Brother and The Hayes
Oct 16 @ 7:30 pm
Isis Music Hall-Main stage

Brother and The Hayes is a Tennessee based, Texas born Americana-roots band led by siblings Jennie Hayes Kurtz and David Bingaman. They combine thoughtful lyrics with infectious grooves, pulling from an assortment of blues, bluegrass, and country & western influences. The duo has released four studio projects since 2017 and their latest release, Another Strange Time, is turning heads. The writing remains poetic yet approachable while the memorable hooks are catching listeners in a new way.

You would be hard pressed to find a band that writes more authentically and has more fun playing together. The rapport between brother and sister on stage is something to behold as they draw you in and make you feel like part of the family.

NC Crunch
Oct 19 @ 12:00 pm
various locations

North Carolina Crunch

This October, join schools, child care centers, and organizations across North Carolina in celebrating National Farm to School Month by crunching into a locally grown apple. The 2022 NC Crunch will take place on Wednesday, October 19th. Participants of all ages are invited to crunch with us!

Across North Carolina, kids and adults will be crunching an apple grown on a local farm in October. In addition to commemorating National Farm to School and Early Care and Education Month, this annual event, co-sponsored by the NC Farm to Preschool Network and the Farm to School Coalition of NC, celebrates North Carolina agriculture, local farmers and farm workers, and nutrition.

The NC Crunch promotes healthy eating and supports farm to school and other local food purchasing initiatives throughout the state. It’s also a fun way to connect food and agriculture to all kinds of classroom curricula – from science to art. Don’t worry if you’re unable to participate on October 19th – you can host a NC Crunch event anytime during October’s National Farm to School Month festivities.

Ready to start planning your Crunch?

We’ve created a Crunch Guide with information on sourcing your produce, curriculum connections, social media and press release templates to help you share your Crunch with the local community, and more. This year’s Crunch Guide also includes tips for Crunching during almost post-COVID-19.

Click here to register for the 2022 Crunch!

You will receive an email with a link to download the 2022 Crunch Guide upon submission of the form.

PLEASE NOTE: The registration form is a Google Doc. If you cannot access it, please contact the Growing Minds team at (828) 236-1282 to sign up.

Print your own NC Crunch stickers

Download a PDF template for printable “I crunched!” stickers (use these labels: Avery Template Number 5293, 1 2/3″ round labels, 24/sheet).

Promote your NC Crunch event on social media

We’ve created new social media graphics that you can download and share to help promote your NC Crunch event. These graphics have been created to help with nutrition education and promotional outreach for the NC Crunch.

A photo frame is available for your social media news feed to let everyone know that you or your family, class or group crunched into North Carolina grown produce and you appreciate our North Carolina farm to school heroes. In addition, two general NC Crunch graphics as well as 14 graphics on seasonal produce grown in our state are available.

Please share on social media how you are celebrating the #NCCrunch and recognizing our #farmtoschool heroes. Tag the @F2SCoalitionNC and @NCFarmtoPreschool Network with your posts. We look forward to seeing your photos and activity posts. Click here to access all of these social media graphics.

Are you a farmer or part of an organization that is not in a school?

You can still crunch! Here are some ideas for how to get involved.

Whatever activity you do, be sure to snap a picture and post on social media tagged with #NCCrunch and #F2SMonth. Here’s a printable sign to use in pictures.

Ideas for farmers to participate in the NC Crunch:

  • Host a Crunch at a farmers market you sell at during October.
  • Visit a childcare center or K-12 classroom or lunchroom and provide a taste test.
  • Host a field trip on your farm.
  • Crunch on the farm with your family/employees.
  • Have a NC Crunch photo booth at your farm for u-pick customers through October.
  • Don’t forget to register your event! (No event is too small to register and you can skip the questions for schools if your event will not be held in a school.)

Ideas for community members to participate in the NC Crunch:

  • Host a Crunch event at your office or business with your employees.
  • Take a farm field trip to a u-pick apple farm with your employees.
  • Have a NC Crunch photo booth at your office or business.
  • Restaurants–feature a local apple recipe on your menu in October.
  • Don’t forget to register your event! (No event is too small to register and you can skip the questions for schools if your event will not be held in a school.)

If you are in ASAP’s Appalachian Grown region, reach out to the Growing Minds team, [email protected], for “I tried local apples” stickers, apple-themed children’s books, apple recipe cards, and help brainstorming other NC Crunch activities.

Grace Pettis

Isis Music Hall-Lounge

Tickets on Sale now – Please Call the Venue at 828-575-2737

Grace Pettis epitomizes the term singer/songwriter. As a singer, her voice is both powerful and beautiful, and she uses it like a fine arts painter to color and craft her songs. American Songwriter Magazine wrote “As a decorated songwriter, Pettis blurs the lines between country, Americana and folk. Her soulful delivery of calculated lyric lines helps her tell stories for all generations.” Her songs have been recorded by many esteemed artists, including Sara Hickman and Ruthie Foster. Grace explains, “The songs that ring the truest often come from my own feelings and memories. People need upbeat songs they can dance to, but they need sad songs, too. Hard songs. The songs that are the hardest and most painful to write seem to be the most healing. I write from wherever I happen to be. If I’m happy, I write a happy song. If I’m sad, I write a sad song. If the world is on fire, so are my songs.

Freebo + Alice Howe

Tickets on Sale now – Please Call the Venue at 828-575-2737 for Dinner Reservations and Reserve Seat Tickets

Alice Howe is a warm and engaging performer becoming known for her soulful, impeccably-tuned vocals and brilliantly crafted songs. She has been marked as one to watch since the release of her 2017 EP You’ve Been Away So Long. The record debuted on the Folk Radio Charts with a #1 Most Played song, “Homeland Blues,” firmly establishing her as a rising star. In 2019, Alice released Visions, a modern love letter to 60s and 70s folk and timeless blues, garnering critical acclaim from gatekeepers such as Billboard and smitten local press alike. Alice has just completed her forthcoming album, Circumstance, recorded at iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, working with Freebo as her producer, arranger, and co-writer. Due out in April 2023, Circumstance features ten new original songs backed by a world-class band.
Freebo is best known for his decade of touring and recording with Bonnie Raitt, and has distinguished himself as one of the great bassists of our time, playing on records with CSN, Maria Muldaur, John Mayall, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, and Neil Young as well as appearing on Saturday Night Live, The Midnight Special, The Muppet Show, and in concert with the legendary Spinal Tap. Not willing to simply rest on those achievements, Freebo delved more deeply into his creativity and has become a highly regarded singer/songwriter, now working on his 6th full-length solo CD. A multi award winner and finalist in numerous songwriting contests, Freebo’s music reflects his compassionate concern for the world and people around him, and his lyrics and open stage banter have helped him connect with listeners worldwide. A live musical experience with Freebo is astute, insightful, clever, and truly melodic.
Alice Howe and Freebo present a unique study in contrasts, bringing together a rising voice in Americana music and a venerable rock, folk, and blues icon. Each a compelling performer in their own right, they both lead and support each other in their well-crafted songs with flawless harmonies and tasteful instrumentation.

Currently out of Asheville, NC, Supatight delivers a high energy live performance that is funk driven and appeals to a wide variety of audiences. While specializing in hard-hitting funk, their music incorporates elements of reggae, soul, jazz, and comedic country. Supatight blends intricately timed grooves with improvisational components resulting in an authentic, full sound, drawing diverse styles from every member of the band.

Leisureville is as much about the vibe as it is the bass and chill beats. Catch some free-flow, soul/hip-hop vocals. The lyrics have an easy swagger and good vibe, like a bumping summer pool party into a late night get-down. You’ll hear the essence of gospel, funk influenced keys which transcend the group closer to R&B. The music is meant to put you in a relaxed state of mind.
