Between interstates and county lines, life in rural Missouri unfolds in a progression of simple moments that carry the weight of every hard thing gone by. Parker and Melinda are searching for themselves in the hollows of their estranged marriage. Parker, haunted by the demons of addiction, lives every moment at the edge of an undiagnosed disorder — a darkness that steals his awareness and throws him into convulsions. Melinda, on an odyssey of her own, knows Parker’s struggles all too well, and as they try to help their teenage son come to terms with their lives apart, they have only their memories of a brighter life to get by.
Haunting and lyrical, Johnson’s powerful debut is a hymn to the lives we overlook in the quiet places around us. And how close we are to living them ourselves.
Will Johnson is a musician and songwriter who has played in the bands Centro-matic, South San Gabriel, Marie/Lepanto, Overseas, New Multitudes, and Monsters of Folk. He also releases records under his own name, and makes paintings centering on the subject of baseball and its history. His work has appeared in American Short Fiction. He was born in Kennett, Missouri, and currently lives in Austin, Texas. If or When I Call is his first novel.

Auditions held atThe Autumn Players will be performing a readers theater program of two delightful one-act comedies this summer at Attic Salt Theatre (while ACT is closed). The program is called Love, Marriage and the Irish!: Two Comic One-Acts by JM Barrie and George Bernard Shaw. Fireworks fly in the drawing room as an unexpected visitor sends Harry Sims Into a tailspin on the day before he is to be knighted in JM Barrie’s delightful play The Twelve Pound Look. And George Bernard Shaw infuses comedy into the terrible experience of war in O’Flaherty, V.C. as he depicts an Irish soldier trying to come to terms with what it means to be a hero. The Twelve Pound Look will be directed by Jim Reid and O’Flaherty, V.C. will be directed by Ellen Pappas. The plays will be performed as reader’s theatre. All are welcome to audition! |

VIDEO AUDTIONS: If unable to attend in person, you may submit a video application HERE. Applications are due by Tuesday, August 3 at 10:00pm. Please prepare this Wadsworth monologue. Actors are welcome to perform a piece of their own choosing in addition, however the Wadsworth monologue must be included in their video submission for consideration.
PRODUCTION DATES: October 15-November 7, 2021; Performances Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm, Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Cast must plan to arrive at least 1 hour prior to show time.
REHEARSALS: Rehearsals begin August 16, 2021; full rehearsal calendar available at auditions – you are able to list any conflicts you have with the rehearsal schedule at this time. Tech Week will take place over two weeks; casts are expected to attend October 3-7 AND either October 12-14 or October 19-21.
DIRECTOR SEEKS: 11 actors; Actors of any gender identity, race or ethnicity will be considered for any desired role indicated on their audition sheet. All roles will be presented as they are gendered in the script.

Join our supportive circle of poets. Whether you want to share a favorite work by a poet, get critiques of your own work, or cheer one another on, this is the group for you! Weather permitting, we’ll meet outdoors on the library lawn, so bring a blanket or chair.

Join us the 4th Wednesday evening of the month throughout the summer at Lake Julian picnic shelter #1 to hear stories from the Veterans writing group, Brothers & Sisters Like These. This program welcomes everyone and is for combat veterans, their friends, and family to listen to and share stories through the arts and creative writing to help heal from wartime experiences. Arrive a little early, between 5-6 to socialize, eat some good food, and learn what resources are available in Buncombe County for veterans and their families. Some of our readers will be Vietnam, Iraqi & Desert Storm Veterans. Please join us for an intimate evening. All are welcome to listen and to share stories of your own or ask questions after the readings. Picnic tables and some seating is available, but feel free to bring your own chairs. In the case of rain only, the shelter is covered. For afternoon thunderstorms with lightning, the program will be cancelled and a new date will be posted. Director Elliot Weiner seeks a cast of 7 for the Readers Theatre Showcase series production of The Outsider. This production will be performed as readers theatre – no script memorization required! – and will have two performances on the Mainstage and one at the Reuter Center at UNCA.
No previous experience required!

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel during the thirty days of November. Now, each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand-new novel.
If you are doing NaNoWriMo this year, the Buncombe County Public Library wants to support you in your endeavors.
