While death is often a taboo topic of conversation, it is inevitable for all of us. A series of award-winning films dealing with end-of-life issues will be shown at Pack Memorial Library on Fridays from October 20 through December 8 from 2:00-5:00 PM. The program is designed to help people better understand and become more comfortable talking about — and perhaps shifting their perspective on — end-of-life experiences.
Each film will be followed by in-depth, thought-provoking, and death-positive discussions moderated by Gail Harris, National Emmy Award-winning journalist for PBS and NPR and former correspondent for ABC News Nightline and World News Tonight. These six exceptional films by new and established filmmakers, animators, and actors about death and dying are entertaining and inspiring. Potential discussion topics will include legacy, the spiritual side of death, alternative ways to die, preparedness, facing fear, and finding courage.

Join us on the evening of Friday, November 17 from 5-7pm ET to celebrate the opening of three new exhibitions and have the opportunity to hear from our featured artists. This opening reception celebrates the culmination of each exhibition: Hammer and Hope, Preservers, Innovators, and Rescuers of Culture in Chiapas, and Connections in the Making.

Every Friday Modelface Comedy brings you the best comedians from all over the country.
GILBERT LAWAND is a Brooklyn based comedian by way of Atlanta. You can see him performing all over the New York City area at some of the best shows such as Night Train, the Knitting Factory, and Bar Matchless as well as comedy clubs like Caroline’s, Gotham, New York Comedy Club, and the Creek and the Cave. He also produces the annual Red Clay Comedy Festival which takes place in Atlanta every September. Gilbert has performed in several festivals including Bridgetown, High Plains, and the Laughing Skull Festival where he was a finalist in 2015. He’s a frequent opener for Rory Scovel and has also opened for Dave Chappelle.

Artsville Collective proudly presents the Virtual Gallery of Artists (VGA) program,
an initiative designed to help elevate the careers of local artists. VGA offers artists a unique
opportunity to gain global exposure, valuable marketing skills, and an array of promotional
resources. The VGA program invites individual artists to apply for three months of marketing
exposure through print, digital, and podcast platforms. Artsville provides guidance on building
relationships with the press and art buyers, empowering artists by coming alongside them and
forming connections. Notably, Artsville does not take any commissions on art sales, ensuring
artists keep their full earnings.
Nine artists introduced in first cohort from Oct- Jan include a carefully curated group
showing diversity in age, mediums, experience and exposure in the art markets so they may also
learn from each other. Meet Amy Massey, Candice Hensley, Elizabeth Walton, Georgia Deal,
Jean McLaughlin, Joseph Pearson, Max Cooper, Selene Plum, and Wendy Newman.
Accessible only online, Artsville’s VGA also provides VGA artists a comprehensive toolkit,
including newsletters, podcasts, discussion groups, and learning programs. Committed artists
who actively participate can earn recognition and further opportunities, such as involvement in
Artsville events, pop-up exhibits, and networking groups. In preparation for the holiday season,
Artsville will also present a curated holiday catalog of handmade gifts, offering a unique
opportunity for VGA participants to showcase their work to a wider audience.

The Asheville Art Museum is excited to be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year! Over the past seven and a half decades, the Museum has served as the hub for artistic inspiration and education in Western North Carolina, bringing together artists and art enthusiasts from all walks of life.

We enjoyed our visit and are grateful for the opportunity that the Asheville Art Museum provided our students!”

Buncombe County Special Collections is excited to announce a call for proposals for the third year of its creative residency program.
This is an annual opportunity for artists in Buncombe County to create new, research-driven creative work using BCSC’s historic resources as source material and/or inspiration, and to present their work in the Carolina Record Shop, a dedicated exhibition space in the BCSC reading room. Artists age 18 and up, based in Buncombe County, working in any creative discipline are invited to apply.
Buncombe County Special Collections is looking for projects that will:
- Offer new, diverse perspectives on our shared history
- Identify and address gaps and/or amplify narratives that are historically underrepresented in the collection
- Educate and inspire non-traditional users of archives and special collections to engage with the collection in new ways.

Did you know you could take a course in the Cherokee language for free with your library card?
Buncombe County Public Libraries offers access to Transparent Languages for online language instruction from home computers, laptops and mobile devices. To log in, your ID is your library card number and your PIN is the last four digits of your phone number.
Transparent Languages partners with 7,000 Languages, a nonprofit organization working to empower communities around the world to sustain their endangered languages. As a result of this collaboration, the library can offer free instructional courses for over 25 indigenous languages, including Cherokee.
Cherokee is spoken by about 2,000 people mainly in Western North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. 7,000 Languages partnered with the Cherokee PINS Project Foundation to create two beginner Cherokee courses. The Cherokee Alphabet Course teaches the shapes, names, and pronunciation of the Cherokee syllabary. The Cherokee Beginner Course introduces learners to a common, practical language that they can hear, write, and speak throughout the course. Language learners can practice their listening and speaking skills with voice recognition software guided by native speakers.
Both of these courses, along with hundreds of other language courses, are available free with your library card. If you have any questions, let us know.
It’s November again and that can only mean one thing: National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)!
NaNoWriMo began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel during the thirty days of November. Now, each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand-new novel.
If you are doing NaNoWriMo this year, the Buncombe County Public Libraries are here to help! Several branches will be hosting “Write-ins” throughout the month of November, offering quiet spaces for writers to come chip away at their word count. Each Write-in will have its own unique spin (snacks, ambient music, writing prompts, local author hosts, etc.), so please check the library event calendar for specific details.
In addition to the Write-Ins, a NaNoWriMo Wrap Party will be held at rEvolve Mercantile on Wednesday, December 6th from 6pm – 8pm. All NaNoWriMo participants are invited to join us for food, activities, prize raffles , and “micro mic” readings that will give each writer a chance to share a paragraph or two from their novel.

More than half a million low-income, uninsured North Carolinians will gain access to comprehensive health coverage when Medicaid expansion launches on December 1, 2023.

Every year, Buncombe County hosts an Adult Wish Tree and a Foster Care Wish Tree that allows members of the community to sponsor a gift for someone this holiday.

Each year, children in foster care in Buncombe County submit a list of wishes they would like for the holidays.

Adult Wish Tree
When you can’t drive a car or don’t have someone to bring you the things you might need, like a new nightgown or socks, it can be tough. The Adult Wish Tree is a Buncombe County program that works with agencies throughout the county to identify adults and adults with disabilities who don’t have access to a support network to help with these basic needs. The program also identifies young adults in our extended foster care program who will likely not receive a gift this year. Please consider selecting an adult to sponsor this holiday season.

Each year, one week before Thanksgiving, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness partner together to sponsor National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Occurring this year during the week of Nov. 11-18 more than 700 colleges, high schools, and community groups across the country will come together to provide education, draw attention to the issues of hunger and homelessness, and recruit volunteers and supporters for local agencies supporting those experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. Our community will also be holding a variety of events to highlight partnerships between agencies working to address these issues, as well as provide education and opportunities to support these organizations and the individuals they serve.
Why is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week important? The National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH), analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to determine that homelessness has been on the rise since 2017, increasing overall by 6% since then. In 2022, counts of individuals experiencing homelessness reached record highs, with HUD counting around 582,000 Americans experiencing homelessness last year. HUD’s definition of homelessness includes both sheltered and unsheltered individuals. Sheltered homelessness includes people who are living in domestic violence shelters, transitional shelters, safe havens that serve homeless individuals with severe mental illness, or hotels/motels. Unsheltered individuals may be living outdoors, in cars, abandoned buildings, or in other places not meant for human habitation. Concerningly, rates of unsheltered homelessness across the nation are also trending upward, with most racial, ethnic, and gender subgroups disproportionately impacted. Moreover, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that an estimated 17 million families, or 1 in 8 U.S. Households, experienced food insecurity at some point in 2022 and here too, data demonstrates that rates of food insecurity are significantly higher for racial, ethnic, and gender subgroups. The American College of Physicians reported in 2022 that food insecurity has become a threat to public health in America.
In our community, the Point-In-Time (PIT) count is conducted annually to get a snapshot count of individuals experiencing sheltered and unsheltered homelessness. Conducted on a single night in January each year, the PIT count is conducted by communities nationwide, and is intended to be an unduplicated count of people experiencing homelessness within the community. Our most recent PIT count was conducted on Jan. 31, 2023, and showed that there are around 402 sheltered and 171 unsheltered individuals experiencing homelessness here.While this is slightly lower than last year’s count, this total of 573 unhoused individuals is still significantly higher than pre-pandemic counts. Additionally, in our area, more than 8 in 10 children experience poverty, and 1 in 4 children in Western North Carolina do not have access to three square meals daily.
National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week represents a time when we can come together as a community to share knowledge and identify resources to end hunger and homelessness. It invites us to consider joining efforts to help people in immediate need, and to take part in identifying and supporting long-term solutions. Haywood Street Congregation, a local urban ministry, will be highlighting collaboration between service agencies, faith communities, the County, and the City throughout the week of Nov. 11-18 with a variety of events ranging from the Homelessness Learning Series provided by the City of Asheville, volunteer trainings for Code Purple and ABCCM’s Transformation Village, and tours of the Haywood Street Congregation Campus and Homeward Bound’s Permanent Supportive Housing Project, Compass Point Village.
Other notable events include Lunch at the Crossroads at First Baptist Church of Asheville on Thursday, Nov. 16, and an awareness gathering facilitated by the Buncombe County Homeless Coalition at New Belgium Brewing on Sunday, Nov. 19. event will feature new art work created by five Voorhees family members along with two guest artists.
The event will again be featured in a family home, this year at Susan Voorhees’ house. Meet this

The arts legacy began with Edwin Voorhees, (1919-1999) and Mildred Voorhees (1924-2007) both
accomplished painters and well known throughout NC for their artwork. The first Voorhees Family Art
Show was held in the family home in Morehead City in 1998. Edwin passed away the next year but the
Voorhees Family Art Show continued in Morehead for several years. With Mildred’s move to Asheville
the show followed with it being hosted in one of several Voorhees family homes in North Asheville
ever since. The Voorhees Family was recognized with an exhibition “Nature & Nurture: The Voorhees
Family Artistic Legacy” at the NC Arboretum during the summer of 2022.
This year’s show celebrates the 26th show for the Voorhees Family and continues the legacy begun by
Edwin Voorhees back in 1998. Three of Edwin and Mildred’s six children a daughter-in-law, and
David’s son-in-law will be showing their work at this event: Susan Voorhees, oil and pastel paintings;
Jane Voorhees, watercolors, prints, cards and calendars; David Voorhees, wood-fired stoneware and
porcelain pottery; David’s wife, Molly Sharp Voorhees, sterling silver and gold jewelry. David’s son-in-
law, James Becker with resin art creations. Also exhibiting are guest artists Cheryl Stippich, stained
glass and polymer clay, and Chad Alice Hagen, felted art and handmade books. For more information

two locations for all Buncombe County residents. This organic matter will be collected and turned into good clean compost, keeping it OUT of our landfill and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
