arth Skin is based upon the forms and textures of the earth using inspiration from aerial photography of Western North Carolina and topographical maps of local areas, including Pisgah National Forest and Balsam Range. Created by ceramic artists Trish Salmon and Crystal Allen, Earth Skin includes wall structures and pieces designed for mantles, shelves and tables. All works are available for purchase and a portion of the sales will be donated to The North Carolina Arboretum Society.
About the Artists
Trish Salmon
Trish has been studying clay for many years through the various classes available to her when she lived in the Atlanta area. Taking classes at Penland was a life changing experience and a turning point in her desire to become a studio ceramicist. She and her husband moved to Western North Carolina in 2007, and she has pursued her claywork full time after her career as a kitchen designer. Immediately after retirement, she enrolled in Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts Program in clay where she received her Associate’s Degree in 2014. She currently is a member of the Odyssey Coop Gallery in the River Arts District in Asheville, NC. She is also a founding member of Artisans on Main in downtown Weaverville where her studio is and where her work is primarily displayed.
Crystal Allen
Before discovering ceramics, Crystal earned a degree in Graphic Art and Design. She has also taught calligraphy, dabbled in watercolors and and learned how to felt, dye and spin natural fibers from her own llamas and sheep. Most recently, Crystal completed the Professional Crafts: Clay Associates degree at Haywood Community College. Her pottery is primarily functional, with altered or hand built additions. Her pieces are produced in her studio, one of her favorite places on earth!

“Bright & Bold”
“Bright & Bold” for July at Asheville Gallery of Art
Asheville Gallery of Art’s July show, “Bright & Bold,” will feature the work of Bee Adams, whose dynamic, colorful paintings simultaneously tease and delight the eye. The show runs July 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, July 6, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by.
From iconic local landmarks to tobacco barns, florals, and abstracts, the artist creates signature works that are masterfully executed in exuberant colors. “I do love color and use it freely in my paintings. I like keeping my paintings fresh and exciting and use a variety of mediums in that process,” she says. Whatever her subject, she is fearless in her interpretations. “My paintings aren’t careful architectural renderings, but vibrant celebrations that allow the viewer to encounter the familiar anew.”
Prior to relocating to Asheville six years ago, Bee was active in the Denver art scene for over 40 years, including solo showings at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder. She also lived in Brussels where she “took particular joy in capturing the intricate buildings throughout Europe with quick sketches.” Bee’s work currently can be found at Asheville Gallery of Art and at Chiesa Restaurant, 152 Montford Ave, Asheville. She also welcomes scheduled visits to her studio in East Asheville.
Adams’ work, as well as the paintings of the other 30 gallery members will be on display and for sale through the month of July. Montford Park Players, an Asheville theatrical tradition, is proud announce their upcoming production of the locally-penned Robin Hood, the Legend of Sherwood. All performances will be held at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in the heart of Asheville’s historic Montford District, from July 6th through August 4th on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30pm. This performance like ALL of Montford Park Players’ shows will be absolutely FREE to attend.
The show will contain all swordplay, romance and humor we’ve come to expect from film and book versions of the legend over the years. Families are most welcome to this show and kids, in particular, will be enthralled with all of the action.
Director Michael Lilly, is a first-time director at Montford, despite helming productions all over Western North Carolina. In his career, Lilly has staged over 150 different shows, but is thrilled to be directing this show, due to a particular love of the source material. “Every time another Super Hero movie comes out,” says Lilly, “it’s just another version of Robin Hood.”
Montford Park Players has never performed Robin Hood before, and, in fact, it may be the first, full outdoor staging of the story in play form. Says Director Lilly, “The Hazel Robinson is the perfect venue for it. And just like the epic films, there is a cast of thousands!”
The play will be directed by Michael Lilly, with Robin Hood played by local actor, Ryan Martin, with an all-star cast of locals at his side: Julianne Arnall as Maid Marian, George Heard as Friar Tuck, Travis Kelley as Little John and David Mycoff as the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham. In all, over thirty talented actors will take the stage to make this show as epic as everyone expects.

For the seventh consecutive year, the Asheville Habitat ReStore at 31 Meadow Road near Biltmore Village is encouraging residents to show off their creativity and talent for a chance to win in the ReStore ReUse Contest. Garden shed, artist studio, chicken coop…tree house, playhouse, tiny house…if you recently built a structure like this using predominantly reused building materials, Habitat wants to know. The contest runs July 1-August 31 and submissions must be sent electronically. Information and entry form will be available on ashevillehabitat.org starting July 1 st . The purpose of the contest is to showcase innovative building projects constructed predominantly of used building materials. “Our customers often tell us about the projects they make using materials purchased at the ReStore. This contest is a great way to showcase their projects and inspire others to reuse, recycle and repurpose usable materials,” said Scott Stetson, ReStore General Manager. Five judges will select winners in the following categories: Furniture, Homesteading, Live and/or Work Space, Home Décor, Youth (age 16 and under), and Best in Show. Winners will be announced in mid-September.
Based on the iconic animated film, with an Academy Award-winning score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, Disney’s Aladdin Jr. is sure to send audiences soaring on a flying carpet ride filled with romance and adventure.

While having school supplies may simply be an item on the ‘to-do’ list for many parents and guardians, for others, the calculator that their child needs, or a backpack without last year’s broken zippers, may not be in the cards.

By highlighting these and other works, Brevard Music Center is presenting some of Bernstein’s greatest output and showing a wonderful variety of his music that is at the core of American classical music experience. We spend so much time celebrating the works of European masters like Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler, and Dvôrak. And those works all deserve to be celebrated. But they must stand alongside Bernstein, Copland, and Gershwin—these masters gave American classical music its voice.
It’s wonderful for Brevard to be joining in with orchestras and institutions all around the world in celebrating the birth of one of the most compelling musicians of our time…or any other time.
