Guests will be required to demonstrate proficiency in zip lining including breaking.

Looking for a way to make a real impact this spring and summer? Feed people while pursuing your passion through Outpace Hunger, an action-based fundraising campaign that turns a favorite activity into meals!

For decades, MANNA FoodBank has been working to outpace hunger and food insecurity all across 16 counties of Western North Carolina, including the Qualla Boundary. The 2022 campaign runs May 1 through September 30, and we invite you join the growing community of folks who are Outpacing Hunger alongside of us!

How It Works

Participating in Outpace Hunger is easy!

You decide your level of commitment, so every participant can create their own path to helping provide food to our community. Participants also decide how, when, and where they complete their goal, any time now through the campaign end on September 30.

Outpace Hunger participants:

(1) Register to be a part of MANNA’s Outpace Hunger community. The $20 registration fee includes a t-shirt for you and provides 80 MEALS for neighbors facing food insecurity in WNC.

(2) Choose a favorite activity (run, walk, roll, stroll, hike, bike, paddle, climb, float, skate, golf, and everything in between!) to complete individually, or as a family/group/team.

(3) Set a goal to reach. This can be an activity-related goal, a fundraising goal, or both.

(4) Invite friends and family to support your fundraising efforts through your own, personalized Outpace Hunger webpage.

Whether running a 5K, walking your neighborhood, hiking the Mountains to Sea trail, or paddling the French Broad River, Outpace Hunger participants play a vital part in ensuring our WNC neighbors have access to healthy food

Developed by Fairies and dedicated volunteers, Bullington Gardens’ Fairy Trail is a whimsical treat for the young and the young at heart. Featuring charming vignettes and villages, the fairy trail will charm you with its thoughtful design, eye catching displays and secret woodland trail.

Rules of the trail:

Do not move or rearrange fairy displays. The fairies are very fond of their own decorating.

Do not leave trash on the trail. Fairies do not like litter in their town.

Please ensure children and pets are supervised at all times. Dogs and loud noises can scare the fairies into hiding.

Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation. The fairies depend on the vegetation to build their homes.

The trail is one way only. Please stay on the trail at all times.

Tanglewood Youth Production Class: The Prom Ages 14-18

Ever wonder how a stage production comes together? In our Youth Production Classes, students work with directors, an artistic team, and their fellow students to learn and perform an exciting full-length play or musical. Our fall YPC session features The Prom, a musical comedy about big Broadway stars on a mission, a small-town Indiana prom, and the love they discover that unites them all. Classes will meet afterschool, and each session will end with two performances on the Mainstage!

Registration begins on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Tuition will be $450.00 – payment plans and scholarships will both be available.

Everyone has stories to tell from the private and mutual experiences of their lifetime. Our folk and self-taught artists capture these stories in powerful visual narratives that offer firsthand testimonies to the unfolding story of America. Storytellers do the same thing with spoken words.

The Asheville Art Museum and Buncombe County Public Libraries are presenting a series of storytelling programs in August and September to highlight the Art Museum’s current American Perspectives exhibit.

Wednesdays in the Learning Garden, Drop-in and Learn

New in 2022, The Learning Garden, located at the Cooperative Extension Office, 49 Mount Carmel Road will provide opportunities to Drop-In and Learn in the garden. Each month, selected gardens will offer demonstrations and programs, while all our gardens will be open to the public.

In addition, our Helpline desk will be open indoors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for in-person consultations, where Extension Master GardenersSM will provide problem solving assistance. Feel free to bring questions and samples (plant and insect) to the Helpline desk during your visit to the Learning Garden.

July 27 demonstrations will be:

Basics of Composting. Learn to compost with a multi-bin system: what to use and what not to use, how to mix it, how to monitor the pile, when it is ready, and how to use the finished product.

Taming Climbing Roses. Are your climbers out of control? Learn how to get your climbing rose onto your arbor or trellis to promote blooms.

Invasive Plant Table. Do you ask, what is this vine forming berries climbing all over my garden? Should I let English ivy climb up my trees? These plants are non-native invasive plants that are taking over our gardens and our forests. Come and see samples of these plants and learn how to reduce their spread.Garden tools are adapted to meet special needs.

Ergonomic Tools. Discover how to modify tools or purchase new tools that help gardeners garden longer.

Kids Corner. Family friendly gardening activities for the young at heart.

Our gardens open at 9 a.m. and demonstration programs will run between 10 and 11 a.m. Come, walk around, and soak in our lovely gardens! Most programs are informal and continuous – exceptions are noted above.

Note: Almost all activities will be held outdoors, so please dress appropriately for the weather.

Registration is not required.  Plan to Drop in and Learn!

Pictured here is one of our featured performers this evening: Catherine Yael Serota.  Catherine is a native of Asheville and spent much of here life in Western North Carolina. Her stories paint vivid pictures of childhood and heritage. Her storytelling portfolio contains tales of Appalachian historical, folk, tall tales, personal vignettes, and literary masterpieces seasoned with humor.

Night In The Country Carolinas Music Festival

Night in the Country Music Festivals returns to the Carolina foothills August 25-27, 2022. This Pure Country experience brings some of country music’s hottest artists to the world-renowned Tryon Resort in Mill Spring, North Carolina.

Night in the Country Carolinas features three nights of country music with performances by Darius Rucker, Jon Pardi, Dierks Bentley, Jimmie Allen, Jameson Rogers, Ashley McBryde, and much more! During the day, the festival has a wide range of one-of-a-kind events and attractions including Bands, Brews & Que, the Craft Beer Experience, Grapeland, the Beer Relay, Tournament of Champions, and more. The festival also features live music during the day and an outdoor nightlife experience after the concerts.

The festival takes place on festival grounds unlike any other. Tryon Resort is a 1,600-acre facility featuring 13 rings, onsite luxury cabins and an inn, RV pads with full hook-ups, and wide-open grounds and arenas that have the potential to host the largest music festivals and events in the world. Your safety and limiting the spread of COVID-19 is everyone’s main priority. We encourage you to review and adhere to the recommendations on the Buncombe County readiness site on how best to avoid COVID-19 and what to do if you think you might have it.


Bounty & Soul is a community-based non-profit with a mission to connect people to food, education and each other.

This opportunity involves sorting and inspecting produce donations from local grocers and placing them into food boxes that are distributed at weekly drive-thru markets. 

Time Commitment:

  • Thursdays 10am-12pm
  • Thursdays 1-3pm

Requirements:

  • Volunteers should agree to adhere to all the safety measures implemented
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Bending, stooping, and twisting may be required
  • Closed toed shoes

Health/Safety:

  • We are asking volunteers to wear/bring their own face covering when delivering items
    • Cloth covering nose and mouth
    • Fabric or disposable face mask
  • Asking volunteers to maintain physical distance of 6 feet or more when possible
    • Note: there are times when the volunteer task requires volunteers to engage closer than 6 feet. Please do not sign up if you feel uncomfortable.

An overly excited elephant learns to listen with a little help from her new friends in Listen Up, Louella, an adorably humorous new picture book from Ashley Belote, the illustrator of Frankenslime. Louella is VERY excited to be at Roar Scout Camp. There’s so many fun things for her to do! When Louella misses an important invitation, it’s up to Tarantula and the rest of their friends to help Louella learn to listen and play together.

Ashley Belote is the illustrator of Frankenslime and the author-illustrator of Listen Up, Louella . She studied traditional animation under the direction of Don Bluth. Ashley earned her BA from Alderson Broaddus University and her MA in Arts Administration from the University of Kentucky. Her graduate study included a children’s literature and illustration course through Simmons College. Ashley lives and works in North Carolina where she creates artwork that she hopes brings lots of laughs to others.

Bounty & Soul is a community-based non-profit with a mission to connect people to food, education and each other.

This opportunity involves sorting and inspecting produce donations from local grocers and placing them into food boxes that are distributed at weekly drive-thru markets. 

Time Commitment:

  • Thursdays 10am-12pm
  • Thursdays 1-3pm

Requirements:

  • Volunteers should agree to adhere to all the safety measures implemented
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Bending, stooping, and twisting may be required
  • Closed toed shoes

Health/Safety:

  • We are asking volunteers to wear/bring their own face covering when delivering items
    • Cloth covering nose and mouth
    • Fabric or disposable face mask
  • Asking volunteers to maintain physical distance of 6 feet or more when possible
    • Note: there are times when the volunteer task requires volunteers to engage closer than 6 feet. Please do not sign up if you feel uncomfortable.

What goes on behind the curtain? In our Tech Youth Production Classes, students learn and experience technical theatre and backstage work, including: safety, basic light and sound board operation, and stage management. Students will then put their skills to practice by running all technical and backstage roles during the Youth performances of The Prom, a musical comedy about big Broadway stars on a mission and a small-town Indiana prom.

Registration begins on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Tuition will be $250.00 – payment plans and scholarships will both be available.

Tanglewood Youth Theatre Class: Teen Scene Study Ages 13-18

Students explore their potential and harness their skills in this intermediate course all about the art of the scene. Students will discover their strengths and weaknesses through practicing acting exercises and character development techniques. Scene study is best for students who are already familiar with basic performance training. The course includes a showcase for family and friends on the final day of class.

Registration begins on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 10:00 am. Tuition will be $225 – Scholarships are available.

What to Expect

Guests will be required to demonstrate proficiency in zip lining including breaking.
