Exploratory hike Pump Gap
Jan 9 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Ingles Weaverville · Weaverville, NC

I’ve done part of this hike and it’s nice but I haven’t done the Pump Gap section. So I don’t know what this part of the trail is like other than it will be downhill and probably rocky. It should be about 3.5 miles one way but could be more.

This is a car shuttle hike meaning we leave cars at each end of the trail head. The hike is located in the Hot Springs so we could possibly have a meal after (but would be based upon COVID restrictions).

Let’s meet at the Ingles in Weaverville (the one across the street from Publix) at 9:45 with a departure at 10 a.m. Park near the gas station, road side. I have a white Hyundai. Suggested car pool donation is $5 each. If you carpool please wear a mask in the car and bring hand sanitizer.

We will drive out to the trailhead in Hot Springs, leave a car and then drive back up to the other trailhead. This part will involve carpooling so please make sure you are ok with that.

Once hiking, we immediately start uphill and this is one of the hardest parts of the hike but it’s short. We will travel along the AT with a gentle uphill most of the way, but it is scenic.

Eventually we will come to the intersection with the Pump Gap trail and take it back down to the trail head. Who knows what the trail holds? It’s about 1 mile down this section.

Please wear proper hiking shoes, hiking poles are recommended. We won’t be stopping for lunch so bring a snack if you want. Don’t forget the water.

I don’t put attendee limits on my hikes so you don’t have to worry about having a spot. Therefore, you can sign up a day before the hike.

My Big Bad Idea: Trying to CANOE the Grand Canyon; An Online Storytelling w/ Pat Stone
Jan 12 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Online

My Big Bad Idea: Trying to CANOE the Grand Canyon; An Online Storytelling Event with Pat Stone

Join Fairview’s Pat Stone as he spins the frightening, hair-raising, funny (sometimes), and totally spellbinding tale of the time he tried to paddle a canoe down the Colorado River in the glorious, mile-deep Grand Canyon. 14 days, 248 miles, and 96 major rapids—all in the most awe-inspiring spectacle in the 48 states. Pat will take you through the experience so convincingly that you’ll feel like you were there—and, afterwards, be relieved that you weren’t.

Along the way you’ll learn a lot about the weird but wonderful outdoor sport of whitewater paddling, pick up surprising natural lore like the reason creeks run better after the trees lose their leaves, and gain insights into classic local runs like the Rocky Broad (yep, that bony roadside rock jumble right down in Chimney Rock!).

Join OGS for a Tour of Cuba’s Sustainable Farms
Jan 14 all-day
Organic Grower School

Learn from farmers and food activists about Cuba’s transition to agroecological farming practices and its national policies that prioritize organic farming and hunger remediation.

Connect with farmers, consumers, activists, NGOs, policymakers, and experts working to transform the global food system.

Acquire the knowledge and strategies to create just, sustainable, local, and healthy food systems in your own communities.

Agroecology = Agriculture + Ecology

Agroecology is the study of ecological systems as they apply to agriculture. It is a science, a movement, and a practice. At OGS, we like to think of the farm as a system and observe nature as the ideal model of sustainable production.

Agroecological practices strive to incorporate all elements of an agricultural ecosystem—water,

nutrients, soil, plants, and animals—to maximize production and minimize impact. Agroecological methods include the following:

  • Silvopasture = animals in the woods
  • Agroforestry = forest farming
  • Permaculture = systems designed to be sustainable and self-sufficient

Of course, each of these methods has been practiced on every continent since humans have existed, though they are only recently being named and defined by the modern sustainable agriculture community.

During this trip, you will participate in and observe how the Cuban agricultural community has embraced agroecology in all of its forms and learn why Cuba is considered one of the leading global experts in agroecological methods.

Streamkeepers Informational Training Seminar
Jan 28 @ 12:00 pm
Online w/ GreenWorks
Alternate text

Asheville GreenWorks has spent the last 47 years organizing river, creek, and roadside cleanups. We know the sources of pollution and now we have a device that can keep most of it from reaching our river. As this program grows, we need additional support to help us maintain these new devices, manage projects, and keep an eye on our fragile waterways.

It’s time for the community to have a larger say in the health of their waterways.

We will be holding two Zoom introduction meetings on Jan 28thOne at 12pm and the other at 6pm that same day, where we will go over the following topics:

1) Equipment

2) Safety (COVID, SHARPS etc)

3) Point Source Pollution

4) How to clean out the Trash Trout

5) Reporting

6) Cleanups / Restorations

After the introduction meeting you can decide if you want to join in on this program. You can support this local initiative at your own pace. StreamKeepers will receive ongoing training seminars, access to AGW resources and tools, plus special GreenWorks gear.
