Join Burial Beer at the taproom for a discussion of all things beer and non-beer related. They’ll be joined by TRVE Brewing and Troubadour Maltings from CO, the collaborators for the fifth release of the Ambient Terrain Series.

Head to The Thirsty Monk Biltmore Park on Tuesday, June 12th at 7pm for Monk Beer Academy. The topic this month will be Fermented Foods and Beer Pairing! Continuing the theme of pairing delicious foods with equally tasty beers, this month they’ve decided to go all in with fermentation. Explore how foods are preserved through fermentation techniques, find out which beer styles are compatible with various types of fermented foods, and discuss why they complement or contrast each other so well.

The Amazing Acro-cats Featuring Tuna and the Rock Cats are a troupe of REAL performing house cats. The Acro-cats experience all started with Chief Executive Human (CEH for short) and animal trainer Samantha Martin. She has not only rescued her own pets, but also has found happy homes for over 200 homeless cats and kittens. Using the magic of clicker training (a stress-free positive reinforcement method) Samantha and the cats take their newfound amazing abilities on the road, and tour the nation’s stages in the infamous Acro-cat bus! A portion of the proceeds always benefits our mobile foster and rescue efforts. They have cats riding skateboards, jumping through hoops, and Alley, our rising star, has even leapt into the Guinness Book of World Records, holding the record for the longest cat jump!

Join White Labs for a first day of summer celebration! White Labs Asheville’s Education & Engagement Curator, Jo Doyle, is teaming up with Meg Chamberlain “Fermentrix” of Fermenti for an hour and a half pairing session.

Nutritious Thoughts is offering two new educational support groups. The Diabetes Education and Support Group is open to members of the community who have diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, or Gestational) and would benefit from extra education and support around this disease. The group will meet for an hour on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 6 to 7 pm at the Nutritious Thoughts office and will include a short education provided by Registered Dietitian, Margaret Ruch, MS, RD, LDN. The gatherings will also include plenty of time for peer support for members to help each other deal with the daily demands of life with diabetes.
“I’m excited to be able to offer this group as there’s a real need for education and support around this issue that is so common in our community,” stated Margaret Ruch, MS, RD, LDN.
The second group is open to all those dealing with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and looking for more comradery and assistance in navigating their relationship with food and PCOS. This group will be led by Registered Dietitian, Katie Rhodes, RD, LDN, and will be held the 4th Wednesday of every month from 6 to 7 pm at Nutritious Thoughts.
On the heels of a wildly successful start to 2018, comedian, actor, author Sebastian Maniscalco continues his blockbuster “Stay Hungry” international tour. This fall, he will be kicking off the second leg of the tour making its way across the US and Canada with stops in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Vancouver and Calgary. Maniscalco recently wrapped the spring leg of his tour with five sold-out shows at New York’s iconic Radio City Music Hall. People Magazine’s “The comedian’s comedian” broke the historic venue’s record with his appearances ranking him the highest grossing comedy weekend in their 85+ year history. Fans around the world hungry to see the performance will get their chance as the set was filmed for an upcoming Netflix special to air later this year. Details will be announced soon.

2018 will also see Maniscalco expand his major motion picture portfolio to include roles in “TAG,” starring alongside Jon Hamm, Ed Helms and Jeremy Renner as well as “Green Book” with Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini and Viggo Mortensen. Sebastian has made a deal with Lionsgate to develop a multi-generational comedy he will executive produce, cowrite with Austen Earl (The Great Indoors) and star in. Inspired by his stage routines, which touch on his Italian American family the script will follow two families from different worlds celebrating their first summer holiday together.

This workshop is designed as an introduction to managing photographs on the home PC or MAC computer. It will cover basic computer operation and workflow related to image handling and photo manipulation. Topics include importing photographs into the computer, basic image manipulation in Photoshop Elements, converting Jpeg images to Tiff and uses of each type file, sizes and resolution (dpi/ppi), storing, organizing, and archiving images on the computer, preparing files for email, web page, print output. Participants use Photoshop Elements to improve images by cropping, resizing, color correcting, sharpening, correcting flaws, and much more. A basic understanding of your computer is needed, but no prior Photoshop knowledge is necessary. Full course description is available at www.barnwellphoto.com Preregistration is required. Join Defenders of Wildlife for our summer Wildlife Workshop & Walkabout to learn about bats — which species live in our region, why they’re important, and how we’re addressing the conservation challenges they face.
Special guest presenter: Nina Fascione, Defenders’ Vice President of Philanthropy and former Executive Director of Bat Conservation International
At the workshop we will build bat boxes to install on the campus New Belgium Brewing Company, which abuts the west shore of the French Broad River and provides great bat habitat!
Because bats are nocturnal, our walkabout will start just before dusk when bats become active and will include the identification of other nocturnal creatures like moths and insects. You won’t want to miss it!

Before it was Fletcher, it was Murrayville. The Preservation Society of Asheville & Buncombe County is pleased to host a program about the history of a small town with a colorful past, to say the least!
Our speaker and historian, Brenda Coates, tells of the 18th C founding Murray family that helped form what is now Fletcher. Coates is the author of At the End of Road the Journey Begins: How the Murray Clan Shaped the Character of Western North Carolina. She will bring the town’s rich history alive – starting from pioneer life and the stagecoach Inn, where Howard’s Gap Road intersected the Buncombe Turnpike. The tale turns tragic with a limestone mine cave in, touches on a mysterious hanging and taps into what makes Fletcher special.
This presentation is scheduled for July 19th, starting at 5:30 at the old Feed and Seed store, located at 3715 Hendersonville Road in Fletcher. The doors open at 5:00, and the program begins with a half hour of Appalachian and blue grass music by Brian Hunter and Friends. Brenda’s talk begins at about 6:00 pm.
The old Feed and Seed store is an example of active and successful historic preservation. Now the home of the Feed and Seed Church, the site was the former Fletcher Supply Company, built in 1919 by the Youngblood family, and was the “heart of downtown Fetcher” for many years. Pastor Phillip Trees of the Feed and Seed Church saw the site’s potential and appreciated its history.
Pastor Phillip recruited volunteer labor to rehabilitate the building for worship space, preserving the hardwood floors and hammered tin tiles on 12 foot ceilings. The space now hosts community gatherings for family-friendly regional and bluegrass music, and also clogging dances on Friday and Saturday nights.
Everyone is invited to this upcoming PSABC event. While admission is free, a $10 donation helps support local preservation.
