Calendar of Events

Enrollment is now open for two adult improvisation acting classes offered by Hendersonville Theatre (HT). Classes will be taught by professional improvisation actor and comedian Emily Swindal. Both classes are open to anyone over the age of 18, regardless of experience level.

Improv Level One: Communicate. Collaborate. Play. meets on Wednesdays from April 5 to May 24. Tuition is $180. In the class, students will work at getting comfortable on stage while having fun doing it. Students will learn to have compassion for themselves and their classmates as performers as they learn the fundamentals of improvisation and develop support and spontaneity. Together, they will learn the importance of “yes-and-ing,” heightening the absurdity and raising the stakes. They will also cover the differences between short form and long form improv. This is a short form class similar to Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Ceremonialist: PMT Sanctioned Teachers

We are seeking volunteers to assist us in our small after school program for children in West Asheville in low-income housing.  We provide a safe and nourishing environment, healthy snacks, and creative activities.  Our program currently meets during the school year on most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00-5:00pm. You may volunteer for one or two days a week. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Assist with serving snacks
• Interact with children during activity time
• Supervise games and outdoor free time
• For people with background in education, there is also an opportunity to assist with curriculum development and program planning and administration

Requirements:

• Background check
• Orientation booklets will be provided
• Masks are required if unvaccinated

Attorney, author, and advocate Robyn B. Gigl will present “Transgender Issues: Legal and Cultural Competencies,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 20 in the Mullen-James Humanities Hall.

Gigl’s lecture will explore current and proposed laws that impact the trans community in schools, work, prisons & in spaces of public accommodation. Gigl is a member of New Jersey Supreme Court’s Committee on Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement; a member of the Board of Directors of Garden State Equality and the Trans Affirming Alliance; and a past chair of the LGBT Rights Section of the New Jersey Bar Association.

Join New York Times Bestselling author and UNC Asheville alumnus, Wiley Cash ’00 in conversation with author Benjamin Gilmer on Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m. at UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center in the Manheimer Room.

This event is part of the Common Word Community Read, curated by Cash. The program brings the UNC Asheville community together to engage in a collective educational experience. Each semester, one book will serve as the focus of numerous virtual and in-person lectures and discussions that will allow participants to delve deeper into the text. Over the course of the academic year, participants will read one book each semester, gaining insights and sharing ideas in a welcoming and respectful environment. Spring 2023’s selection is The Other Dr. Gilmer: Two Men, a Murder, and an Unlikely Fight for Justice.

On April 21, 2023  PARI is offering two ticket options to this Meteor Shower Experience.  The first option is the OVERNIGHT CABIN PACKAGE for two people that includes dinner, a tour, sunset hike, observing the meteors, night sky observing, an overnight stay in a cabin quarter and breakfast.  The second option is an OVERNIGHT CAMPING PACKAGE that includes dinner, a tour, sunset hike, observing the meteors, night sky observing, an overnight stay in a PARI campsite and breakfast on Saturday morning.

This is a rain or shine event.  If weather does not permit viewing there will be alternate programming.  No refunds will be issued!

The purpose of the Meet-up is to introduce you to a new revolutionary path of personal growth and transformation that is designed for busy Westerners. You no longer need to go live in a cave, leave your family and meditate 6-8 hours a day to achieve your full potential.

There will be a presentation by Marty Clemons, who is one of only a handful of Mastery Higher Brain Living facilitators in the country, She will explain the system and do a live demo of the technique.

Join the Asheville Museum of History on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 at 10am for our first in-person event of the year! We invite you to join us in person at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNCA. This hybrid event also airs via Zoom if you cannot attend. It will be recorded and available for later viewing.

Western North Carolina has a human history dating at least 10,000 years, and every generation has interacted with or shaped the mountainous landscape in some way. Many of the interactions have been harmonious, while at other times, humans have altered or damaged the land. As a result, several individuals and organizations have also fervently worked to conserve or protect the resources and revered places in this area we call home. It is impossible to discuss all of these trends and events in one program, but we are proud to present an (incomplete) environmental history of WNC with a great lineup of knowledgeable experts and stewards.

Tickets: $5 for AMoH/OLLI members/ $10 for General Admission. We also have no-cost, community-funded tickets available. We want our events to be accessible to as many people as possible. If you are able please consider making a donation along with your ticket purchase. These donations are placed in our Community Fund, which allows us to offer tickets at no cost to those who would not be able to attend otherwise.

Viewing: In-Person attendees will receive a confirmation email and all attendees will receive a Zoom link with which to view the program. The recording will be available on our website.

About the Speakers:

John Ross  is the author of more than a dozen books focusing on environmental history, including Through The Mountains: The French Broad River and Time.

Ross’ presentation will discuss the French Broad region and some of its specific environmental challenges and successes.

Donald Edward Davis, PhD., is an independent scholar and environmental historian. He has authored or edited seven books, including The American Chestnut: An Environmental History and Where There Are Mountains: An Environmental History of the Southern Appalachians.

Davis’ presentation is entitled Mountains of Resilience: Revisioning Environmental History in the Southern Appalachians.

Danny Bernstein is a hike leader for the Carolina Mountain Club, Friends of the Smokies, and the Asheville Camino group. She’s written several outdoor books including DuPont Forest: A History.

Bernstein will present the history of the Carolina Mountain Club.

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement!

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned. With an emphasis on interactive, hands-on exhibits, people of all ages will leave inspired to make something of their own!
