Part of Transfigurations IV: Harvest Records Celebrates 20 Years

Found in Sound is a live multimedia storytelling event at the Diana Wortham Theatre on Thursday, August 22nd and Friday, August 23rd. The show is a unique collection of stories from the Harvest Records universe and beyond produced with Erin Brethauer of This Land Films. The stories will be presented live on stage alongside original music, film, animation, photography, and featuring stage design and installations by Swannatopia.

BRIAR BRANCH is a homegrown, hometown string band. Long time Black

Mountain residents, Julia Weatherford and Pearl Shirley, mother and daughter, have

been singing and playing together since the 1980s. Expect to hear mountain

music with sweet vocal harmonies, toe-tapping banjo songs, and hard driving Old

Time fiddle tunes. Be delighted with magical hand crafted “Crankies”, moving

panoramas illustrating song verses. Feel the pull of sweet sad ballads with rich

cello accompaniment.

JULIA WEATHERFORD – VOCALS, CELLO, FIDDLE, GUITAR

Julia Weatherford has been a full-time artist/musician for as long as anyone can

remember. She is veteran performer on both cello and fiddle with notable

performing groups that range from The Asheville Symphony to the world fusion

Akira Satake Band. She was the artistic director of the legendary Black Mountain

Festival in its early years, and more recently the Coordinator of Fiddle Week at

The Swannanoa Gathering. Currently she performs regionally with StrathSpan and

Ceilidh Doon, and is the cellist of choice for the Canote Brothers, and is the

mother of Pearl.

PEARL ANGELINE SHIRLEY – VOCALS, FIDDLE, BANJO.

Pearl Shirley grew up in Black Mountain, NC, soaking up traditional Appalachian

music and dance almost without noticing. She picked up a tiny violin at age 5, and

since then has fiddled her way through hundreds of foot-stomping contra dances

and folk concerts. Pearl has toured with the popular contra dance band Mock

Turtle Soup, and she currently performs with the acclaimed old-time band, Blue

Eyed Girl. Pearl is the daughter of Julia.

A new take on Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s groundbreaking musical fairytale about wishes and the choices we make.

Be careful what you wish for, as Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s cockeyed fairytale comes to life in this Asheville Junior Theater adaptation of their groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical. Into the Woods JR. features all of your favorite characters — Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk) and the Witch — in this lyrically rich retelling of classic Brothers Grimm fables.

The musical centers on a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse, and wind up changed forever.

Asheville Junior Theater has re-imagined how to tell this Sondheim classic with an artsy and creative twist. Expect minimal sets and mature costuming, with a keen focus on acting, singing and movement. Strip away the pomp and circumstance to highlight the deep meaning behind this allegorical tale told mostly through song.

Differing from AJT’s shows you have grown to know and love, this black-box re-imagining is best suited for adults and children who are 8 years of age and up.

Run time is approximately 75 minutes and does not have an intermission.

The comedy of the season has landed! Fasten your seatbelts–there’s turbulence ahead in this laugh-out-loud tour-de-farce! It’s the 1960’s and Bernard, an American living in Paris, has the perfect setup: three international fiancées, each a beautiful airline hostess with frequent “layovers.” He keeps “one up, one down, and one pending” until unexpected schedule changes bring all three to Paris, and Bernard’s apartment, at the same time.  Prepare yourself for the most deliriously funny flight of your life.

Jackie Robinson: A Game Apart provides a glimpse of Jackie Robinson’s life during an era of separate and unequal locker rooms, of whites only hotels, and of restaurants with a back door for colored athletes. Witness a star player who was showered with adulation on the field and became a second-hand citizen when he walked off the diamond. A powerful lesson of courage through dedication, perseverance and leadership.

Hendersonville Theatre premiers its first One Act Play Festival of short plays, featuring a variety of different stories from regional and national playwrights, local directors, and incredible performers.

The process began with an open call for plays. A team of readers poured through hundreds of submissions to select a group of outstanding plays. The result? A weekend-long extravaganza to bring a kaleidoscope of new and exciting world premiers to Hendersonville!

Hendersonville Theatre’s One Act Play Festival presents plays by established and emerging writers. Divided into two shows, Sections A and B are a multiple series of short plays, performed in rotation. One-act plays provide a condensed yet impactful theatrical experience, allowing for concise and focused storytelling that can captivate the audience’s attention from start to finish. This format often demands precision and intensity from the performers, leading to powerful performances that resonate deeply with viewers.

Additionally, Hendersonville Theatre’s One Act Play Festival serves as a unique platform for artists to showcase their skills and creativity. A one-act play offers the opportunity to demonstrate versatility in acting, directing, and technical execution within a limited timeframe. This challenge can foster growth and development among participants, pushing them to explore innovative approaches to storytelling and staging.​

Furthermore, the festival environment itself fosters a vibrant exchange of ideas and a sense of community among theater enthusiasts. Presenting a one-act play at the festival allows performers and crews to connect with peers, receive constructive feedback from experienced professionals, and immerse themselves in a supportive network of fellow theater aficionados. This experience can prove invaluable for honing skills, gaining exposure, and broadening one’s perspective on the craft of theater.

weekly tailgate market, where vendors sell fresh-picked seasonal vegetables and fruit, local honey, cut flowers, plant starts and

Hendersonville Farmers Market in front of the Historic Train Depot, 8am-1pm, Hendersonville Farmers Market aims to be a world-class market that contributes to the success of local producers and growers, expands access to farm fresh foods, and creates a
vibrant community gathering space. With fresh produce, meats, baked goods, crafts, live entertainment, food trucks, and more,
it’s a weekly outing with something for everybody! Visitors can expect a lively atmosphere celebrating food, farm and family with
live music every Saturday! At least 30 vendors from within a 60-mile radius participate in each market, offering produce, meat,
eggs, dairy, honey, baked goods, crafts, beverages, and more. Special events such as Tomato Day, Wellness Day and
Juneteenth Celebration will occur at the market regularly throughout the season. Food trucks will also be a staple, allowing
visitors to enjoy breakfast or lunch on their farmers market adventure

Kids Fishing Tournaments: For young anglers, the first kids fishing tournament will be taking place on April 13 at Charles D. Owen Park from 8-11:30 a.m. There will also be kids fishing tournaments at Lake Julian Park on May 4 and August 24, from 8-11:30 a.m. These events are open to all youth 15 and under. Competitors will be divided into age groups (0-5, 6-10, and 11-15) with prizes in each for biggest fish caught, smallest fish caught, and most fish caught. The admission for these fishing tournaments is $10, which includes bait, beverages, and grab-n-go breakfast items. Pre-registration is encouraged.

Since 1980, we have been providing Asheville and the surrounding area with a full range of local, sustainably produced produce, meats, eggs, cheeses, breads, plants, prepared foods and crafts. Day vendors complement the members’ offerings with additional products and services.

The North Asheville Tailgate Market is a weekly, Saturday morning gathering of the best farmers, craftsmen, and bakers. With over 40 vendors and more than 40,000 annual customers, the market’s energetic and warm environment welcomes all.

Located within the wildly-popular and botanically beautiful Southern Appalachian Mountains, The North Carolina Arboretum offers more than 10 miles of hiking trails that connect to many other area attractions such as Lake Powhatan, the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy their hiking experience at the Arboretum as trail options include easy, moderate, and difficult challenge levels. All trails are dog-friendly and visitors are asked to adhere to the proper waste disposing procedures for pets.

Baker Exhibit Center

Where can you see a butterfly with a five foot wingspan, or a longhorn beetle with antennae more than twelve feet across? The answers can be found amongst the enormous sculptures on display in BUGS: Outside the Box!

Scientifically exact, with a keen attention to detail, the exhibit features a virtual army of giant bugs with one aim in mind – educating the public and shining a light on museum collections, taxonomy, and the power of magnification.

Among the highlights of the exhibit is a rarely seen long-arm beetle more than ten feet in height, a collection of heavily armored stag beetles with impressive jaws and horns as long as your arm, and an insight into the amazing intricacy of the physiology of each insect on display. Alongside these impressive works of art is the insect in question represented at life size,  and detailed information on the life habits, location, and other facts unique to each insect and its family.

Splasheville

Splasheville is located in Pack Square Park on 80 Court Plaza. The free splash pad’s regular daily hours are 9.m-8:30pm, but may close for special events or during inclement weather. Check the calendar for scheduled closures.

Artists are invited to create artworks with the theme of “Red, White and Blue.“  Apply these patriotic colors at the center of your subjects, however there are no limits to your creativity, your artworks don’t need to be primarily patriotic theme, but viewers should be able to spot the use of recognizable amount of red, white and blue colors.

Fight for your freedom! We will have speakers from Planned Parenthood speaking about the attack on women’s reproductive rights, as well as several Democratic candidates for office.

Who should attend: All Interested Democratic and left-leaning unaffiliated voters in East Asheville.
