Soak up the summer sun every Tuesday on a soft, sandy volleyball court. Register as a free agent, group, or full team. Games are played June 18-August 13.
Play is 6 vs. 6 with rally scoring to 21. Each team will play two matches each week (consisting of 3 total sets each match) with each win and loss factoring into team standings. Games are scheduled at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 at Buncombe County Sports Park. You will receive a weekly schedule at the beginning of the season with play times listed.
Teams are:

? Consist of at least 6 players (age 18+) with at least two female or two male players on the field at any time
? Not required to have any previous adult volleyball experience
? Not required to call lines (independent professional referees will be at each game)
? Required to have fun and a “good sport” attitude

This class is designed for tight and sore people! We’ll do a full body foam roller in about 1/2 an hour, and we’ll also add in tennis balls, dowels, the wall, and other props. We’ll stretch deep into your hips, hamstrings, calves, quads, pecs, chest, arms, shoulders, and more, while enjoying delicious chocolate.

Preparing your garden for winter is the theme of the series that will cover topics such as when to seed and transplant, which vegetables to plant, site location based on the hours of sunlight, and simple techniques for winter protection. Additional topics include raised beds, fertilization and water, mulching systems, three-season cover cropping, harvesting tips and timelines, fall and winter pest pressure, and increasing plant hardiness. In addition, winter planning for spring gardening will be covered.
Diana Schmitt McCall will be teaching the workshop series for Organic Growers School. Jacquelyn was told since she was a child that she was sensitive to the energy of others. Many times she was called upon to help family and friends find lost objects. Professionally Jacquelyn used her energetic and Intuitive gifts to clear houses of intense energies. Many times it was the home dwellers themselves that were in need of the readings. This developed Jacquelyn’s skills in reading people and providing insight and guidance in their life. She also uses Oracle cards to help clients with specific questions they have relating to love, money, success, healing and more!

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.
Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.
Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.

In true pub fashion, The White Horse has hosts a traditional Irish style session every Tuesday night. Sessions are in many ways the heart and soul of Irish traditional music, a place for players to share tunes and socialize. It’s not a performance, but rather an informal situation in which listeners are welcome to participate, whether offering encouragement, singing along on a chorus, or asking questions about the music and instruments. White Horse sessions regularly draws players from as far away as Waynesville, Cullowhee, Rutherfordton and even Clayton, Georgia.

We are gearing up for our August 16th Downtown After 5 with The Artisanals, The National Reserve and Emma’s Lounge. We are still in need of volunteers for our set up shift and 2nd shifts (remember 2nd shifts get 2 credits, and to receive VIP access to our end of year party a late shift is required). Buncombe County is excited to announce applications are open for nonprofits looking for a cash infusion. For the fourth year, Tipping Point Grants are seeking proposals from nonprofit organizations working to help support County Commissioners’ six strategic priorities:
- Affordable housing
- Clean, renewable energy
- Diverse community workforce
- Early childhood education
- Justice resource support
- Opioid awareness
All projects must be a part of a Buncombe County-based nonprofit with 501c3 or a similar charitable IRS tax exempt designation. All individual innovators must be in partnership with a nonprofit agency.
Ready to apply for a Tipping Point Grant?
Official Tipping Point Grant applications are required. You may apply online here, or you can pick up hard copy applications at the Community Engagement office at 199 College St., right next door to the Register of Deeds’ office from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Please contact the office to make sure someone is there to provide you with an application. The deadline for submitting a grant is on Friday, Aug. 30, 2019 by 5 p.m.
Optional grant writing workshops will be hosted by Buncombe County on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019, 3-5 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 15 and Friday, Aug. 16 from 5-7:30 p.m. Workshops will be held on the ground floor of 200 College St.
These are free sessions and open to anyone. Applicants will be able to get support on proposal writing and will be able to leave the workshop with an application ready to go and/or submitted. If you have any questions, contact Rasheeda McDaniels at (828) 250-4102.

We are honored and thrilled to announce “Moogmentum: Synthesizing Innovation, Music, and Creativity“, a three day celebration of the grand opening of the Moogseum.
Moogmentum will kick off at the Asheville Masonic Temple Theater on Tuesday evening, August 13, 2019 with a pair of special events:
- 7pm: From the Beginning With Herb Deutsch, in Conversation with Larry Fast – Herb Deutsch, the educator, innovator, and musician who was the catalyst and the co-collaborator on the development of Moog synthesizer in 1964, will talk about his very early days forging new sonic pathways with Bob. Woven into his insights will be listening sessions of the rare “Abominatron Tape“, the 84-minute tape that Bob sent Herb with the prototype in 1964, in which he describes and demonstrates every single parameter of this new sonic creature. - 9pm: The Story of Bob and i – Legendary keyboardist Patrick Moraz (YES, Refugee, The Moody Blues), in conversation with Larry Fast, shares a one-of-a kind synthesis of performance and interview during which he will perform on Bob Moog’s personal piano and on various synthesizers, interspersed with sharing unique insights about the extensive time he spent working closely with Bob in the mid-1970s, and about their decades-long friendship. Rarely seen photos will be woven throughout the concert, as will audio and video from Patrick’s long career. Historian, technologist, and musician Larry Fast will guide the discussion with Patrick. - 2:30pm: Modulations with Moogs and Moraz – In this intimate VIP event at the Moogseum, (capacity limited to 25 attendees) legendary keyboardist Patrick Moraz shares his history integrating Moog synthesizers into his music, while exploring the massive sonic capabilities of those instruments on vintage gear, followed by a Q&A from the audience, and a CD signing. - 11:30am: Synthesizer Alchemy, a Workshop with Lisa Bella Donna Explore the sonic landscape with dynamic synthesist Lisa Bella Donna in this insightful workshop as she shares the vast possibilities of using a variety of contemporary and vintage synthesizers with various unique effect pedals. Lisa will lend her decades of experience to share insights into musical and sound design, and take questions throughout the session. A CD signing will follow. - 2pm: Moogmentum Keynote Discussion – Tracing Analog to Digital Historian, technologist, and musician Larry Fast will speak to the early beginnings of Bob Moog’s innovations, and trace the evolution of that technology through to digital synthesis and beyond. - 4pm: Moogseum Ribbon Cutting – The Asheville Chamber of Commerce celebrates the grand opening of the Moogseum with a champagne toast and tour of the Moogseum with Michelle Moog-Koussa. This event is free and open to the public.
- 8pm: Sonic Explorations, a Concert with Lisa Bella Donna –Synthesist Lisa Bella Donna will electrify the stage at the Asheville Music Hall by bringing contemporary and vintage synthesizers together for an evening of sound sculpting and sequencing, mixed with improvisational explorations. Do you love to read? Do you like children? The Buncombe County Public Library’s Preschool Outreach Project (POP) is currently looking for volunteers. POP is an outreach service of the library, a program designed to bring the joy and excitement of books to children in child care centers. Our volunteers offer stories, songs, puppets and smiles to our youngest book lovers – children under the age of 5.
No formal experience is needed, just a strong commitment to both children and reading. Most volunteers spend approximately five hours per month on POP, reading twice a month at their assigned center. We ask that volunteers commit to participate with our program for one full school year. All story time materials are provided by the library.
All POP volunteers must participate in story time training and submit to a background check. The next training is Monday, Aug. 26.
Interested volunteers must complete a volunteer application before Aug. 19. Applications can be filled out here.

In a small-town South of Austin, Texas vocalist and songwriter Molly Burch is relaxing in her sunny country home. The 27-year-old is enjoying the calm before the storm that will kick start when her much anticipated sophomore album First Flower hits the public. The Los Angeles native has found tranquility in the outskirts of Texas, appreciating time on the front porch as cicadas sing in the distance behind her.
Burch burst onto the music scene in 2017 with her debut album Please Be Mine, a ten-track ode to unrequited romance that she wrote after studying Jazz Vocal Performance at the University of North Carolina in Asheville. Please Be Mine earned praise from critics for her smoky, effortless vocals and bleeding-heart lyrics.
“I was really blown away with how many people told me that the music has helped them through their own break-up,” she says of Please Be Mine. “I was just so moved by that. I never expected it. I was aware that people were actually listening to my music and having a positive experience, so [with the next album] I wanted to reveal my own struggles with fear and anxiety.”
After a year of touring Please Be Mine all over North America, Europe and the UK, Burch returned to Texas to decompress. All of a sudden, she was devoid of stimulation with nothing but time on her hands.
“I was scared of not being able to write a great follow-up album,” Burch admits. “I was in that state, but I had so much time that slowly I was able to get some music out of myself. I would force myself to write every day. I gave myself a regiment. Once I got a few songs, then I had the confidence to keep going.”
Burch bounced her ideas off her bandmate and boyfriend Dailey Toliver who would contribute guitar parts and orchestration suggestions. The hurricanes kept them locked at home, where they forced themselves to record demos and pump out as much material as possible. Slowly, the album took shape and First Flower became real. When it came time to record, Burch chose to work with Erik Wofford at Cacophony Recorders in Austin.
First Flower is a walk-through Burch’s most intimate thoughts. Unlike Please Be Mine, which focused on the contentious depression of heartbreak, First Flower explores broken friendships, her relationship to her sister, and more importantly, how Burch learned to fight overwhelming anxiety. Burch is a soft-spoken, careful person who shoves her nervousness away on a daily basis.
“I feel like people don’t see me as a nervous person,” Burch says. “They don’t realize how nervous I am. I am good at fighting past my inner anxieties. I struggle with the anticipation of experiences.”
First Flower is a bright, beautiful album peppered with moments of triumph. Burch’s voice is as strong and dexterous as ever, displaying her incredible range and professionalism as a vocalist. Opening track “Candy” is a swinging, playful hit, while “Wild” deals with pushing away fear. Songs like “Next to Me” and “Dangerous Place” examine failure and distance, and the title track “First Flower” is classic Burch, a simple love song that makes your skin raise with goosebumps when she breaks into the chorus. But the album’s true stand-out is “To The Boys”, a courageous, sassy fuck-you to her own self-deprecation where she learns to love all the things she hated about herself. “I don’t need to scream to get my point across/I don’t need to yell to know that I’m the boss,” she coos over a sparse guitar riff. “I’ve always been told my whole life to speak up,” explains Burch. “I needed to embrace that and not care what people think.”
The album closes with “Every Little Thing”, a haunting, airy ballad that sounds like something Judy Garland would have sang while drowning her pain in pills and alcohol. First Flower is a shapely sonic stage to let Burch shine on. The composition and production carefully constructed to compliment and not over power.
“I do not have the answers by any means, but I wanted to talk about those imperfections,” says Burch. “I wouldn’t want someone who listens to my music to think that I have it all figured out. I don’t. First Flower is me being transparent.”
