On Thursday, August 8th, Hendersonville Green Drinks welcomes Jennifer Bauer, L.G, principal geologist and co-owner of Appalachian Landslide Consultants. Jennifer will provide a background on landslides in WNC and discuss the types of landslides that are most prevalent, where they occur, and what triggers them. Her talk aims to give people a better understanding of how landslides affect WNC and how we can protect ourselves from these natural and human-induced hazards.
Hendersonville Green Drinks is presented by MountainTrue, Conserving Carolina and Black Bear Coffee. Pre-event social begins at 5:30pm, talk beings at 6:00pm.

Join Southern Fried Karma Press and Dead Rabbits Books on a collaborative literary tour across North Carolina. Hear the work of different burgeoning authors, meet with publishers and editors about finding an audience for your work, and join in the conversation connecting the literary community.
At this event attendees will hear work by an author from each press, participate in a Q&A with the publishers, and connect with members of the local lit community in a meet-and-greet after the reading.
Southern Fried Karma, an independent publisher based in Newnan, GA, seeks to broaden Southern culture though inclusiveness, diversity, and recognition of individual experiences. SFK currently produces novels, audiobooks, and The New Southern Fugitives zine.
Dead Rabbits Books is a new book imprint based on the East Coast. Dead Rabbits opens windows and doorways into unglimpsed realities, taking the bold stance that reading still matters.

Amidst an atmosphere of melancholia, Peter Michel has thrown himself into a lifetime’s worth of writing, recording and touring belied by his young age. At just 17, the Seattle-based musician toured extensively with dream pop outfit Craft Spells, and most recently met critical acclaim with his personal project, Hibou. In ‘Halve’, Hibou’s third full length album, Michel creates a characteristically ethereal record addressing the dichotomies between childhood and adulthood, self and society, authenticity and superficiality. The outcome is a work filled with swooning, hazy reflections on loss, love, nostalgia, and joy from a 10,000 foot view. Michel’s vocals comfortably twist from echoing whispers to punkish accusations; his guitar from dizzying surf hooks to lush 80s-inspired chords. There’s more than Chunky Monkey and New York Super Fudge Chunk in downtown Asheville’s Ben & Jerry’s this summer.
Art created by Vance Elementary School fifth grade students of art educator Robbie Lipe is now on display on the brick walls opposite the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The exhibit depicts the students’ interpretation of the artist Kehinde Wiley and the contemporary portraits he creates inspired by traditional Baroque paintings. It will be featured through the end of the summer.
“Ben & Jerry’s is excited about showcasing art from the community inside our scoop shop,” said general manager Chris Carter. “Making use of our walls to show what local artists are creating complements our social mission — to be actively involved in the places we live and do business. I hope this is the first of many art exhibits on our walls.”
Carter gave all the credit for the exhibit to Ms. Lipe, who teaches kindergarten through 5th-grade students at Vance Elementary. She was named the North Carolina Arts Educators Association “Art Educator of the Year” in 2017-2018.
Ben & Jerry’s is located at 19 Haywood Street. Current hours are Monday-Thursday 12 pm to 10 pm; Friday 12 pm – 11 pm; Saturday 11:30 am – 11 pm; Sunday 11:30 am – 10 pm.

You can’t beat a walk with a friend over good conversation. So, why not take a walk with lots of friends and a history expert to boot? Buncombe County Libraries is excited to announce its Strolling Through History program focused on getting you moving while taking in some experiential history. “Each one of the strolls is a little different. We’ll talk about the evolution of the architecture, famous (or not quite so famous) residents, important events, and more,” explains Pack Memorial Librarian Katherine Calhoun Cutshall. “On our Haywood Street stroll, we talked about how the street has seen two major rebirths and discussed the careers of two WWI nurses who grew up on the street while it was mostly residential.”
Pack Librarians are always looking for innovative ways to showcase the library’s portfolio of initiatives and resources. “The North Carolina Room is a hidden gem in our library system, so programs like Strolling Through History bring the collection to the streets of downtown while showing off resources and programs in a fun new way,” notes Katherine. And of course, exercising your muscles and social skills are important at any age
So, how can you get involved with the monthly Strolling Through History? There are two versions: one for elder adults and one for babies and their caregivers. If you’re interested in participating, the elder adults strolls are the third Friday of every month, and the babies and caretakers strolls are the third Wednesday of every month (except July). All strolls will meet at Pack Memorial Library at 10:30 a.m., and participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring water to stay hydrated. Registration is required.
We are lucky to have incredible Animal Educators to help us spread the word on the important roles they play in the Park. Join one of our Park naturalists for an informal program where your family will love meeting some of our wilder teammates! Kids of all ages are sure to take home some fun facts and special memories. Then, grab a Track Trail brochure at the Animal Discovery Den and round out the day with a hike along our Great Woodland Adventure trail with 12 education stations. Don’t forget your camera!

Join us Friday, August 9th or Thursday, August 22nd at 5:30 PM as artists and the community will have the chance to learn how they can be involved in this unique experience. Guests will learn about upcoming opportunities to get involved, including having their work shown at a forthcoming exhibition, joining a “paint out,” exploring volunteer needs, and how to become a donor. The event will also be used to announce PAPA’s May 1st Preserving A Picturesque America: The French Broad serial publication launch party and PAPA/SOP art exhibition.
Our Mission: To raise awareness and preserve natural and historic places through
art and literature.
Background: The original Picturesque America serials explored natural as well as architectural wonders across the country and gave Americans a new perspective on these national treasures. It also posed an important question. Over one hundred and forty years ago the artists and writers asked ” …what will become of these unreplaceable natural places? ” By re-creating the original Picturesque America books from 1872 to 1874 we will look at how we as a nation have answered that question. Respected and preserved or exploited and destroyed?
The Saints of Paint are a group of artists based in Asheville who are collectively using their talents to raise funds for groups dedicated to preserving the environment, caring for animals, and working for positive social change. They host shows to support non-profit groups whose work they find inspirational.
