Wildlife Workshop & Walkabout
Jul 18 @ 5:15 pm – 7:00 pm
Defenders of Wildlife

In this free, fun and educational event, you’ll have a chance to learn about the endangered Carolina northern flying squirrel and build nest boxes to aid in its recovery!

Join Defenders and special guest presenter U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologist Sue Cameron on Thursday, July 18th to learn about the endangered Carolina northern flying squirrel. Ms. Cameron coordinates efforts to recover the squirrel, and you’ll learn what makes it special and why it is endangered, as well as effective strategies aimed at helping it recover. You’ll also hear from Anna Norton – live and on location at Southern Highlands Reserve – about the unique role the Reserve is playing in the squirrel’s recovery.

Following the presentation, you’ll have the chance to help these critters in the wild by assembling flying squirrel nest boxes that the NC Wildlife Resources Commission will install as part of their monitoring program. Refreshments will also be provided.

Then, join us on Saturday, July 20th for a walkabout along Flat Laurel Creek Trail, Pisgah National Forest, NC. We’ll enjoy this cool, high elevation spruce-fir forest – an endangered ecosystem in our region and home to several other rare species – while we explore what makes this squirrel habitat unique. We’ll also examine previously installed nest boxes in the area for upgrading through the Resource Commission’s programs and a collaborative red spruce restoration project underway.

Sponsored by weilerwoodsforwildlife.com. Nest boxes made possible by deltechomes.com.

Arboretum Reads “The Nature Fix” Book Discussion
Jul 18 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
The NC Arboretum

SAHC and the North Carolina Arboretum are teaming for a series of events about nature’s influence on you! This series will focus on how time in nature affects your brain, health, and creativity. You will learn about the many international scientific studies on nature’s influence on our bodies, the impact of five minutes verses five hours of nature immersion, and how sensory awareness can deepen your natural experience and its benefits.

Jump start this series with us by joining The Arboretum Reads Book Club in discussing “The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative” by Florence Williams. The book dives into completely new research, where Williams uncovers the powers of the natural world to improve health, promote reflection and innovation, and ultimately strengthen our relationships. With modern life shifting dramatically indoors, these ideas – and the answers they yield – are more urgent than ever. Access to research, related materials, and chapter summaries will be provided in advance of each discussion session. Read along or come with the chapter notes and dive into the discussion!

May Book Club Discussion: Chapters 1-4
Thursday, May 16th; 5:30-7 p.m.

June Book Club Discussion: Chapters 5-8

J.S. Breukelaar in conversation with Nathan Ballingrud
Jul 18 @ 10:00 pm – 11:30 pm
Firestorm Books & Coffee

Join us for an evening with author J.S. Breukelaar as she talks about her latest book, “Collision: Stories” with Nathan Ballingrud, award-winning author of “Wounds,” now a motion picture.

From J.S. Breukelaar, author of novels “American Monster” and the critically acclaimed Aurealis Award finalist “Aletheia,” comes a collection of twelve of her darkest, finest speculative fiction tales, including 4 brand new works, one a novella. While Breukelaar’s stories live in the realm of the uncanny and the unexpected, in the dark corners and the spaces in between, their themes are all too familiar. Whether dealing with loss in the gothic strangeness of “Union Falls,” revenge in the weird mythos of “Ava Rune,” discrimination in the wreckage of “Collision,” or displacement in the heartbreaking dystopia of “Glow,” these memorable works shimmer, spark, and at times even writhe on the page.

J.S. Breukelaar is a columnist and instructor at LitReactor.com and you can also find her at www.thelivingsuitcase.com.

Nathan Ballingrud was born in Massachusetts in 1970, but spent most of his life in the South. He studied literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the University of New Orleans. Among other things, he has been a cook on oil rigs and barges, a waiter, and a bartender in New Orleans. He now lives in Asheville, NC, with his daughter in an apartment across from the French Broad River.

PATIO SHOW :: Letters To Abigail at The Grey Eagle
Jul 18 @ 10:00 pm – Jul 19 @ 12:00 am
The Grey Eagle

FREE PATIO SHOW :: Letters To Abigail at The Grey Eagle

Letters To Abigail is an acoustic Americana band fronted by songwriters, James Harrell of Snowville, VA and Kelli Redmond of Asheville, NC. Harrell and Redmond have been writing together since before the release of their debut album, “say anything” in 2013. Their first recording effort donned such pros as Adam Steffey (Allison Kraus, The Boxcars) on mandolin, Nicky Sanders (Steep Canyon Rangers) on fiddle, David Holt (Doc Watson) on clawhammer banjo and Doyle Grisham (Jimmy Buffet, pedal steel hall of fame) on pedal steel and achieved a spot on WNCW’s top 100 albums of the year. Since then the two have been touring all over the southeast, northeast to the midwest playing shows and festivals as a duo, trio and as a four piece band. In 2016 Letters To Abigail was back in the world renowned studios at echo mountain recording a new batch of songs, their self titled sophomore album also grabbing a top 100 spot. Inspired and influenced by the sounds and songs of classic country, bluegrass, folk and singer songwriters they have created a unique and refreshing sound. Letters To Abigail’s songs are not only relatable, they are thought provoking, wrapping their silky harmonies around melodic stories lead the listener to feel every word. They are a perfect fit for all venues, festivals, house concerts, bars and restaurants, private and corporate events. LTA can be anywhere from a 2 to 4 piece band depending on the budget and needs of the venue.
