Festival Overview
In early Appalachia, chow chow, a crunchy pickled relish traditionally put up each summer, brought welcome sunshine to dinner plates during cold months. The condiment added color, brightness, nourishment, and a bright piquant zest that transformed the seemingly ordinary. By fermenting the garden’s final summer harvests, chow chow was a creative way to harness the earth’s resources in a jar for future culinary inspiration. Its ingredients were determined by the creative maker filling each crock, no two chow chow recipes quite the same.
Chow Chow: An Asheville Culinary Event, presented by Kimpton Hotel Arras, celebrates the area’s unique community of makers, each adding singular ingredients to the city’s recipe for culinary identity. From nationally recognized chefs to multi-generational farmers to millers, bakers, potters, weavers, and brewers, Chow Chow shines a light on the ancient creative spirit of the region that continues to make the Blue Ridge Mountains a delicious place to taste, to see, to explore and to experience through immersive culinary experiences.
Discover the alluring alchemy of mountain traditions, heirloom ingredients, and urban energy that inspire the James Beard-nominated chefs, sustainable farmers, innovative brewers, artisans, and foragers who commune at Asheville’s collaborative table.
Much like its namesake condiment, this unique festival is far greater than the sum of its parts.
Hot Works 4th Asheville Fine Art Show, October 26 & 27, 2019 takes place in Pack Square Park, downtown Asheville. This art show is juried by art professionals and brings artists to sell his/her art in all discipline including paintings, sculpture, clay, glass, fiber, jewelry, wood and more. All art is original and personally handmade by the artist who is present at the show. There is something for everyone, in all price ranges. You will see many artists at this show who do not attend other shows in North Carolina or South Carolina.
As part of our commitment to bring art education into the community, a Youth Art Competition for grades K-8 or ages 5-13 is integrated within a 10×20 space at the Asheville Fine Art Show. Sponsored by Institute for the Arts & Education, the associated 501c3 non-profit organization, all students in grades K-8 or ages 5-13 are encouraged to enter his/her original and personally handmade art that will be publicly displayed in the art show the entire weekend. On Sunday, October 27 at 3pm, there is $250 in youth art awards presented. Students are exposed to the rules and entrepreneurship opportunity of doing art shows for a living. The program brings families to the art show and exposes them to great art.
Momentum Gallery, in downtown Asheville, hosts an opening reception for its fall group exhibition – A New Leaf, Thursday, September 12th, from 5-8pm.
A New Leaf is a sophisticated collection of original works celebrating the charm and beauty of one of nature’s great wonders – foliage. From atmospheric photography to glass sculpture, trompe l’oeil relief paintings and eye-popping infinity mirrors, exquisite works are cast or constructed from actual leaves while others imitate their natural counterparts. Coinciding with leaf season in the mountains, this exhibition continues at 24 N Lexington Avenue through Saturday, November 9th.
Demetra Theofanous collaborates with her partner Dean Bensen to compose arrangements of remarkably detailed, cast glass leaves into cascading, wall-mounted arrangements that appear as if they’re being blown by the wind. Trompe l’oeil master Ron Isaacs’ calls his series of small, wall-mounted works in the show Couples. Isaacs’ paired leaves constructed as all of his work is from birch plywood and painted, often appear anthropomorphic, frozen mid embrace. Artists Jo Stealey and Hillary Waters Fayle incorporate actual foliage in their works. Fayle incises and embroiderers leaves to make wonderfully intimate works, while Stealey fashions tonal wall-hangings with bold geometric patterns reminiscent of tapestries.
Other artists participating in A New Leafinclude: Elizabeth Busey, printmaking; Jeri Eisenberg, photography; Linda Ethier, cast glass; Amy Gross, mixed media; Kit Paulson, lampworked glass; Sandy Rothberg, photography; Jim Sams, wood sculpture; and Tim Tate, mixed media.

You can’t beat a walk with a friend over good conversation. So, why not take a walk with lots of friends and a history expert to boot? Buncombe County Libraries is excited to announce its Strolling Through History program focused on getting you moving while taking in some experiential history. “Each one of the strolls is a little different. We’ll talk about the evolution of the architecture, famous (or not quite so famous) residents, important events, and more,” explains Pack Memorial Librarian Katherine Calhoun Cutshall. “On our Haywood Street stroll, we talked about how the street has seen two major rebirths and discussed the careers of two WWI nurses who grew up on the street while it was mostly residential.”
Pack Librarians are always looking for innovative ways to showcase the library’s portfolio of initiatives and resources. “The North Carolina Room is a hidden gem in our library system, so programs like Strolling Through History bring the collection to the streets of downtown while showing off resources and programs in a fun new way,” notes Katherine. And of course, exercising your muscles and social skills are important at any age
So, how can you get involved with the monthly Strolling Through History? There are two versions: one for elder adults and one for babies and their caregivers. If you’re interested in participating, the elder adults strolls are the third Friday of every month, and the babies and caretakers strolls are the third Wednesday of every month (except July). All strolls will meet at Pack Memorial Library at 10:30 a.m., and participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring water to stay hydrated. Registration is required.
Head to the bucolic hills of Fairview, just southeast of Asheville, where western North Carolina’s rich agricultural heritage lives on at family farms and artisan food producers. Experience the century-plus legacy of Hickory Nut Gap Farm, a sustainable farm run by the fifth generation of family owners. Savor award-winning farmstead cheeses at Looking Glass Creamery–a place so hands-on, the cheese maker milks the cows herself–and pick up fresh-from-the-fields produce at Flying Cloud Farm. Along the way, enjoy locally produced beverages. Live music at Hickory Nut Gap Farm by Zoe and Cloyd.
at each farm, there is a guest chef providing a dish featuring products from that particular farm. There will be a beverage pairing at each stop. At Hickory Nut Gap Farm, there are a few chef stations and live music. Transportation to and from downtown is also provided for this event.

The Regional Artist Project Grant is an annual grant program that provides financial support to developing professionals by funding a project pivotal to the advancement of their careers as artists. The selection criteria include artistic merit, the potential of the project to contribute to the artist’s professional growth, and the feasibility of the project itself. The Asheville Area Arts Council, Toe River Arts Council, and the Madison County Arts Council are pleased to announce the 2019/2020 Regional Artist Project Grant application is open.
The Regional Artist Project Grants awarded range from $400 – $1,200. Full or partial cash match is not required but is preferred. Artists currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program and artists who have received a Regional Artist Project Grant within the last two funding cycles are not eligible.

Gallery 101, a new downtown art gallery owned and operated by the artist. Jun is a South Korean-born former art director for corporate brands, stage director for prominent theater and television companies, and installation artist. He has written and directed numerous stage productions and art exhibitions in locations such as Seoul, New York, N.Y., and London, U.K.
Sponsored and coordinated by The Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce, the team lovingly refers to this year’s event as the Second-THIRD-ANNUAL HARMON FIELD MUSIC FESTIVAL. On Saturday, September 14 (12:00 noon to 8:00 pm), five great bands all headline the event Rich Nelson Band, Nobody’s Fault, Citizen Mojo, Lecretia w/Thunder Road, Shane Pruitt and Gregory Hodges. The music offerings are a blend of Country, Rock and Blues.
Bring your dancing shoes, a pop-up chair and a great attitude to enjoy Harmon Field at its very best! The music festival is going to be a BLAST! An assortment of food trucks will be on site. Beer and wine will also be available for purchase. A car show and craft/vendor market will also be available for perusing during the day.
Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at CarolinaFoothillsChamber.com. Tickets are also available at the Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce office, One of the goals was to make this event affordable for attendees. Starting at 12:00 noon and running until 8:00 pm – it runs about a $1 an hour! Tickets are $8. In advance and $10. at the gate. Children 12 and under are free.

The 2019 Fool’s Gold Mountain Bike Race will be returning to the beautiful Montaluce Winery in Dahlonega, GA. As far as the course, expect lots of fast & flowy singletrack, some amazing singletrack descents, a sprinkle of pavement, and two major sustained climbs. The semi-annual event is open to all children ages 15 and under and is sponsored by Buncombe County Recreation Services.
Fishing begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends promptly at 11:30 a.m.
Register online now through September 12 at midnight. On-site registration will also be available at 8:00 a.m. the day of the tournament. Your registration fee covers fishing bait, snacks, and a hot dog lunch at the conclusion of the tournament. No fishing license is required for children under 16 years of age.
This is a catch and release event. Lake Julian Park will supply a bucket for each competitor’s catch. After the fish has been weighed and measured, it will be released back into the lake. Participants bring their own pole.
Fishing is allowed anyplace inside the Lake Julian Park boundaries. No boat fishing is allowed. All children must be accompanied by at least one adult.
Children will be grouped into one of five age categories and prizes awarded in each category. Prizes will be given for the biggest fish, the smallest fish, and the most fish caught. In addition, all competitors in every age group will have an opportunity to show off their casting skills. Casting poles and targets are provided and children can demonstrate their ability anytime during the tournament. There are prizes for the winners of the casting competition, too!
Asheville Outlets (AshevilleOutlets.com) and Oasis Shriners 500’s invite the community to come out and support the Shriners Hospital for Children at the Formula4Kids & Chili Cook-off on September 14th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center. The event will feature a display of Oasis Shriner 500’s cars, a chili cook-off competition, 50/50 drawing, prizes and much more! All proceeds from the event benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. Asheville Outlets (ShopAshevilleOutlets.com), The Blue Ridge EV Club and Tesla Owners Group of Western North Carolina present The Exciting World of Electric Vehicles on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Asheville Outlets as part of National Drive Electric Week. Electric vehicle owners and dealers will be present with the latest long range EVs, 4-wheel drive EVs, Plug-In Hybrids, used and new electric vehicles and more. Residents, electric vehicle enthusiasts, and those wanting to learn more are invited to this free event taking place at the parking lot behind Gap Factory Store. Rain date is Sunday, September 22, 2019.
Spoonin’: A Showcase of Handcrafted Spoons will open at Grovewood Gallery in Asheville, with a reception (free and open to the public). This group exhibition will include both functional and sculptural works from 18 notable artists from across the country, whose mediums range from wood to sterling silver and copper. Spoonin’ will remain on view through Sunday, October 13, 2019.

Newer trails with small treats such as a play meadow and splashing streams highlight this trail with a 360-degree view that includes the summits of Bearwallow Mountain, Little Pisgah Mountain, and the upper end of Hickory Nut Gorge. This medium-steep hike is a 2-mile loop and its suburban location offers plenty of lunch options nearby. Meet at the Collier Cove Nature Preserve parking area (175 Rhododendron Drive in Arden).
For years, the Sierra Club has worked with Asheville Greenworks (which provides all the equipment) to be on the French Broad River in Asheville (or perhaps the Swannanoa River) picking up trash by canoe. Kayakers can bring their own craft.
