10.28.18 // Botanical Distillation with Ash Sierra
Oct 28 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Villagers: Urban Homestead Supply

** Please pre-register on our website **

In this class we will take a look at the ancient art of distilling plants and the medicines they creates, essential oils and hydrosols. Whether you’re wanting to understand these medicines and the process that produces them simply to dive deeper into your herbal journey or you’re looking for an accessible way to craft your own, this class will provide a great beginning foundation. Distillation can be a bit confusing and intimidating on paper, so this class will be visual, tactile and fun! Together we’ll preform a stove-top distillation that can be set-up with items from the kitchen. While that pot’s heating, a traditional copper alembic still will be assembled with its part and other still options discussed along the way. This class will have an emphasize on distilling for hydrosols, a product that’s rapidly gaining popularity. We’ll discuss its gentle, versatile and sustainable medicine, how to craft and decipher a potent hydrosol and why it should have a place in every apothecary. There will be plenty of testers to go around!

$25-45 per person, sliding scale

Ash Sierra is the herbalist, gardener and medicine maker behind Ritual Botanica. The online shop provides small-batch herbal medicine for the body-mind-spirit with a focus on seed-to-bottle offerings, hydrosols and astrological infused healing. Find out more at www.RitualBotanica.com.

Molly Stevens/ Here and Now Tour sponsored by Visit Macon
Oct 28 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Isis Music Hall

Molly Stevens will be coming through Asheville NC to promote her new EP “Here and Now Vol 1”

Molly Stevens is based out of Nashville TN. Stevens grew up in Macon, GA, singing in church and at many revivals led by her grandfather, a celebrated preacher around the Southeast. Growing up in Macon, home to the Allman Brothers and Otis Redding, among others, Stevens never knew a time when southern rock or soul wasn’t floating through the air. “Singing was just always a huge part of my life,” says Stevens. “I’d get off the school bus and my mom would have a dress waiting for me and before I knew it I was headed off to sing at a revival of some kind. That was my childhood. When I was about 10 I played on stage with Johnny and June Cash and didn’t even know who they were at the time! But I love saying I “opened” (wink) for them. ”

ADBC+Fluid Presents LTJ BUKEM
Oct 28 @ 8:00 pm – Oct 29 @ 2:00 am
Sly Grog Lounge

ADBC X FLUID presents

LTJ BUKEM -direct from the uk

Just who is LTJ Bukem? Ground breaking DJ? Inspirational musician? Record label entrepreneur? Club visionary, perhaps? When the man behind those wire rimmed glasses and that disarming smile writes his job description just what does he put? The man who took the drum and bass concept from a small venue off London’s Charing Cross Road to the nation’s superclubs and then onto the international stage? The geezer whose records launched breakbeat into a brand new galaxy of sound? Or maybe he just writes ‘Renaissance man for a digital age’. In truth LTJ Bukem is all of the above. Although he wouldn’t like to admit it, LTJ Bukem is the living embodiment of the post-acid house entrepreneurial creative spirit. He is a mild mannered energy flash whose panoramic musical vision has found success in every area he has explored. From running sound systems to cutting up breaks at raves, from relocating the heart of breakbeat culture to redefining the spirit of drum and bass, the man known to his friends as Danny Williamson has sat at the forefront of breakbeat evolution, lighting the way with little more than a zest for life and a love of music. In other words, LTJ Bukem is a man on a mission!

Reclaimed Creations
Oct 29 @ 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
NC Arboretum

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.

About the Artist

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

A Sense of Place: Interpretations by Kari Morton and Lauren Rutten
Oct 29 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Flow Gallery

Show runs through November 7
Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10am – 4pm

This beautiful exhibit celebrates the works of photographer Lauren Rutten and quilter Kari Morton. What these two artists share in common are a partnership in the five-woman, artist-owned Flow Gallery in historic downtown Marshall, and a deep love of Madison County, their newly chosen home.

In 2015, Lauren and her husband Andy, traveled the US for one year searching for a home. “From the very moment I arrived in Marshall while on this journey, I had a sense of having dreamt of this place since childhood – I knew this was where I wanted to be.

I have found that my life here is not confined within four walls, so I’m very interested in reflections, when the light shines through a structure, or a barn begins to dilapidate so the outside and inside merge.

Marshall finds itself in a season of change. Many families who are moving here to homestead live alongside families who have farmed here for generations. This collection hopes to show the range of those who have come to call Marshall home, as well as the hard reality of homesteading and its immense beauty, which are in direct relationship with each other here. In this land I dig my hands in the earth and muddy my feet on the ground, while at the same time experiencing the transcendence of being and connecting to so much beyond my body. I hope those who view these photos might experience this too.”

Kari and her husband, Mike, moved to Madison County in 2012, after having lived a fairly nomadic life. They decided Madison County was the place to put down roots and call home.

“This collection is inspired by my immediate world, the things I live with and the things I see – the garden in my front yard, the chickens in the back yard, the buildings in downtown Marshall, where I spend many hours working at Flow and serving as a guardian ad litem in the county courthouse. Each of my pieces tell a story of connection, to my community, to my world. I love sharing this part of myself with others.”

Flow Gallery is located on Main Street in the historic, picturesque town of Marshall, which lies along the French Broad River, just 25 minutes north of Asheville, NC. The gallery is in its 8th year of business and showcases the work of over 65 talented, regional artists.

Materia Medica in Clinical Practice

Bioregional herbalism is inspired and shaped by the plant communities that surround us. When these plants become the foundation of herbal practice, our work is grounded in a powerful sense of place that increases the potency of our medicines. In this seminar, three seasoned herbalists share their methods for developing a relationship with local plants such as using your senses (organoleptics), integrating the rhythm of the seasons, and more. We’ll each introduce the ten herbs we consider central to this practice and how we use them, often in ways that you might not expect. You’ll leave this seminar with new understanding of herbs you may already know as well as practical guidelines for expanding your own materia medica using the plants of your bioregion.

In Times of Seismic Sorrows
Oct 29 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition At The Haen Gallery
Oct 29 @ 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The Haen Gallery

The Haen Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, is proud to present their 12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition. The exhibit will run through November.

Lynn Boggess is one of the most unique and noteworthy American landscape painters of the 21st Century. He resides in West Virginia, a state whose diverse mountains, forests, and rivers provide abundant inspiration for the artist’s plein air paintings. In place of brushes he uses palette knives and trowels to thickly layer the broad sweeping strokes and exquisite fine detail that capture all the colors of the seasons in rushing rivers, snow covered hillsides, and thick forest vegetation. Mr. Boggess’ work is recognized internationally for its incredible three-dimensional texture, rendered solely in oils. These remarkable paintings combine elements of Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism to create a style that is totally unique and original.

The Haen Gallery in Asheville is located at 52 Biltmore Avenue between City Bakery and Chestnut. There is a parking garage at the Aloft hotel across the street, another garage just up the hill, as well as street parking.

The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 12-5pm. For more information: 828-254-8577 or www.thehaengallery.com. Gallery contacts: Chris Foley, Director; Leslie Logemann, Gallery Manager.

With locations in Asheville and Brevard, The Haen Gallery offers the work of established artists whose distinctive and unique style sets it apart from ordinary and imitative efforts. Visit the website at thehaengallery.com.
