The 2nd annual Furman women’s basketball “Hoops & Heels” fundraising and women’s empowerment event is scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville.
National and Olympic champion coaching great Dawn Staley is the featured speaker for the event, which gets underway with a VIP cocktail hour at 6:00 p.m., followed by the dinner and program beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Registration and multiple sponsorship and ticket opportunities are detailed HERE.
“We are extremely excited to welcome National and Olympic Champion Dawn Staley as our speaker for this year’s “Hoops and Heels” event,” said Furman head coach Jackie Carson. “The interest in women’s basketball, particularly in the state of South Carolina, is at an all-time high due to Dawn’s program at the University of South Carolina. She is not only an amazing leader on the court but personifies true servant leadership with her civic and community engagement across the country. Her words will empower all attendees, and we look forward to the Greenville and Furman communities joining us for a legendary evening.”
Fresh off a 2022 NCAA National Championship and a gold medal winning performance in the Tokyo Olympics as the head coach of the USA Women’s Basketball National Team, Staley is one of the most respected and successful coaches in the game of basketball. As a stand-out student-athlete at the University of Virginia and in the WNBA, she has exemplified greatness both on the court and the sidelines. Staley’s legacy on the basketball landscape was immortalized when she was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2013.
Carson ’00, who starred for Furman as a player over a brilliant four-year career, is entering her 13th year as head coach at her alma mater. The Paladins are coming off their most successful season in 22 years and competed in postseason play for the third time in four seasons.

We’ll also have plenty of vendors at the race hub, live music, and a recovery zone with massages and PT!

Spend a relaxing afternoon immersed in flowers. Take in fall mountain views, tour the Blazing Star Flowers area, and learn about sustainable growing methods. Watch a demonstration to learn general design principals, then create your own centerpiece to take home. All levels of experience are welcome. Small group size. Light refreshments will be provided, and the $125 cost includes all tools and materials. Blazing Star Flowers is one of the entrepreneurial farm businesses in SAHC’s Farm Incubator Program.

Have you ever seen an airport runway and wanted to race down it? Now is your opportunity! The annual Runway 5K is your chance to take a jog down Taxiway Bravo, which is 150 feet to the west of our active runway. This is our once-a-year opportunity to run alongside planes taking off and landing!
All proceeds benefit local aviation education. October is only a few months away, so be sure to register today for this fun and exciting event! It’s a good opportunity to get some exercise, help the local community, and have a one-of-a-kind experience.
Trail running enthusiasts! We’re excited to bring you a memorable 50k course with high quality trail and spectacular views through a variety of forest ecosystems. Held in the Pisgah National Forest in the mountains of Western North Carolina this loop highlights some of the best trails in the region with plenty of climbing, rocks, and roots. This is a tough course, but will be rewarded with excellent trail, an awesome community, and fully stocked aid stations.

Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) and Asheville High School are bringing a new basketball tournament for players 16 and older with a grand prize of $500! Advance registration is required through www.ashevillenc.gov/parks.
Midnight Madness is a 3-on-3 format with teams of up to six co-ed players allowed. The $50 team entry fee includes a Midnight Madness jersey for each player, swag bag, prizes, food, and entertainment. Athletes from UNC Asheville, Mars Hill University, and other schools will also be on hand.
A spectacular trail running event! This 5.75 mile course is a good opportunity for beginners to hit the trails or for seasoned runners to show off climbing and descending speed. This is a beautiful and challenging course with lots of climbing!
Michigan-based Mosaic Artist Michelle Sider is presenting a one-time workshop this October in Asheville, N.C. Titled “Michelle Sider: Engaging. Dynamic. Realism” the three-day course will apply classical art guidelines, thoughtful design and modern art principles to encourage students to create stunning, realistic and expressive mosaics.
Sider is a visiting artist invited by Linda Pannullo Mosaics to present this program. It’s ideal for intermediate artists looking to elevate their skills. And for Sider, there’s no time like October to enjoy the natural beauty of this region. Much of her work is inspired by the fiery sunsets over Michigan’s lakes and graceful wildlife.
Linda Pannullo said she is “very excited to have an artist of this caliber for the first time in Asheville, North Carolina. I am always looking for ways to take my mosaics to the next level and this 3-day immersion with Michelle Sider – with her years of experience as an art teacher and mosaicist – will accomplish that.”
