Bencoolen at Sierra Nevada
May 4 @ 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

Rock. Blues. Funk. Shred. Sax. A few words that may come to mind when Bencoolen fills the airwaves.

The maximalist rock band achieves their bold, signature sound by weaving blues, funk and soul through songs, teetering on the edge of mainstream pop and rock. Featuring soaring vocals, swift saxophone lines, and massive guitar tones, the band was started in 2014 by college friends Paul Gregg and Teddy Scott. As time has progressed, the focus of the band shifted from a hobby to a lifestyle, catalyzed by lineup changes, rediscovery, and unrelenting inspiration. The lineup rounded out by mid-2016 with Ben Suarez joining on bass, Jack Bentsen on saxophone, and Will “Willy Pipes” Lockery on drums and backup vocals.

The early days of a band are often painted poetically. Artists face lengthy struggles to be heard, turbulent lives on the road, and uncertainty. They also experience grand adventures, beautiful stages, and meet wonderful people few others find. This journey is embraced by the five-piece of Bencoolen and they play on, writing their first chapters, riding in a caravan up and down the coast from sunny Savannah and to New York’s metropolis. They rapidly dance between highs and lows. A van stuck in the mud, an encore in a college town, a festival stage among a lineup of legends, and a lonely night at the dive. Song ideas sprout up from it all, sax solos fill the night, and ripping guitars stun a passerby with an adrenaline rush.

Bencoolen’s sound has dazzled crowds, and their determination continues to bring them to new venues. In fact, Bencoolen grabbed a hometown sell out show in Washington DC in September 2018. They have supported tours for Mihali of Twiddle, Marcus King, Spafford, Mungion, Atlas Road Crew, Mondo Cozmo, and Big Something, to name a few. They also have landed major festival slots at Firefly Music Festival in 2017 and at Musikfest in 2018.

The group welcomes their formal debut album, Daydream, this March. The record cycles through genres seamlessly, from pop to funk to rock, capturing the genre-bending spectacle now expected out of their live performance. The record is headlined by “Tonight,” “Roll On,” and “Daydream” where listeners are enveloped in steady pulses, swaggering leads, and confident vocal performances. The release was made possible by the generosity of Dragon’s Lair Studios and producer Addison Smith’s touch behind the controls. It was captured in a cabin tucked away in the lush hills of West Virginia.

Self-managed and self-booked, Bencoolen is proud of their first full-length project and plans to tackle their biggest tour to date this Spring.

The Blibbering Humdingers Live at Triskelion
May 4 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Triskelion Brewing Company

The Blibbering Humdingers have agreed to come play some Star Wars songs (among other songs related to nerd/geek culture) for us on Star Wars Day!

Here’s a bit about them from their website:

Neo-retro existential wizard nerd pop with a dash of do-wop, a sprinkle of steampunk and nibble of new wave. A “sound” you ask? Genre? Pishaw! We don’t have a sound other than laughter and the sound of magic and the sound of one hand clapping because your other arm has been gnawed off by piranhas.

These magical masters of musical hi-jinx and mayhem will wizard rock the tea towel right off your house elf! They draw inspiration from the Harry Potter series, Dr Who, the SCA, medieval fantasy, science fiction and all kinds of delightfully, geeky fandomness.

Scott & Kirsten Vaughan began performing together in 1992 in the SCA, where they are known as Master Efenwealt Wystle and Maîtresse Aénor d’Anjou. With the release of ‘Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows’ in 2007, and upon encountering bands like Draco & the Malfoys, The Mudbloods, and The Moaning Myrtles they decided to form their own wizard rock act. They live in Cary, NC (under the name Sanderz) with two kids and a cat named Rosemerta. (That’s the cat’s name. It would just be silly to give both our kids the same name as the cat!)

They mostly perform at at Harry Potter, Filk and SciFi/Fantasy conventions along the east coast but also do libraries, bars and private parties. Some of the bigger shows they’ve played include Portus, ConCarolinas, LeakyCon, Infinitus, MarsCon, Ohio Valley Filk Festival, GA-Filk, Dragon*Con the Quidditch World Cup, the NYC Wizard Rock Festival, Wrockstock and LeakyCon London in 2013 (what a thrill!). Anybody want to bring them to Seattle? San Diego? LA? Germany perhaps?

Jerry Garcia Band Cover Band (JGBCB)
May 4 @ 9:00 pm – May 5 @ 1:00 am

JGBCB

Formed in Athens, GA in 2012, JGBCB has been filling a hole in the Grateful Dead scene by offering up spirited covers of classic songs pulled exclusively from the repertoire of the Jerry Garcia Band, Garcia’s long-running side-project. JGBCB has played shows from Key West to Colorado, exciting audiences with performances of beloved Garcia tunes not found within the traditional Grateful Dead catalog.

The Jerry Garcia Band (famously known to Dead Heads as “JGB”) was as much a songwriting outlet for Garcia as it was a chance for him to cover the music he loved. With Jerry and bassist John Kahn as the band’s staples (playing together as far back as 1970), a varied set of keyboardists, drummers, and backup singers filled out the lineup over the years, each bringing their own unique character to the band. Over the course of it’s existence, JGB played a number of diverse musical styles, covering artists such as The Beatles, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Band, Jimmy Cliff, Smoky Robinson, The Rolling Stones, the Wailers, J.J. Cale, and Ray Charles. The list goes on and on, recalling the names of rock, soul, and folk royalty.

It is with a deep love of Jerry Garcia’s music and the music that he loved that the members of JGBCB approach this project. The band came together for a single show in December 2012, which led to a local weekly residency in Athens. The positive response they received ultimately led JGBCB to tour around the country, giving fans all over a taste of the music of the Jerry Garcia Band. Count on hearing different material from night to night, consisting of JGB staples and deep cuts. How sweet it is!

The Crystal Method

Throughout the past two decades, the musical landscape has continually merged, morphed, and matrixed, fractured in countless directions while intersecting at the most unexpected points. Electronic music underwent a renaissance in the aughts, rising out of the warehouses and blank spaces and overtaking the biggest festival fields in the world. THE CRYSTAL METHOD followed a similar trajectory since their formation in 1993. The Grammy Award®-nominated, platinum-certified trailblazing duo—Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland—set the stage for the genre-mashing electronic sounds that fuel the current zeitgeist.
