CORE Programming
Buncombe County Parks & Recreation is proud to offer Community Outreach and Recreational Experiences (CORE) programming, which consists of free and engaging activities geared towards youth ages 5-15. CORE travels to parks and community centers around Buncombe County. The program takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Asheville Downtown Association is thrilled to announce the return of the beloved Pritchard Park Arts and Culture Series, made possible through a generous partnership with the Trina Mullen Foundation, City of Asheville Parks and Recreation, ArtsAVL, and Explore Asheville. This summer series will run from May 28 through August 30, featuring exciting activations every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
Mondays: Pickin’ in the Park
Enjoy performances by local singer-songwriters in an intimate and relaxed setting. Experience the rich musical heritage of Asheville as talented musicians share their stories and songs.

Movies in the Park returns with free family favorite films projected on a massive outdoor screen in Pack Square Park just after dusk on the second Friday of the month! Community members are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the beloved summer tradition produced by Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) and sponsored by Au Pair in America.
The APR Rec n Roll Play Zone opens about an hour before showtime with games, music, and other activities for kids and teens, as well as themed giveaways while supplies last.

When going for a walk in the great outdoors of western North Carolina, it isn’t long before something will catch your eye. “Ooo, a red eft! So cute and fierce.” You also realize that there is amazing plant diversity all around, from the small plants where the red efts hide through the brushy understory up to the forest canopy. One group of the brushy understory is native azaleas, which are quite distinct from the evergreen azaleas one sees in many gardens. Come learn how to recognize native azaleas – their diversity across more than a dozen species, where they occur naturally, and “Ooo! Look at that one. I wish I could have it on my property” – and how to propagate them in order to preserve them. Be better equipped to spot and understand our native azaleas during your walks and hikes throughout western North Carolina. Pools will open Saturday, May 25!
Dates of Operation:
Grant Center Pool: Saturday, May 25th through Sunday, August 11th
Recreation Park Pool: Saturday, May 25th through Monday, September 2nd, weekends only from
August 12th through September 2ndPools open weekends only until June 10th, with the exception of Monday, May 27!
Hours of Operation June 10 through August 11:
Monday through Friday – 12:00pm-6:00pm
Saturday – 11:00am-6:00pm
Sunday – 1:00pm-6:00pmCost is $3 per person per day
Family Campouts: Buncombe County Parks & Recreation’s beloved Family Campout events are returning. These family campouts feature a no-frills camping experience; all guests need to bring is a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. Lake Julian Park, which typically does not allow overnight camping, will open its gates strictly for this event. In addition to an overnight camping experience, there will be educational outdoor skills workshops, fishing, nature walks, s’mores, campfire songs, and more. These events will be taking place at Lake Julian Park on June 1-2, and August 17-18. Dinner and breakfast are included in the $40 per family registration fee. Up to 30 families can participate in the event. Pre-registration is required.

Asheville Parks & Recreation’s public pools provide safe and affordable outdoor summer fun for all ages. For info about pool schedules, please call 828-348-4770 or visit ashevillecitypools.com.
Malvern Hills Park’s 90 year-old outdoor pool will not open this summer. While we were able to keep the facility operational through last summer, the pool can no longer be repaired to safely meet the needs of our community. For more, read this article.

- Individual – $3 per session

- Family Season Pass – $150 (up to four individuals)
