Activation in the Park
Jul 30 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
French Broad River Park
Activation in the Park

Activation in the Park

French Broad River Park location: Go to the parking lot off of Riverview Drive, which is off of Amboy Rd. Find the cobalt blue canopy tent!

We will be as close to directly across from the parking lot as we can, near the water, with the tent (go past the bathrooms and head to the water). So, you should be able to find us pretty easily if it’s your first time).

NOTE: Bring a chair, pillow, or towel to sit on, an open mind, and energies of love, receptivity, and curiosity.

Activation is 2 hours together: The 1st hour is a discussion and sharing (OPEN conversation with a topic we choose from a container that all participate in), a sharing from a group member or members, and then the last hour is a chakra detox/tune up via meditations/guided visualizations, or a psychic ability empowerment session led by the hosts Natalie and Adriane.

This is how we participate TOGETHER in the evolution of “New Earth” energies moving into a world where truth and the ethos of love-light (e.g.: Law of One ideation) are the guiding forces.

All who are interested in spiritual growth, OPEN-MINDED conversations that include the light and dark of our planet, evolution, and the desire to co-create and get to know others who are like-hearted (not just like-minded) are welcome!

We look forward to meeting you!

Songcatchers Music Series: The Foreign Landers
Jul 30 @ 3:00 pm
Cradle of Forestry in America

Song Catchers Event

Sponsored by long-time partners Morrow Insurance, the Songcatchers Music Series are summer concerts held at the outdoor amphitheater at Cradle of Forestry in Pisgah National Forest. This series celebrates the musical traditions of the Southern Appalachians, ancient and new. The Songcatchers Music Series draws its name from the film of the same name that tells the story of Olive Dame Cambell, founder of the John C Campbell Folk School, who traveled the southern Appalachian Mountains in the early 20th century to capture the musical traditions preserved by the secluded mountain communities. This series seeks to share those traditions that still thrive within the talented regional artists that grace the cozy little stage at The Cradle of Forestry.

The Foreign Landers is a duo hailing from opposite sides of the Atlantic united by their love of bluegrass and traditional folk music and their love for each other. Together they combine the musical styles of their respective homelands, along with their instrumental prowess and haunting vocals to create something new.

It was more than unlikely circumstances that brought these two together.  David Benedict grew up in South Carolina playing with the only Celtic folk band in town, while Tabitha Agnew was perhaps the only 12 year-old in Northern Ireland who started playing the 5-string banjo after a chance hearing of an Alison Krauss & Union Station record. Ironically, it took each a while to discover the traditional music of their own countries, but they eventually came around. Both excelled at their instruments and found themselves playing with some of the most promising young acoustic bands on the scene today—David with the Boston-band Mile Twelve and Tabitha with both Cup O’Joe and Midnight Skyracer from the UK. With such unique common threads, there was an instant connection when Tabitha and David finally met.

Now married and based in the States, the Benedicts are finally making music on their own. Their forth-coming debut EP marks the first chapter in their journey together, and the release of the title track “Put All Your Troubles Away” will take you along with them to uncharted musical territories.

PATIO SHOW: Asheville Junction
Jul 30 @ 6:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

PATIO SHOW: Asheville Junction

Asheville Junction is one of Asheville’s newest bluegrass/Americana bands, playing fun and lively music right out the gate. Our shows feature female and male vocals and harmonies, hot fiddlin’ and instrumentals, beautiful ballads, beloved standards, unique covers and originals. There’s a lot going on at the Asheville Junction! Folks find themselves singing, clapping, stomping or laughing along to our music before they know it.

Tierra Raiti, lead singer and fiery fiddler for the band, has been noticed as a formidable rising musician and invited to appear on the Woodsongs International Radio Show in March 2022. Tierra was a featured singer and player on an album she cut when she was 14 years old, Galax to Toledo Tracks. Recordings from this album have been played in roots and Americana radio shows around the world. Still in high school, Tierra is a phenomenally accomplished and versatile singer and fiddler, having won numerous fiddle contests and violin competitions, as well as singing competitions and scholarships ranging from jazz to classical to country.

Asheville Junction formed when mother-daughter duo Tierra and Maria Raiti moved to Asheville from Ohio and joined up with long-time local musicians Brad Pope on upright bass, Tim Comstock on mandolin and Frank Eastes ringing out the 5-string banjo. As a newly formed band with experienced and talented musicians and sounds, we are excited and honored that we’re scheduled to play at many of the region’s established community events, breweries and music venues in our first year.

Steve James is an original roots music adept whose guitar, mandolin, singing and writing have made him familiar around the world to those whose inner soundtrack resonates to real folk and blues. Steve’s musical journey of over half a century started in New York where childhood playthings included Leadbelly 78s and his Dad’s dusty guitar. That trip led from the lofts of the Lower East Side to the hills of Tennessee, Memphis and the deeper South where the young autodidact got pointed in the right direction by elder wizards like Sam McGee and Furry Lewis who told him: “Get your own song!” Settling in Texas, Steve employed what he’d learned during his journeywork on stage and in the studio to become known as “an underground legend” at home and to embark on world travels that continue to the present. Taking the “pass it on” covenant that comes with learning real roots music seriously, he has participated in literally hundreds of music workshops and camps and created numerous books and video lessons for guitar and mandolin. Also experienced as a luthier, Steve, who now calls Seattle home, devotes his down time to the repair and restoration of vintage instruments and has acted as a product rep and design consultant for Collings and National, the makers of his signature model guitar.

There is trouble in River City, Iowa when con artist Harold Hill rolls into town. Hill poses as a boys’ band organizer and sells uniforms and instruments to the naive midwestern folk, planning to leave town before he ever has to teach a single music lesson. But those plans are turned on their head when Harold Hill meets the clever town Librarian, Marian Paroo. One of the most universally cherished treasures of American musical theater, The Music Man was an instant smash hit when it premiered on Broadway in 1957, winning five Tony Awards, and going on to a long career of revivals, tours, and regional performances.  The Smithsonian Institution ranks The Music Man as one of the “great glories” of American popular culture. Don’t miss this summer smash hit!

In this Tony award-winning musical, six awkward spelling champions vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the champions spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, six spellers enter; one speller wins!

“Art in the Heart” Call for Artists extended
Jul 31 all-day
online

Call for applications

In partnership with the Friends of Buncombe County Special Collections and Asheville’s Public Art and Cultural Commission, the City is kicking off a new temporary public art program to activate Pack Square Plaza and engage with the community in a new way. Art in the Heart will support the production/installation of up to 10 temporary art projects and/or experiences in Pack Square Plaza, with artist stipends ranging from $500 to $1,500. The City is calling on artists and creatives to apply.

Art in the Heart is now accepting applications via the following application LINK. Interested applicants must submit their proposals by 5 p.m. on June 21, 2022. EXTENDED to Aug. 1st by 5pm. The first installation or performance could begin as early as July with artists’ works continuing on a coordinated or rotating basis through the end of the year.

With the removal of the Vance Monument and the start of the Pack Square Plaza Visioning and Improvements project, the plaza – including the site of the former Vance Monument – will soon enter into a new era. Through the Art in the Heart program, artists and creatives are asked to help cultivate and facilitate critical conversations around the past, present, and future of Pack Square Plaza. A range of temporary artwork may be appropriate including: traditional, non-traditional, experiences, and performances.

Public spaces and monuments are dynamic and should be an inclusive reflection of the people and history they represent. Therefore, artist proposals must embrace the theme of social equity and inclusion and respond to the following questions:

  • What should Pack Square Plaza look and feel like in the future?
  • What stories haven’t been told or represented in downtown Asheville?

Art in the Heart is a way to unite, heal, and strengthen the community. The goal is to use art to spark conversation and ideas on how to make Pack Square Plaza – a central gathering place and hub of activity for the region – a place that resonates with Asheville’s diverse community. The program will help inspire and inform the larger initiative underway of creating a community vision for the future of this area.

For more information and to apply, visit www.ashevillenc.gov/publicart or the City’s bid page: www.ashevillenc.gov/bids.

Pack Square Plaza Visioning Updates

The City of Asheville and Buncombe County are continuing to make progress on a broader engagement effort to document the community’s vision for the future of Pack Square Plaza and plan for implementation.

Following a Request for Proposals (RFP) process launched earlier this year, the top ranked team was selected to lead engagement and documentation of the community’s perspectives on the Pack Square area, and to provide guidance on how the design, programming, and management of the space can become more equitable and inclusive for all. This collaborative community engagement and planning initiative is anticipated to begin in July and continue for 6-9 months. Staff will present a contract to the City Council for consideration on June 14.
