The 10th Annual Haunted Trail at The Adventure Center of Asheville

The Adventure Center of Asheville is excited to host the 10th annual Haunted Trail, Asheville’s only family friendly haunt! This event is ideal for Halloween lovers of all ages, 3-12 being the suggested age range. This is the third year in a row the Adventure Center has hosted this one of a kind live outdoor theatrical experience where guests are promised an entirely immersive and interactive spooky night out while also ensuring no contact. Every year the show is loved by boils and ghouls from all over WNC and we hope to see you there! For younger guests who still aren’t sure about being scared, even for fun, a “Sweet Peek Tour’ is offered nightly at 6:45 pm. The trail is actor free at this time and they can decide if they would like to re enter the line and receive the full show. The Treetop Adventure Park Aerial Glow Trail is also available for guests 4 years or older to enjoy at this event! Climb on two of our aerial trails while they are illuminated with thousands of colorful twinkle and laser lights. If you want to enjoy both of these amazing activities, combo passes are available and WILL sell out, so make sure you reserve your tickets early! *The Haunted Trail does not sell out, however the entrance closes at 9 pm. Don’t miss PIRATES COVE! Featuring a 30 ft Pirate Ship Escape Room- Test ‘yer wit mateys! 10 voyages available nightly for purchase (groups of up to 6 per voyage) Live Mermaid Encounter with photo opportunity. Pirate activities including a walk the plank obstacle course and shark feeding In addition to the Haunted & Aerial Glow Trails and Pirates Cove, there will be a giant festival tent with several local vendors, delicious Mellow Mushroom Pizza and more! Ticket sales to this event raise meals for MANNA food bank, come have fun and help us say BOO! to hunger!

This raffle is a fundraising event, and all net proceeds benefit the Brevard Music Center (BMC). Brevard Music Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. EIN# 56-0729350

DRAWING

The drawing will take place on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 3:00pm EDT. All mail, phone, and internet orders must be received by 11:59pm EDT on Monday, November 14, 2022.

TICKETS

The cost to purchase a single entry (“Ticket”) for the Raffle is $125 (U.S. Funds only) and is not tax deductible.

DETAILS

  1. By entering this raffle, entrants accept and agree to be bound by all the rules, limitations and restrictions set forth here and that their names and/or likenesses may be disclosed to and used by the news media and may otherwise be used by BMC for publicity purposes.
  2. The winner may choose a new 2022 Volvo, Subaru, or Hyundai prize vehicle from Hunter Automotive Group of Fletcher, NC with an MSRP up to $50,000.
  3. Vehicle choice will be subject to the current available inventory of the dealer. BMC reserves the right to substitute a Volvo, Subaru, or Hyundai model of equal value.
  4. The winner is responsible for all taxes, delivery costs, dealer fees, and any options he or she may choose above the vehicle’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) greater than $50,000.
  5. The gross winnings of the raffle will be reported to the federal and state tax authorities at the MSRP and the winner is responsible for income tax withholding prior to taking title to the prize.
  6. Individuals may purchase as many tickets as they wish; however, only 1,500 tickets will be sold.
  7. Participants must be 18 years old or older.
  8. BMC employees, faculty, and students 18 or older are eligible to participate.
  9. Winnings are not redeemable for cash.
  10. If a minimum of 600 tickets is not sold, all ticket holders will receive a full refund and the raffle will not occur.
  11. BMC does not make or provide any representation, guarantee or warranty, expressed or implied, in connection with the car and accepts no liability or responsibility regarding the construction or condition of the car.

WINNINGS

Once the winner has selected a prize vehicle, the Dealer will notify BMC of the award vehicle’s MSRP. BMC will calculate the required federal income taxes due. The raffle winner is responsible for remitting the funds to BMC for the federal income tax. Brevard Music Center is required by law to report the base MSRP of the vehicle the winner chooses as gaming income to federal and state authorities and to withhold and deposit federal income taxes equal to 25% of the MSRP less the wager (raffle ticket). The winner’s payment of the federal taxes to BMC will be deposited with the US Federal Treasury and the winner will receive credit for the taxes remitted. In order for the dealer to release the winner’s vehicle, the winner will need to provide the following to BMC:

  1. A completed form W-9.
  2. Payment to BMC of the appropriate amount of federal tax withholding in cash or certified check.

Once both of these are received, BMC will authorize the dealer to release the vehicle. The winner will receive a Form W-2G by January 31, 2023 to use in preparing their 2022 income tax return.

Write Your Novel at the Library with NaNoWriMo

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel during the thirty days of November. Now, each year on Nov. 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand-new novel.

If you are doing NaNoWriMo this year, the Buncombe County Public Library wants to support you in your endeavors! Join us for the following events throughout the month to keep you invigorated and motivated. All events are free, but online events require registration.     Denise Kiernan at the Wedge: Join New York Times bestselling author Denise Kiernan for a NaNoWriMo event at the Wedge Brewery. Denise’s cohost for this event will be her husband, author and editor Joseph D’Agnese. This free event is sponsored by Buncombe County Public Libraries and Malaprops bookstore.
  • Saturday, Nov. 19 from 1-4 p.m.
    Read Local, Write Local Author’s Fair: Connect with local authors and readers at the first-ever Write Local, Read Local Author Fair at the Black Mountain Library! Join authors and illustrators as they talk about their books and writing, sell copies of their work, and get to know the readers living in their community. Writers will be selling copies of their books and we will also have books available for checkout. Cash only for author sales, please.

State of the Arts Brunch

The Orange Peel

Local artists and arts advocates can now reserve tickets ($45) for the inaugural 2022 State of the Arts Brunch, taking place Wednesday, November 2 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. at The Orange Peel in downtown Asheville. Organized by the Asheville Area Arts Council, the brunch provides a critical snapshot of the current state of our creative sector. It also connects all members of the arts community, no matter their medium or method of participation, through celebration, education, and activation.

The brunch offers not only the opportunity to connect with area artists, but also to learn and share information essential to sustaining a thriving arts community. Asheville Area Arts Council  Executive Director Katie Cornell will share the State of the Arts update – a report on the present and future of the arts in Asheville and Buncombe County. The update will highlight topics including overall creative jobs and industry sales for 2022, the Buncombe County Creative Jobs pandemic report, a creative manufacturing study co-developed by the Arts Council  with Land of Sky and Riverbird Research, and more.

The Arts Council will also share a not-to-be-missed announcement that will shape the future of the arts in Asheville, including several exciting new contributions the organization  will make to the local arts community.

Additionally, featured speakers Mayor Esther Manheimer and Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Chair Brownie Newman will share remarks about how the City and County support arts and culture.

John Ellis, longtime arts advocate and former Executive Director of the Diana Wortham Theatre, now the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts, will be presented with the John Cram Arts Leadership Award (the “Crammy”), honoring his contribution to the arts in Asheville. Ellis will also announce his choice of local arts-based nonprofit organization or community project to receive an arts council grant of $1,000.

Attendees will enjoy a hearty, family-style brunch spread courtesy of 67 Biltmore, hosted in the spacious, lively Orange Peel (101 Biltmore Ave.), one of the premier performance venues in downtown Asheville.

“If you care about the arts in our area, this is the event for you,” said Katie Cornell, Executive Director of the Arts Council. “This is Asheville’s creative pulse check with exciting announcements, a delicious meal, and great conversation – you won’t want to miss it!”

Ticket sales will support the Arts Council’s mission to keep the arts at the heart of our community. Table sponsorship is available beginning at $1,000. Other opportunities to support the Arts Council and, by extension, the local arts community, are available as well.

The State of the Arts Brunch is part of the Asheville Area Arts Council’s ongoing Creative Sector Series. The Series has also included moderated town hall meet-and-greet events where artists and advocates have met candidates for state and local offices. Landings: A hybrid memoir/art book, with an introduction by New York Times Bestselling author Barbara Kingsolver.

In 130 ink-and-watercolor drawings, the story of one year on a family farm in Kentucky unfolds in captured moments of daily life: Donahue chopping wood, a cow sniffing her head, her daughter tending to goats after a hard day at school. Each visual is paired with a written reflection on the day’s doings, interwoven with the longer-arc history of her family, the farm, and their community. In telling the story of a farm family’s struggle to survive and thrive, Landings grapples with the legacy of our cultural divide between art and land and celebrates the beauty discovered along the way.

Arwen Donahue lives on a farm in Kentucky, where her family has raised produce for local markets for over 20 years. Her comics and graphic stories have been featured in The Nib, The Rumpus, The Indiana Review, and the forthcoming Field Guide to Graphic Literature. She has received grants from the Sustainable Arts Foundation, the Kentucky Foundation for Women, the Kentucky Humanities Council, and an Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council.

Eleven drawings from Landings were featured in the director’s cut of the documentary “Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry,” directed by Laura Dunn and produced by Robert Redford and Terrence Malick.

Curing Season: After spending four years of adolescence in suburban North Carolina, Kristine Langley Mahler, even as an adult, is still buffeted by the cultural differences between her pioneer-like upbringing in Oregon and the settled southern traditions into which she could never assimilate. Collecting evidence of displacement—a graveyard in a mall parking lot, a suburban neighborhood of white kids bused to desegregate public schools in the 1990s, and the death of her best friend—Curing Season is an attempt to understand her failed grasp at belonging.

Kristine Langley Mahler is a memoirist experimenting with the truth on the suburban prairie outside Omaha, Nebraska, a city ridging the backbone of the West and the Midwest. Her debut essay collection, Curing Season: Artifacts, is forthcoming with WVU Press on October 1, 2022. A second collection of essays, A Calendar is a Snakeskin, is forthcoming with Autofocus in spring 2023.

DETAILS

  1. By entering this raffle, entrants accept and agree to be bound by all the rules, limitations and restrictions set forth here and that their names and/or likenesses may be disclosed to and used by the news media and may otherwise be used by BMC for publicity purposes.
  2. The winner may choose a new 2022 Volvo, Subaru, or Hyundai prize vehicle from Hunter Automotive Group of Fletcher, NC with an MSRP up to $50,000.
  3. Vehicle choice will be subject to the current available inventory of the dealer. BMC reserves the right to substitute a Volvo, Subaru, or Hyundai model of equal value.
  4. The winner is responsible for all taxes, delivery costs, dealer fees, and any options he or she may choose above the vehicle’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) greater than $50,000.
  5. The gross winnings of the raffle will be reported to the federal and state tax authorities at the MSRP and the winner is responsible for income tax withholding prior to taking title to the prize.
  6. Individuals may purchase as many tickets as they wish; however, only 1,500 tickets will be sold.
  7. Participants must be 18 years old or older.
  8. BMC employees, faculty, and students 18 or older are eligible to participate.
  9. Winnings are not redeemable for cash.
  10. If a minimum of 600 tickets is not sold, all ticket holders will receive a full refund and the raffle will not occur.
  11. BMC does not make or provide any representation, guarantee or warranty, expressed or implied, in connection with the car and accepts no liability or responsibility regarding the construction or condition of the car.

WINNINGS

Once the winner has selected a prize vehicle, the Dealer will notify BMC of the award vehicle’s MSRP. BMC will calculate the required federal income taxes due. The raffle winner is responsible for remitting the funds to BMC for the federal income tax. Brevard Music Center is required by law to report the base MSRP of the vehicle the winner chooses as gaming income to federal and state authorities and to withhold and deposit federal income taxes equal to 25% of the MSRP less the wager (raffle ticket). The winner’s payment of the federal taxes to BMC will be deposited with the US Federal Treasury and the winner will receive credit for the taxes remitted. In order for the dealer to release the winner’s vehicle, the winner will need to provide the following to BMC:

  1. A completed form W-9.
  2. Payment to BMC of the appropriate amount of federal tax withholding in cash or certified check.

Amanda Parrish Morgan lives Connecticut with her husband and two kids where she teaches at Fairfield University and the Westport Writers’ Workshop. Stroller is her first book. Some of Morgans’s essays have appeared in the 2021 Connecticut Literary Anthology, Guernica, The Rumpus, The Millions, n+1, Electric Literature, Carve, The American Scholar and the Ploughshares Blog. As an editor, Maria has worked for various publishers, including Penguin Random House, BenBella Books, and Bloomsbury. She lives in Beacon, NY with her partner David and spends her free time googling facts about dormice.

Susan Harlan is a writer based in Winston-Salem, NC, who is particularly interested in the relationship between place, memory, and objects. Her essays have appeared in publications including The Guardian US, The Paris Review Daily, Guernica, Roads & Kingdoms, Racked, The Morning News, The Awl, Curbed, Atlas Obscura, Nowhere, The Common, Literary Hub, The Bitter Southerner, The Brooklyn Quarterly, and Public Books. Susan writes about feminist issues for venues such as Jezebel, The Toast, DAME, The South Carolina Review, The Belladonna, Queen Mob’s Tea House, and The Hairpin. She also writes satire for McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, Avidly, Janice, and The Billfold.

This raffle is a fundraising event, and all net proceeds benefit the Brevard Music Center (BMC). Brevard Music Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. EIN# 56-0729350

DRAWING

The drawing will take place on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 3:00pm EDT. All mail, phone, and internet orders must be received by 11:59pm EDT on Monday, November 14, 2022.

TICKETS

The cost to purchase a single entry (“Ticket”) for the Raffle is $125 (U.S. Funds only) and is not tax deductible.

DETAILS

  1. By entering this raffle, entrants accept and agree to be bound by all the rules, limitations and restrictions set forth here and that their names and/or likenesses may be disclosed to and used by the news media and may otherwise be used by BMC for publicity purposes.
  2. The winner may choose a new 2022 Volvo, Subaru, or Hyundai prize vehicle from Hunter Automotive Group of Fletcher, NC with an MSRP up to $50,000.
  3. Vehicle choice will be subject to the current available inventory of the dealer. BMC reserves the right to substitute a Volvo, Subaru, or Hyundai model of equal value.
  4. The winner is responsible for all taxes, delivery costs, dealer fees, and any options he or she may choose above the vehicle’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) greater than $50,000.
  5. The gross winnings of the raffle will be reported to the federal and state tax authorities at the MSRP and the winner is responsible for income tax withholding prior to taking title to the prize.
  6. Individuals may purchase as many tickets as they wish; however, only 1,500 tickets will be sold.
  7. Participants must be 18 years old or older.
  8. BMC employees, faculty, and students 18 or older are eligible to participate.
  9. Winnings are not redeemable for cash.
  10. If a minimum of 600 tickets is not sold, all ticket holders will receive a full refund and the raffle will not occur.
  11. BMC does not make or provide any representation, guarantee or warranty, expressed or implied, in connection with the car and accepts no liability or responsibility regarding the construction or condition of the car.

WINNINGS

Once the winner has selected a prize vehicle, the Dealer will notify BMC of the award vehicle’s MSRP. BMC will calculate the required federal income taxes due. The raffle winner is responsible for remitting the funds to BMC for the federal income tax. Brevard Music Center is required by law to report the base MSRP of the vehicle the winner chooses as gaming income to federal and state authorities and to withhold and deposit federal income taxes equal to 25% of the MSRP less the wager (raffle ticket). The winner’s payment of the federal taxes to BMC will be deposited with the US Federal Treasury and the winner will receive credit for the taxes remitted. In order for the dealer to release the winner’s vehicle, the winner will need to provide the following to BMC:

  1. A completed form W-9.
  2. Payment to BMC of the appropriate amount of federal tax withholding in cash or certified check.

Once both of these are received, BMC will authorize the dealer to release the vehicle. The winner will receive a Form W-2G by January 31, 2023 to use in preparing their 2022 income tax return.

Write Your Novel at the Library with NaNoWriMo

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel during the thirty days of November. Now, each year on Nov. 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand-new novel.

If you are doing NaNoWriMo this year, the Buncombe County Public Library wants to support you in your endeavors! Join us for the following events throughout the month to keep you invigorated and motivated. All events are free, but online events require registration.     Denise Kiernan at the Wedge: Join New York Times bestselling author Denise Kiernan for a NaNoWriMo event at the Wedge Brewery. Denise’s cohost for this event will be her husband, author and editor Joseph D’Agnese. This free event is sponsored by Buncombe County Public Libraries and Malaprops bookstore.
  • Saturday, Nov. 19 from 1-4 p.m.
    Read Local, Write Local Author’s Fair: Connect with local authors and readers at the first-ever Write Local, Read Local Author Fair at the Black Mountain Library! Join authors and illustrators as they talk about their books and writing, sell copies of their work, and get to know the readers living in their community. Writers will be selling copies of their books and we will also have books available for checkout. Cash only for author sales, please.

Patti O’Furniture Drag Bingo Fundraiser for Hendersonville Theatre

This November, Hendersonville audiences will have a fundraiser like no other. Patti O’Furniture, celebrity drag queen, will host a drag bingo fundraiser on November 5. The evening will feature two shows, a family-friendly show at 7 PM and an adults-only (18 and over) show at 9 PM. Tickets are $35 and are available online at HVLtheatre.org or by calling the Box Office at (828) 692-1082. Groups of 10 or more receive a 10 percent discount.

All proceeds will benefit Hendersonville Theatre. The ticket price includes a bingo card (a $5 value) and one beverage. Prizes will be awarded for winners of each round of bingo, as well as most creatively dressed. The fundraiser is sponsored by Dogwood, Hendersonville Pride, Lawn Fawn, Nichola Rae Photography, Raymond’s Garden Center, Street Fair, The Poe House, Wag! A Unique Pet Boutique and Water Cat Conduit.

Recently seen on season two of HBO’s We’re Here, Patti O’Furniture is making her Hendersonville debut. Patti is one of the most sought-after emcees in the region. She first hit the stage in 1999 and has been entertaining audiences across the country ever since. A fixture in the Charleston, Charlotte and Columbia drag scene, Patti has been named Miss South Carolina Pride and Miss Red Ribbon Friends of Myrtle Beach, where she spent her reign raising money for HIV/AIDS services along the SC coast.

In 2012, she was presented with the crown and title of Vista Queen Emeritus for her fundraising for Trustus Theatre in Columbia where she helped raise over $75,000 to support professional theatre.

Patti’s alter ego is a college professor from Spartanburg, SC. One thing has remained consistent since that very first show: every dollar that Patti collects on stage gets donated back to the community. All of her tips are donated to causes including HIV/AIDS prevention and education, animal welfare, LGBTQ+ civil rights, the environment and a host of local arts organizations. To date, she has raised over $1.5 million.

Since 1966, Hendersonville Theatre has provided an inviting and nurturing environment for live theatre, as well as high-quality, affordable entertainment for the residents of Hendersonville and surrounding areas. Hendersonville Theatre is wheelchair accessible, with free parking behind and in front of the theater.
