Sponsored by the NC Museum of History, the Smith-McDowell House chapter of the Tar Heel Junior Historians Association is a vital part WNCHA’s youth programing.
Our Chapter (nicknamed SMH over History) is open to school-age students and meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 4:00 pm during the school year. New members are always welcome!
In response to Covid-19, we will meet virtually via Zoom until otherwise noted.
Members receive two magazines per year from the NC Museum of History and there are opportunities in the State Contest program.
The club is open at any time in the year to school-age students (grades 1 – 12). There is a small registration fee of $10 ($5 for each eligible sibling) that helps to defray some costs of programming and supplies. Scholarships are available for students unable to pay the registration fee. Please contact us for more details. Parents generally participate in the meetings and younger siblings are welcome. New members are always welcome to visit for a couple of meetings before making the decision to join.

Dive into Broadway repertoire and character analysis in this class that celebrates “I want” songs; the musical moment spotlighting a protagonist’s hopes and dreams. With a focus on acting through song, intention, and motivation, young artists will discover what drives a character as they learn, develop, and perform a musical revue of “I want” songs presented at the end of the semester in an original virtual showcase.

February is Black History Month, and we invite you to learn about the story and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black pilots in the US military who bravely fought during World War II. Their story is brought to life in Trey Ellis and Ricardo Khan’s play, Fly, produced on the Rock in 2015.

Buncombe County Health and Human Services (BCHHS) has launched a COVID-19 vaccination waitlist for individuals in the first two phases of the state’s vaccination priority list: adults 65 and older and all health care workers. Individuals can sign up for the waitlist by calling (828) 250-5000 or by going to www.buncombeready.org. As vaccines are received from the state, representatives from the Ready Team will contact individuals on the waitlist via phone to schedule their appointments. We have compiled some frequently asked questions below.
Who can sign up for the waitlist?
Vaccine supplies remain much lower than demand, so waitlist opportunities are only available at this time to those active groups identified by the NCDHHS. If you are over the age of 65 or a health care worker in Buncombe County, you can sign up for the waitlist to receive a COVID vaccine so that you don’t have to keep calling or emailing the department to get an appointment.
The only required information to be added to the waitlist is your name, a reliable way to contact you and that you fall into one of the phases eligible for a vaccine at this time. There is no citizenship status requirements, cost, or insurance information required at any time during the vaccination process.
What happens after I sign up?
Once you are signed up for the waitlist, you will receive a confirmation email within 48 hours. The confirmation email should have your waitlist ID number, your name, telephone number and email address. The waitlist ID number is where you fall on the waitlist based on when you signed up for the waitlist.
As we receive vaccine from the state, we open up appointments. We use the waitlist to schedule our appointments. You can call the Ready Team at (828)250-5000 if you have a question about your waitlist confirmation.
When will I be called?
Once we have an available appointment and reach your spot on the waitlist, a member of the Ready Team will notify you by calling you from the number (828)419-0095.
As we move through the waitlist, our staff will make two attempts to reach you using the contact information that you provide. Please make sure this information is correct.
Once we get to your number on the waitlist you will receive a call from the Ready Team at (828) 419-0095 to schedule your appointment.
No matter how thorough and fair a reappraisal may be, there are still instances when only the property owner has all the information necessary for an accurate appraisal. Informal appeals for the tax year 2021 can be filed anytime between Jan. 1-April 28, 2021. Additionally, anyone receiving a change of value notice after April 1, 2021 has thirty days from that notice date to file an appeal.
Traveling Trunks and Kits are an economical way to bring the Museum to YOU! Rental fee is a refundable deposit of $15 per trunk. Trunks include many artifacts and a week of lessons.
Trunk deposits are always refundable, but if you choose to donate your deposit, these funds are used to assist students with economic needs to be able to come on field trips or to Living History Days.

Another way to bring the Museum to YOU is with an In-School Presentation!
A trained museum volunteer or staff person will present any of the above topics in your school. Programs may be presented to as many as 50 students per presentation (some are more hands-on and 25 students would be more appropriate).
Cost is $3 per student.
Choose a program, traveling trunk/kit, or suggest a custom program. Craft topics may include an extra supply fee.
Asheville’s economic and building boom of the 1920s created a rarified atmosphere unique within Western North Carolina. Douglas Ellington is known as the architect who changed Asheville into an Art Deco showplace. With his ability to combine architectural styles he produced a series of one of a kind buildings—buildings which changed the face of Asheville—the City Building, Asheville High School, First Baptist Church and S&W Cafeteria. Douglas Ellington: Asheville’s Boomtown Architect presents a look at his iconic Asheville creations along with other buildings he completed throughout his career in other cities.

Drawing inspiration from Vantage Points, students are challenged to use photography to explore people, places, and storytelling.
Please note:
- Youth Studio is held indoors in the Museum’s Education Center.
- Space is limited to small groups of up to eight students; face coverings and social distancing are required.

YOUTH STUDIO
Youth Studio is the Museum’s new studio program for children and teens! Students experiment and explore a variety of media and techniques through classes and workshops led by visiting artists and Museum educators. Classes meet 2–4 weeks and are designed for a deeper exploration of a specific media; workshops meet 3–5 hours and introduce a new medium or process. All materials are provided by the Museum.
The Museum is committed to making our programs accessible to everyone, regardless of economic means. With support from the Walnut Cove Members Association, we are able to provide a limited amount of financial aid to help students who could not otherwise afford to enroll in our programs. Join us for 7 weeks on Zoom for a fun and interactive Dance class covering the fundamentals of dance for the theater! Each week, we will warm up our bodies, learn new basic jazz, ballet, and musical theatre steps, and work on a fun new dance combination to some of our favorite songs. Some past combinations featured songs from Hamilton, Wicked, The Greatest Showman, Lady GaGa, Trolls and more! Students will learn a recorded dance combination performance which will be shared with families after the final class.

About the Presenter : Saro Lynch-Thomason is a ballad singer, song writer, folklorist, documentarian, and illustrator from Asheville, North Carolina. Her passion for traditional music, people’s struggles and Appalachian traditions calls her to perform, teach and produce media that tell the stories and songs of America’s social history. Her multi-media projects include the CD Blair Pathways: A Musical Exploration of America’s Largest Labor Uprising, her solo album Vessel featuring unaccompanied ballad singing; and Lone Mountain , the first-ever children’s book about the national tragedy of mountaintop removal mining. Saro holds an M.A. in Appalachian Studies, a Certificate in Documentary Studies, and serves as the events coordinator for the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center.

You will play online with 2 or 3 other students while I teach you how to play in four weekly lessons at the Mah Jongg classroom. In addition, a Zoom link provides audio and visual support. This group is designed to teach American Mah Jongg is a fun and stimulating game of strategy, skill, and luck. Mah Jongg is a 4 player game using 152 tiles and the National Mah Jongg rule card. All lessons are done in a virtual, interactive classroom through the School of American Mah Jongg. This online course is offered as a primer in the craft of scripted performance, exploring the steps to submitting audition tapes, sustaining connected scene work through a screen, and creating three-dimensional characters on a two-dimensional medium. Learn how people see you and what you convey when you are on stage, and now on screen. Armed with that awareness, learn how to best choose and deliver the monologue to land you the parts that are perfect for you. If given material to audition with, learn how to break down the sides, how to discover the beats of the scene, and how to offer varied options. And when you land the part, learn how to attack the script, build the arc of your character, and establish the thoughts behind the lines. This course will culminate with a streamed showcase of the best work created in the class.

6 Week Session: January 20 – February 24, 2021
Wednesdays, 6:30-7:45 pm
Law of Attraction (LOA) is a powerful guideline that can be utilized within our lives, and impacts ourselves as well as the collective consciousness. Let’s discuss practical, everyday ways we use and apply these tools in 2020! This session’s discussion will be, “Visualization exercises in LOA.” No advance prep, reading or knowledge required. Come with an open mind and heart, free of judgement, and let’s learn together! This is an inclusive, informal, interactive discussion for people will all levels of LOA understanding.
Some other topics we will cover in future discussions include:
– How to utilize LOA to manifest best case scenarios
– Gratitude practices as a tool in manifestation
– Honoring your own feelings, emotions and well being (and others) as a form of self care while manifesting
– Staying grounded, avoiding toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing when manifesting
– Visualization exercises in LOA
– Manifesting on specific themes (love, money, good health, etc.)
Discussions will be held by Kathryn Brahaney, myself. I’ve utilized Law of Attraction in having a significantly better recovery than anticipated from two major car accidents, in receiving a job offer that allowed me to relocate to Asheville, NC (where I live now) and in finding my favorite apartment to date in a city I wasn’t sure would be in my budget. I started these discussions to share my experience using Law of Attraction and to provide opportunities to learn more that are accessible and affordable. Looking forward to sharing more with you all and chatting about how we can use LOA in navigating the rest of 2020 and beyond!

The LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin and YWCA USA partnered on a research paper entitled “America’s Recovery from the 2020 “Shecession”: Building a Female Future of Childcare and Work,” which details how challenges and systemic inequities are contributing to this economic crisis’ and the disproportionate impact on women. The white paper outlines how national and local policymakers have failed to identify women’s economic security concerns, despite overwhelming support among women, around key areas like childcare, equal pay, and fair workplaces. The authors of the report demonstrate the ways the country’s childcare system is failing parents, children, childcare workers, and the American economy, and raise serious concerns about a future of work that will automate women out of the workforce.
What is the 21 Day Racial Equity & Social Justice Challenge?
Many people are becoming newly aware of how systemic racism and violence are impacting people of color. Even if you are new to the conversation, that is OK. Our 21 Day Challenge is designed to create dedicated time and space to build more effective social justice habits, particularly those dealing with issues of race, power, privilege, and leadership. Participants who sign up for the Challenge will receive daily tasks via email to help foster their understanding and awareness, with activities such as reading an article, listening to a podcast, or reflecting on personal experience. If you’ve already completed this challenge with us in the past please know that our challenge is designed to be taken multiple times by selecting different daily challenges in order to expand what you have previously learned.
