Since 2002, Abbey Road LIVE! has been rocking the music of The Beatles. Initially a tribute to the monumental “Abbey Road” album, the band has expanded its repertoire to include more than 150 Beatles tunes, from all eras of the Fab Four’s career.
This is not your typical Beatle look-alike tribute act; don’t expect mop-top haircuts and fake British accents. Rather, an Abbey Road LIVE! show is about bringing to life some of the more mature and complex Beatles material in a raw & spirited fashion, while remaining true to the original recordings. Combining attention to detail with a creative exuberance, the band always delights its audiences with its diverse repertoire of hits and more obscure favorites.

Sacramento, CA alternative hip-hop artist Hobo Johnson is Frank Lopes Jr; often backed by his bandmates “The Lovemakers.” In November 2017, Hobo Johnson released the record The Rise of Hobo Johnson, which Frank wrote during a time he had to live out of his ’94 Toyota Corolla – hence his self-given pseudonym. On April 17, 2018, Hobo Johnson released the highly-anticipated single “Peach Scone” (both the studio and live version), which debuted on Spotify’s New Music Friday. (Listen to “Peach Scone” here.) The new single comes on the heels of Hobo Johnson’s “Peach Scone” live performance video, which was posted online as a submission for NPR’s Tiny Desk contest. The live video of that unreleased track got Hobo Johnson much more than expected. In just 7 weeks, the “Peach Scone” video racked up over 14.6 million views on Facebook and YouTube. Across all socials, their followers have grown from 10,000 total to well over one million followers. Their fervent new fans boosted the 2017 The Rise of Hobo Johnson album to #8 on the iTunes Hip-Hop chart and #11 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Hobo Johnson has also caught the attention of big media players like MTV who tweeted “Very much in love with @_hobojohnson” and a feature from Perez Hilton and The Needle Drop. Five different songs from The Rise of Hobo Johnson have charted on Spotify’s Global Viral 50, US Viral 50, Australia Viral 50, UK Viral 50, Canada Viral 50, Philippines Viral 50, Spain Viral 50, NZ Viral 50, Ireland Viral 50, Netherlands Viral 50. Join BGA staffer Heather Rayburn as she hosts a special book club in celebration of Pollinator Month. Participants should read Dr. Erica McAlister’s “The Secret Life of Flies” before the event. Refreshments will be served as we discuss the book, review its highlights, and look at some slides about these fascinating insects.
Why this book? Everyone knows about the sexy bee pollinators, but the plant world also benefits from the pollination of other insects, bats, birds, rodents and even lizards. McAlister, a British entomologist, “gets under the wings of these crucial creatures as she ventures into the land of the fly. From hungry herbivores and precocious pollinators to robber flies, danceflies and the much maligned mosquito, she describes the different types of fly, their unique and often unusual characteristics, and the unpredictable nature of their daily life.”
Heather is the creator of www.MonarchLover.org, a website dedicated to promoting the planting of native milkweed to help the endangered Monarch butterfly. She’s worked at the Botanical Gardens for 10 years.

Gracie and Rachel are a study in duality: light and dark, classical training with a pop sensibility, Californians in New York. On their debut full-length, Gracie and Rachel pit anxiety and tension against an almost serene self-assurance. The duo announced the album via NPR alongside the introspective video premiere for “Only A Child.” The self-titled record (out June 23, 2017) quickly won the hearts of NPR fans who voted them to #4 on NPR’s Your Favorite New Artist, with Bob Boilen describing as having “a terrific tension in the sound, an underpinning of mystery set against a baroque, but modern, pop foreground.” The duo has since recorded an NPR Tiny Desk Concert and was named to NPR 100 Best Songs of 2017, Bob Boilen’s Top 10 Albums of 2017 and Slingshot 2018, public radio’s artist incubator program for emerging artists.
Their music is a compelling juxtaposition of Gracie’s piano and lead vocals and Rachel’s violin and voice, augmented with stark percussion. The nine orchestral pop songs on Gracie and Rachel tell a story that’s rooted in the truth —their truth — but retain an enigmatic air that makes them relatable to anyone who has ever found their heart racing with doubt and pushed forward regardless or triumphed in subverting expectations imposed from without. Nutritious Thoughts is offering two new educational support groups. The Diabetes Education and Support Group is open to members of the community who have diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, or Gestational) and would benefit from extra education and support around this disease. The group will meet for an hour on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 6 to 7 pm at the Nutritious Thoughts office and will include a short education provided by Registered Dietitian, Margaret Ruch, MS, RD, LDN. The gatherings will also include plenty of time for peer support for members to help each other deal with the daily demands of life with diabetes.
“I’m excited to be able to offer this group as there’s a real need for education and support around this issue that is so common in our community,” stated Margaret Ruch, MS, RD, LDN.
The second group is open to all those dealing with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and looking for more comradery and assistance in navigating their relationship with food and PCOS. This group will be led by Registered Dietitian, Katie Rhodes, RD, LDN, and will be held the 4th Wednesday of every month from 6 to 7 pm at Nutritious Thoughts.
The Asheville Affiliates, was founded in 1999 as a social networking group for young professionals to benefit area nonprofits. The organization has grown into a community network of more than 3,000 members. The organization has raised more than $265,000 for 50 nonprofits.
