Asheville’s biggest culinary event celebrates 10 years of bold flavors and palate pleasers.
The Asheville Independent Restaurant Association (AIR) hosts the 2018 Taste of
Asheville: Taste & Tunes Thursday, Nov. 15 at The Venue in downtown Asheville.
From award-winning southern cuisine to bold new worldly flavors, the Taste of Asheville
brings over 40 of Asheville’s famed independent restaurants together for an
unforgettable evening of sampling small bites, craft beverages and spirits.
This year, AIR has once again teamed up with the Asheville Buskers Collective to
highlight the city’s celebrated street musicians.
This event not only entertains the taste buds, it also is one of the largest fundraisers of
the year to support the work of the AIR, which in turn supports the 120 members of the
Asheville Independent Restaurant Association.
VIP tickets (early admission) are $100; general admission tickets are $75. All tickets may be purchased at www.airasheville.org.

The Retrocade is hosting a benefit for Our VOICE, Buncombe County’s sexual assault prevention and crisis intervention center.
Come play classic arcade games, drink a beer, and support an amazing cause! Half of your entry wristband will be donated to Our VOICE. There will also be a raffle for two super cool paintings by local artists. We look forward to seeing you there!

TRYON, NC – Gather your Krewe! The Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce will present a Mardi Gras Extravaganza from 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturday March 2, 2019, at the Harmon Field air gym.
There will be music, dancing and a warm bon fire to keep you going all night! All-You-Can-Eat & Drink, consisting of oysters roasted over an open fire, shrimp, mussels, crawdads, low country boil, barbecue chicken wings, authentic gumbo, coleslaw, rolls, iced tea, coffee, King Cakes and a great selection of draft beers and wine.
Time to get creative, a proper Mardi Gras event has the best masks, so bring yours to be entered to win the Most Unique Mask contest. Masks provide an element of mystery-who will be the lucky winner?

The Literacy Council of Buncombe County will hold “Beauty and the Bee,” an adult Spelling Bee, on April 3, 2019 at The Mothlight in West Asheville. Beginning at 6 pm, fifteen teams of three adults each will compete in the themed, spirited, and zany word challenge.
While the word list is challenging to even the most advanced spellers, this event is not a traditional, stilted spelling bee. Audience members are encouraged to cheer on their favorite teams and can even purchase opportunities to cheat on the spellers’ behalf. Spellers and audience members are encouraged to wear costumes in homage to this year’s beauty-pageant event theme: Beauty and the Bee.
Spelling Bee teams are fielded by local businesses, non-profits, community associations, colleges, book clubs and friends. This year’s teams include the 2018 winning team, Malaprop’s Bookstore/Café; the 2017 highest fundraising team, Chestnut/Corner Kitchen; and more.
Funds raised by the Beauty and the Bee Spelling Bee support the Literacy Council of Buncombe County’s programs that provide basic literacy and English language services to 2,200 people in Buncombe County.

Asheville GreenWorks 2nd annual Environmental Excellence Awards & Trashion Show featuring over 20 local designers strutting their one of a kind eco-fashion designs down the runway. VIP tickets get an open bar, front row seating and a VIP meet and greet.
Growing up gay in Fargo, North Dakota was never easy, but it did provide Drew with an abundance of material to sling off about his family, sex education, the big move to NYC, and what it means to be “Midwest nice.” He hosts two monthly shows at West Side Comedy Club in NYC, “Bottomless” and “Homo You Didn’t,” and just premiered a third, “Haus Party,” at Chelsea Music Hall. He’s performed at West Side Comedy Club, Gotham Comedy Club, Broadway Comedy Club, and Greenwich Village Comedy Club in NYC, and recently made his international debut at “The Comedy Mix” in Vancouver. When Drew’s not fighting the police with tap shoes, his “easy confidence and stage presence” has been likened to “being on a dinner date that’s going really well.” (Theatre Jones,TX). Geoff Tate is most likely watching “Cheers” right now. A Cincinnati-based comedian, he has appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and regularly tours with Doug Benson and Doug Stanhope. He made his television debut on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, and is a regular on Doug Loves Movies, as well as Getting Doug with High. He has performed at music and comedy festivals like Bonnaroo, South by Southwest, Limestone and he has two albums available at the Doug Stanhope store and he’s the host of the popular geofftate’s MSHD PODCASTO, in which he discusses topical Cheers-related issues, gets his dad to try things, talks to people he graduated with, forces Emma Arnold to host her own show and just has a good time.

South Carolina singer-songwriter Lang Owen performs Thursday, May 23 at Odd’s Cafe in Asheville, North Carolina, from 7 to 9 p.m. Music writer Kevin Oliver (Free-Times, Columbia) describes Owen as “a gifted songwriter … with songs that evoke classic ’70s storytelling artists such as Harry Chapin, Paul Simon, or Fred Neil, painting pictures with a voice and guitar … .” Owen, playing a Martin acoustic guitar, will sing all original songs with lyrics that offer intimate perspectives of everyday people and places. Odd’s Cafe is located at 800 Haywood Road in Asheville; no cover.
In June, Owen will sing at the Sentient Bean in Savannah, Georgia. Recent shows in the Columbia, SC-area include opening for North Carolina native musician Jonathan Byrd at the Tree of Life Coffeehouse, and solo performances at The White Mule music venue, Deckle Edge Literary Festival, among many other weekly performances at Columbia-area music venues. Owen also periodically performs with the Two Hats and a Ponytail trio, which features Owen’s music and the poetry of Tim Conroy and Al Black.

Paul Ollinger is a nationally-touring comedian, podcaster and corporate refugee. After 15 years selling advertising for companies like Yahoo! and Facebook, Paul launched the comedy career that has taken him all over North America, opening for legends like Norm Macdonald, Dave Attell, Daniel Tosh and Roseanne Barr. He has performed in the Laughing Skull, Asheville, Cleveland, DC, and North Carolina comedy festivals. Earlier this year, he headlined the legendary Carolines on Broadway in New York City. Paul is the host of the Crazy Money podcast in which he interviews celebrities, authors, and everyday people to find out how they think about money. He lives in Atlanta with his wife and two kids.
