYA AND MACKENZIE NOZAKM as next in their series“ In the Company of Writers.”

This program offers a series of personal and conversational dialogues featuring guest writers/poets followed by an open mic forum. These inspirational gatherings will elucidate and entertain those attending. The guest author speaks from 7-8 PM with an open mic from 8 -9 PM. The Chicago blues music of Bob Sherrill welcomes you, continues during intermission, and closes the evening. Sign-ups for the open mic are available at the entrance to the reading room.

Mildred Kiconco Barya is a North Carolina-based writer and poet of East African descent. Winner of the 2025 Jacobs/Jones African American Literary Prize and the 2020 Linda Flowers Literary Award, she teaches and lectures globally and is the author of five full-length poetry collections, including The Animals of My Earth School (Terrapin Books), a 2024 Eric Hoffer Award Honorable Mention, and Brittle Paper Notable African Book of 2023. Her most recent collection is Hands in Clay (Serving House Books, 2025). Her prose, hybrids, and poems appear in the New England Review, The Cincinnati Review, Tin House, and elsewhere. Barya serves as a Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for the North Carolina Poetry Society and coordinates the Poetrio Reading events at Malaprop’s Independent Bookstore/Café.
