Wine and Wolves! Donate to Full Moon Farm Wolf Sanctuary
Nov 21 all-day
online w/ Full Moon Farm

Full Moon Farm is an organization dedicated to the well being of the wolfdog (wolf hybrid). Situated on 17 beautiful mountain acres in Black Mountain, NC, we operate as a federally recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization for abused and refused wolfdogs who find themselves in need of love, shelter, and care through no fault of their own.

Full Moon Farm provides a safe haven for animals that cannot be placed into homes for the rest of their lives.  Our rescued wolfdogs come from animal control agencies, closed breeding situations and occasionally, an owner in crisis.  We evaluate each animal upon intake and work with them at their level of comfort.

Some animals are “hands off” and we respect their choice, as well as that of the animals that crave human interaction.  Our goal is to enrich the lives of the residents, allowing them to reach their highest potential.  Your support by donation or sponsorship makes our task possible.

Though they may be abused or neglected, homeless because of death or divorce, they are all God’s Creatures and worthy of a lifetime of respect. We are here to serve them.

An evening of genre-blurring duets featuring pipa master Min Xiao-Fen and renowned percussionist River Guerguerian. Performing together for the first time, these internationally acclaimed musicians forge fresh pathways of cross-cultural expression by using traditional instruments to create exotic new sounds.

Few artists have done more to both honor and reinvent the 2000-year history of the pipa than soloist, vocalist and composer Min Xiao-Fen. Classically trained in her native China, Min was an in-demand interpreter of traditional music before relocating to the United States and forging a new path for her instrument alongside many of the leading lights in modern jazz, free improvisation, experimental and contemporary classical music. JazzTimes lauded her as “a pioneer in integrating her ancient instrument with modern jazz and improvised music.” while The New York Times raved that her singular work “has traversed a sweeping musical odyssey.”

Multi-percussionist, composer and educator River Guerguerian has been inspiring audiences with his colorful and innovative percussion for over thirty years. Whether collaborating with world-class artists, supporting symphonies or creating his own dynamic explorations of rhythm, River’s devotion and attention to the vibrant life of the drum reverberate with the listener.

River has performed internationally with such groups as the BBC Concert Orchestra, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Tan Dun, Tibetan Singing Bowl Ensemble, Lionel Hampton, Chuck Berry, Ziggy Marley, Talujon Percussion Quartet (co-founder), and his world jazz trio Free Planet Radio.

Come enjoy an evening of live music, food and drinks at Isis Music Hall. Advanced Reservations are highly recommended.

Since moving to Asheville in 2009, she’s been involved in the local jazz scene. Putting together a Joni Tribute has been a dream come true, and she is so grateful to have these stellar musicians involved in the project. Like someone told Joni once, “you need jazz musicians to play your music.”

Jason DeCristofaro/Piano and Vibraphone: Jason in an Instructor of Music at Warren Wilson College. He is a multi- instrumentalist and composer and holds a DMA from Boston University, an MM from UNC School Of The Arts, an MLAS from UNCA and a BM from Brevard College. West Asheville with her husband and cat.

Neil Hamburger
Nov 21 @ 9:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

For over 20 years, ‘America’s Funnyman’ Neil Hamburger has worked every imaginable stage, from New York’s Madison Square Garden and the UK’s Reading Festival, to a Hollywood cemetery, Tasmanian pubs, and an abandoned monkey cage in a decrepit Catskills zoo.

He has performed countless headlining American, Australian, British, and Canadian tours, as well as shows in Norway, New Zealand, Ireland, and the Bahamas. He has toured internationally as the cherry-picked opening act for Tenacious D and Faith No More.

Neil Hamburger was the subject of the critically acclaimed dramatic 2015 feature film Entertainment, co-starring John C. Reilly, Tye Sheridan, and Michael Cera. Neil’s many TV credits include Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Tom Green Live, and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Among his dozen album releases is Live at Third Man, produced by Jack White in Nashville; an earlier Hamburger effort was included in SPIN’s ‘40 Greatest Comedy Albums of All Time’. His latest LP, the chamber-pop epic Still Dwelling, features guest appearances from Jack Black and Mike Patton.

“A brilliantly awful persona of an old-school, C-list funnyman—the kind with an ill-fitting tuxedo and an enormous, greasy combover—on a very bad night. Neil Hamburger toys with an audience’s expectations (and patience), and indeed his act is a kind of rude commentary on stand-up comedy altogether.”—NEW YORK TIMES

Buncombe County Providers Now Offering Moderna, J+J, and Pfizer Booster Shots
Nov 22 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
The BCHHS COVID Vaccination Clinic

Update: Moderna and Johnson & Johnson Booster Vaccines Now Available

To strengthen and extend protections against severe illness, North Carolinians who have been fully vaccinated with the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines may now be eligible to receive a booster dose.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have authorized and recommended “booster” vaccine shots to provide continued protection.

Moderna: If you were vaccinated more than 6 months ago with the Moderna COVID-19 shot, boosters are now available for people:

  • 65 years or older,
  • 18 years or older who:
    • live or work in a nursing home or long-term care facility, have underlying medical conditions; or,
    • who work in high-risk settings like healthcare workers, teachers and childcare providers or food workers.
    • live or work in a place where many people live together (for example, homeless shelters, correctional facilities, migrant farm housing, dormitories or other group living settings in colleges or universities).

The Moderna booster is a smaller dose than what is given in the first two shots. Be sure to let your provider know you want the booster.

Johnson & Johnson: It is recommended that anyone 18 or older who was vaccinated more than 2 months ago with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine should get a booster dose.

Pfizer: Pfizer-BioNTech (COMIRNATY) booster shots continue to be available to anyone at high risk for serious illness or exposure, and who received their second dose at least six months ago.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has now authorized the distribution of Moderna and Johnson & Johnson boosters in addition to Pfizer COVID-19 boosters. Not all vaccines may be available at every vaccine location.

To find a COVID-19 booster visit MySpot.nc.gov to search vaccine locations near you. The BCHHS COVID Vaccination Clinic at 40 Coxe Avenue is open Monday – Friday, 9 am – 4 pm.

Additionally, individuals are now able to receive any brand of COVID-19 vaccine for their booster shot. Some people may have a preference for the vaccine type that they originally received and others may prefer to get a different booster. Limited preliminary evidence suggests that booster doses of one of the two mRNA vaccines—Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech—more effectively raise antibody levels than a booster dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. NCDHHS encourages you to speak with a doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you have questions about what booster is right for you.

Have questions about whether your personal medical conditions or job might make you eligible? Talk to a doctor, pharmacist or nurse about whether you should get a booster.

Read more in the NCDHHS press release here.

MANNA’s Turkey Drive
Nov 22 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
MANNA’s Volunteer Center

MANNA is continuing to serve more people than we were prior to the pandemic. For the enjoyment of the holiday season, it is important that those families are able to celebrate the holidays like everyone else. Since food is a centerpiece of every holiday, it is our hope that our community will come together to help fill as many plates of food over the holidays as we can throughout WNC.
MANNA hopes to collect hundreds of turkeys this year, and invites the community to join the effort by supporting the Turkey Drive. The community can give in two ways:
  • For your convenience, you can easily support our efforts to purchase additional holiday turkeys and hams through our virtual food drive option.
  • Donate a frozen turkey, ham, or other holiday table entrée to MANNA. Donations will be accepted at MANNA’s Volunteer Center (627 Swannanoa River Road, in East Asheville) Monday – Friday, between the hours of 9am–noon, and 1–3pm. (MANNA will be closed Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday.)
On behalf of MANNA and all those we serve together, we wish you and yours a joyful and healthy Thanksgiving holiday!
Pisgah Legal Services is helping local people sign up for Affordable Care Act health insurance
Nov 22 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Healthcare.gov is Open with Record-Low Premiums
New Savings Mean More People Qualify for Quality, Affordable Health Insurance

Free Help Is Available
Trained navigators are ready to help local people – at no cost – who would like help reviewing the plans and signing up. Make an appointment at pisgahlegal.org/aca or call (828) 210-3404.

Consumers enrolling in a plan on HealthCare.gov (for Spanish-speakers Cuidadodesalud.gov) are guaranteed to receive comprehensive coverage and cannot be denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions. All plans cover essential benefits, including doctor and hospital visits, prescription drugs, mental health treatment, and maternity care. In addition, consumers receive free preventive care services, such as immunizations and health screenings. Testing and treatment of COVID-19 are considered essential health benefits and are covered by all HealthCare.gov plans.

Consumers should avoid insurance plans offered outside of HealthCare.gov that seem too good to be true. “Junk insurance” products and short-term limited duration plans pose huge financial risks to consumers. These products can refuse to pay for care for pre-existing conditions, charge consumers more based on their gender, and impose annual coverage limits. HealthCare.gov is the only website where North Carolina consumers are guaranteed to get comprehensive coverage.

Pisgah Legal and other enrollment partners of WNC participating organizations give local people free, unbiased health insurance information and enrollment assistance in the NC Health Insurance Marketplace. These organizations include: Council on Aging of Buncombe County, Blue Ridge Community Health Services, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Mountain Projects, Inc., Western Carolina Medical Society, and Pisgah Legal Services. Pisgah Legal Services is a member of the North Carolina Navigators Consortium.

Since 1978, nonprofit Pisgah Legal Services has provided free civil legal aid to help people with low incomes seek justice and meet their basic needs including preventing homelessness, stopping domestic violence and securing health care. PLS provides a broad array of free legal services. Last year Pisgah Legal served more than 20,000 people across the mountain region.

PLS has offices in Asheville, Burnsville, Brevard, Hendersonville, Highlands/Cashiers, Marshall, Newland, Rutherfordton and Spruce Pine. Pisgah Legal employs staff attorneys and relies heavily on the pro bono legal services of approximately 300 volunteer attorneys.

Chris Simmons: UNCA Senior Recital

Chris Simmons is finishing up his senior year at UNCA in the BFA program for Jazz and Contemporary music. Some of his best playing and listening experiences have been at White Horse (most recently he played with Andrew Salow on his senior recital this past April 9th) and he plans to close out his undergrad career at a venue with such a warm atmosphere, helpful staff and fond memories attached to it.

He’s bringing a trio with himself playing drums, vibraphone and piano, as well as 2 UNCA alums: Clayton Gibb on guitar and Ray Damron on trumpet. You can expect to hear several standards, arrangements of lesser known compositions and a few originals of Chris’. Help White Horse send Chris off into the world in triumph!

Chris Renzema
Nov 22 @ 8:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

Chris Renzema, affectionately known as Renz to his friends, is the textbook definition of unassuming. With kind eyes and a soft-spoken voice, he’s immediately warm and friendly, at ease in himself in a quiet way that’s a little bit mystery, a little bit careful observer. While many artists have to work at giving off the same affable vibe, Renzema comes by it honest, which is perhaps the key to his simmering success.

After teaching himself to play guitar and write songs while in high school, Renzema got the opportunity to record some of his music at a hometown studio in Grand Rapids, MI. That first EP, Age to Age, quickly took on a life of its own as his song “You’re the Only One” was chosen for a feature in Worship Leader magazine. He followed up that EP by recording a full album, I’ll Be the Branches, which included “How to Be Yours” and “You’re the Only One,” both of which have racked up over 5 million streams. All of Renzema’s current success has happened without any radio play or major marketing campaigns. It’s been through organic word of mouth, person to person, exactly in line with who Renzema is, both as an artist and a person.
