Bats are amazing creatures that are vital to the health of our natural world and economy. Although we may not always see them, bats are hard at work – eating insects, pollinating flowers, and spreading seeds that grow new plants and trees. Join Kyle Shute, SAHC Land Protection Associate, as he discusses the general ecology, behaviors and habitats, and conservation issues of bats in our region. Hear what SAHC is doing to protect the bat population in our region and what you can do to help protect our vital bat populations!

Kids have great imaginations – this is the place to let it loose! Our youngest students will learn to bring fun stories and characters to life. In this class, students will learn the basics of improv with techniques designed to get them comfortable with performing, quick thinking, and being present on stage. They’ll be laughing and learning with fun games, warm-ups, “Yes And” exercises, and a showcase for family and friends during the last class.

1. Tatia Adams-Fox, The New School of Etiquette

This fun and high-energy class combines the three fundamentals of musical theatre which include acting,
singing, and dance! With a focus on singing, musicality, movement, and storytelling, students will learn new
skills and make new friends. A sharing will take place at the end of the session. No prior experience is
necessary

In this eight-week semester, young artists will learn to create dynamic relationships through theatre games,
improvisation, scene work, music, and dance. With an emphasis on ensemble storytelling, character creation,
physicality, and voice and speech, students will leave feeling more collaborative, creative, and confident
making bold choices on stage and in life. Apply your skills in an informal showcase for friends and family at the
end of the session. No prior experience is necessary, only an open mind!

Join host and Malaprop’s Bookseller Allison to dive into the wreck of the wily and wonderful world of science fiction, fantasy, weird fiction, speculative fiction, and literary horror with a healthy mix of underappreciated classic and contemporary books. Meets the last Monday of every month at 7 pm on Zoom. We are seeking volunteers to assist us in our small after school program for children in West Asheville in low-income housing.  We provide a safe and nourishing environment, healthy snacks, and creative activities.  Our program currently meets during the school year on most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00-5:00pm. You may volunteer for one or two days a week. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Assist with serving snacks
• Interact with children during activity time
• Supervise games and outdoor free time
• For people with background in education, there is also an opportunity to assist with curriculum development and program planning and administration

Requirements:

• Background check
• Orientation booklets will be provided
• Masks are required if unvaccinated

In this class designed for beginners and younger performers, students will learn basic acting techniques and have a great time doing so! They’ll get creative with short scenes and play drama games that teach key skills in a fun and approachable way. This class builds the confidence to help them to shine on stage and in life –  even in their next audition or school play! Students will perform a showcase for family and friends during the last class.

In this collegiate-style class, teen artists will learn from industry experts in a combination of acting and musical
theatre training, stage combat, scene work, monologue work and more! Each week will be a new Master Class
taught by local professional theatre artists. This session is ideal for students who are passionate about theatre,
excited to collaborate in a pre-professional environment with peers and industry experts, and looking to grow
and develop as artists. Space is limited.

Both require practice and patience with the medium and with ourselves, but we all start somewhere, and there’s not a better time to try than now! In this four-hour workshop intensive, Ben Kirkland, bonsai artist, creator of the popular YouTube channel Appalachian Bonsai, and a professor of design at Virginia Tech, is a knowledgeable and encouraging guide to help you dispel fears and think like a designer.

With the Bonsai Exhibition Garden as the perfect setting, participants will learn a variety of sketching techniques to assist in the development of bonsai design as well as learn aspects of tree growth. Designed to assist the artist within; all levels, novices and experts alike, will benefit from this artful approach.

Malaprop’s Book Club

This class is designed for curious young performers eager to explore the “FUN”-damentals of acting, singing,
and dancing. Through high-energy theatre games, improvisation, pantomime, storytelling, & ensemble-based
activities, students will hone their theatre and musical theatre skills. They will build meaningful connections with
other young artists, and discover their creative potential! In the final class, showcase what you learned in an
informal performance for friends and family.
