The Asheville Choral Society presents The Deepness of the Blue, a concert featuring the poetry and musical compositions of African-American composers. We will feature guest musicians and soloists, in addition to more than 100 ACS singers.
This concert’s music includes beautiful melodies, driving rhythms and powerful messages – an evening of engaging music that highlights underrepresented artists and composers of color. The central piece on the program is William Averitt’s Deepness of the Blue, a 5-movement setting of Langston Hughes’ moving texts on love and the struggle of the human experience. Other selections include Rosephanye Powell’s The Word was God, Anthony Trecek-King’s (current conductor of the Boston Children’s Choir) I’m Building Me a Home and the gorgeous Harry T. Burleigh arrangement of Deep River.
Unapologetically Alabama. There’s a new force making major waves in country music. Natives of Mobile Alabama, Gary Stanton and Charlie Muncaster came together to form Muscadine Bloodline in early 2016. With three single releases under their belt and a schedule full of shows spanning from coast to coast, they’ve hit the ground running from day 1. Nashville took notice the first time these two stepped on the stage and it’s no surprise the rest of the music world is quickly catching on. Charlie’s [contemporary] vocals complimented by Gary’s harmonies and masterful guitar licks, MB is a powerfully refreshing mix of talent, passion and unfiltered authenticity. Infamously undaunted by the big stage, their sound intertwines the brash irreverence of early southern rockers with the seductive quality of 90s country love songs. Captivating hooks heard in songs like “Porch Swing Angel” and the aggressively anthemic “Shut Your Mouth” stand as a testament to MB’s wide ranging music-making capability. Every song and every show is a moving experience but at the same time, unmistakably Muscadine Bloodline.

The Garcia Project will perform a full, classic Jerry Garcia Band show setlist!
The Garcia Project is the only nationally touring Jerry Garcia Band tribute that performs full, classic Jerry Band set lists from 1976-1995. We have been called by many, “the DSO of JGB”. With proper, era-specific equipment and arrangements, The Garcia Project brings the fans back in time to relive the classic Jerry Garcia Band concerts in their entirety.
“I spent a lot of nights in a lot of places with the Jerry Garcia Band, and I’m here to say that I really enjoy what The Garcia Project does with those memories. Mik’s guitar and his and Kat’s vocals stir up some very sweet vibes…some times they almost make me feel like I’m back in, say, 1992 at the Warfield. Check ‘em out.”
— Dennis McNally, former publicist for the Jerry Garcia Band

The Collider hosts a monthly climate and environmental film series, open to the public. This month, along with photo+sphere, we will present The Human Element. Emmy award-winning filmmaker and National Geographic photographer James Balog’s new film is structured around the four elements – earth, air, fire and water – and adds a fifth: the human element. His visually stunning images reveal how environmental problems are affecting the lives of average Americans and reminds us that people can destroy as well as solve our current environmental crisis.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with refreshments provided. The screening begins at 7 p.m.
The same evening, in The Collider’s Overlook Lounge, there will be special installation of Collapse the Distance, a multimedia storytelling project by Mattea Mrkusic and Canyon and Forest Woodward, two brothers from Western North Carolina. Collapse the Distance was recently shown at The Collider’s 2018 ClimateCon conference on the business of climate, and has been exhibited at the Telluride Mountain Film Festival and both Harvard and Yale Universities.

Christmas Jam Session Ale 2018-
From the opening chord to the final encore, this hop-heavy beer is the perfect match for an all-night party. Brewed for Asheville’s one-of-a-kind musical marvel, the annual Christmas Jam, this session ale features bright hop flavors of citrus and stone fruit with just a hint of piney hop character–all in a well-balanced and easy-going package, just right for jam-worthy drinkability.
Selwyn Birchwood-
“With his fiery guitar and lap steel playing, his trailblazing, instantly memorable songs and gritty, unvarnished vocals, Birchwood is among the most extraordinary young stars in the blues. His deep familiarity with blues tradition allows him to bust the genre wide open, adding new sounds, colors and textures, all delivered with a revival tent preacher’s fervor and a natural storyteller’s charisma.”
Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity-
“Safe and decent housing provides families an opportunity for stability, security and personal and professional advancement. Yes, we build houses and help preserve existing homes, but we also change lives.”
